View Full Version : What if there were no SV650?

Here's a question for those of us SV owners on this board (i.e.- the majority of us): If Suzuki never made the SV650, what would you have bought instead? The SV is a pretty good all purpose bike and at the time it debuted in 1999 if filled a bit of a void. It's too sporty to be considered a "standard" motorcycle like a Honda Nighthawk, nor is it a real, full-on sport bike. It's kind of an inbetweener.

If there was no SV650, I probably would have bought a used 600 i4 in the summer of 2000. If I did, who knows what would have become of me. I might be a "mad stunta" if I started out on a different street bike. :p

not sure, i bought it w/ intentions of making it a race bike. i might have gone the fizzer 400 route to race the 450 class.

I would have bought a KLR and become a completely different (and arguably lesser... no offense to KLR owners) person.

I probably would've bought a gray import smaller displacement sportbike.

The SV was really the perfect bike for me for many reasons. And I don't think there are any other bike, still, in this category that offers so much.

Most likely would have picked up the ZZ600 Ninja (E)
I was looking at both, but I just kept coming back to the SVS.

Same here; I was looking at that Kawasaki, too. So, so glad I bought the SV. I am offended by the phrasing of the poll about "pretending" to be a race replica; for my purposes, it's quick enough to get me in serious trouble on Angeles Forest Highway and give a guy on a 998 fits while doing so ...

I don't know what I would have purchased.
Every time my wandering eye has me lusting after another bike I always arrive at the same inevitable conclusion:

"But the SV does 'x' better."

Bikes that are faster don't have the same fuel economy. Bikes that are bigger don't handle as well. Bikes that are prettier aren't hammer-reliable.

Call me greedy, but I want a bike that will do everything. Such a bike probably doesn't exist, but an SV with upgraded suspension is about as close as it gets.

I'dve bought a honda shadow if I were riding at all.

Until I hopped on Toad's SV, I was a cruiser guy.

No doubt about it, an FZR400 with a 600 engine, until I realized how uncomfortable it was.

Then a TL-S, Superhawk, or Falco.

Gotta have a twin.

Well, maybe a V-max or Interceptor...

Of course, if I had ever ridden a 929, I would have gotten a Fireblade, one of the only inline-4s I like.
