i could two methods to do the TRE mod for my 01' svs. the first one is at his site by this british dude:
http://www.sv650.tk/ (its in the mods section)
he pulls two wires from inside the rear seat plug

and the other method is here:
http://www.sv650.org/ig_retard/ignition_mod.htm
this way, he also disconnects two wires from a plug. but the plug is located under the tank.

what is the difference between the two? they both look like its the same wires at different locations. which one would be better to try?

Don't know, but I did the two wires under the tank. Easy to find and took 5 minutes total.

It really doesn't matter at all, the signal on the wires is just a connection to earth.
The really quick way is just to cut them. Don't even tape them up, 'cause it doesn't matter...

Is there a way without getting into the bike to determine if this has been or needs to be done to my bike?

Like if I put it in second and pull in the clutch will I be able to tell by revving the engine?

I did mine like this....

This was the first mod I did before I rode the bike even, so I don't know the performance gain. I don't know if you can tell by the seat of your pants. It's only for 2nd and 3rd gears...
