Hello everybody, first post for me....
I've been lurking here for a little bit & learning all about my new to me '03 SV650S, great info btw.
I was wondering if anybody has any experience with crash bars vs sliders. My bike came with sliders but I'm considering swapping them for crash bars. I've got a set on my EX500 although I havent "tested" them yet. Renntec (the brand of crash bars on the EX) sent me a pic but I cant really tell how much better, if at all they would protect the radiator compared to sliders.
Any experience or opinions welcome, thanks.

That looks like it might do a fantastic job of protecting.

racing 905 makes em for the 03 sv.....u gotta call em' though.........
if you do get those crash bars i wouldnt go anywhere near full lean angle with them on;)

i think crash bars r more for stunting...if u ride canyons or whateer they may be more of a hassle then helpful....true they do offer more protection in a spill, but how would they fare against a full lean? i always see them on stunter's bikes and never on anyone taht does track, canyon...so u get the picture what they're designed for..

I've seen the crash bars on Gixxers and other stunters bikes, they mount outside the fairings and I can see those types limiting lean angle. Also, they're angular & crude in construction. These bars dont stick out enough to affect lean angles since they are so close to the motor. Crash bars are popular for EX500's at the track, many racers use them without sacrificing any lean angle.

Yeah, those don't look like they stick out very far, but they still could hamper extreme lean angles at the track. They also look like they might interfere with some body positioning when hanging off, but they will protect your shit in a drop.
Are those crash bars metal or is it made from the stuff they make frame sliders out of? If they're metal I don't think I'd want them on my bike during a high speed low side. They wouldn't slide very well and could damage the mounts.

LapiņaLoca has crash bars & sliders. And that kid is the fastest mofo ive ever seen at GMR.
He has an pre-03, i dunno if it makes a difference.

I've tested both the crash bars (called engine guards by the manufacturer) and frame sliders on my 02, both got scraped up but the only really damage was from my handlebar impacting the tank.
I would say the frame sliders would do a better job of protecting your tank and possibly the radiator as they stick out farther and might contact the ground INSTEAD of your tank or radiator. With just the crash bars i would think that the bike would slide on the crash bars and either the tank or radiator.
As far as body positioning, i generally rest my knee on the slider right before turning into a corner; no real problems with them except that if I brake hard and don't squeeze the tank sometimes my knee will hit the slider. No such problems with the engine guards, and they make nice footrests during long rides :)
