View Full Version : My Old J crash 11/14/04

Well, it happened.... popped the crash cherry on the 954RR. Headed through Old J into the first really tight corner, the big hairpin one. It was going good but my peg was dragging and starting to catch. So I thought I was close enough to the apex to start coming up a little off the lean, but no good. Went wide and tried to keep it on the edge of the dirt. Next thing I know, I'm sitting in the dirt and checking myself for injuries and looking sadly at my bike. First thought... "Shit, there goes the trackday."
Bike: Busted right mirror, bent rear brake lever, chewed up frame slider, rash on plastics, and exhaust. Perfectly ridable.
Me: Fractured Ulna bone right by the left wrist, pain in my left shoulder and some unusual feelings when I move it in certain ways (waiting for a CT scan appointment). The rest is your standard aches after a crash. ZERO road rash.
Gear: Helmet has some scratches from the dirt I went in to, but no impact damage. Leathers scuffed up on RIGHT side (damage to me is on left  ) And that is it. No damage to gloves or boots.
All in all, I feel pretty lucky that it wasn't worse. Gear certainly saved me from a much worse fate. I couldn't imsgine how bad it would have been if I hadn't been in the gear.
Whatever you do, don't ever have to learn how to survive with only one hand...IT SUCKS!!!! Took me five minutes to tie my boots, and about twenty to type this damn post... :D

Damn Phil, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( That turn is a real bear; I've been to Pucker Factor 10 on that a couple of times.
Next time someone has an off-bike excursion in our backyard, give us a call, would you? We could have at least given you a place to check everything over before riding back, or at most, gotten you and your bike home.

Hopefully anyone reading this thread that hasn't already bought good gear will go out and buy some. I would have had serious roadrash if I had been wearing jeans in my crash yesterday.
Get well quick Phil,

Bummer, you and the bike were looking 100% at the gas station. Sounds like you got pretty banged up but like you said, had it not been for the proper gear you'd REALLY be hurting. Glad your still with us and heal up soon.

Aw, Phil...too bad about the trackday but it could have been so much worse. I'm glad you came out of it as well as you did. You'll be healed up and out there again in no time...until then, beer and movies can be quite therapeutic ;)

Phil, I know what you're talking about, when I displaced my shoulder on my skydiving incident I had my right arm (my good arm) imobilized for 3 months... I've learned to write (and do many other things :) ) with my left... Although I hope you're back in shape in much less time

I had to ask Patrick like 3 times when he said that you went down on Old J because I thought he was just messing with me. I kinda had a bad feeling when you guys took off down Old J, but I didn't think it would be you that would be the one who went down. Well I am glad that you weren't banged up any worse. Get better soon.

That has to be the worst picture Evah. :) Now where's the one of me like a billion miles behind you guys? Oh, I know.. you can do it like how they put Hawaii on all the maps and do a little cut-out and put it to the left in the picture. Anyway, Phil. Hope you heal up quick dude. Like I said, I know how it feels. I wish you the best.

I LOVE THE PICS JASON!!!!
As for me, thanks for all the concern. :o I'm still waiting on a CT scan for my shoulder and there are a few other aches and pains now that might need a little attention as well. But I'm still going to join everyone for the trackday, so I can see firsthand what I'm missing. :p
Hopefully all that is wrong with my shoulder is a sprain or pull or something and I can be back on the road by Xmas.

Jellybeans? I think not! Can't you see the extensive detail and careful attention to each moving part of the bike in Jasons drawings? Look closely and you will see that his masterworks are filled with wonderfully drawn figures and beautiful landscapes, while paying attention to each working part of the motorcycles........................... or not.

I'm still broken, and now it looks like things are even worse. Apparently the original doctors didn't see on my first set of xrays that I had also broken my scafoid bone in my wrist. And now, four weeks later, it still hasn't healed any and may have gotten worse because they didn't put me in a cast.
So now I am in a full arm cast, with the possibility of surgery in my future. I am so pissed off about this all, but there is nothing I can really do about it. It will be a really long time until I can ride again, that's for sure.
So I'm back to slow typing and having a rough time doing everything one handed. Makes me just so happy to have military doctors taking care of me....

Phil, that really sucks! Thought of you yesterday on the turn that bit you and was extra-careful.
Don't be a hero -- call if you need anything at all. Like if you need the CBR exercised. :p
Seriously, I have to drive by Scripps Ranch twice a day so it's not like it would even be the least bit inconvenient to stop to help with something.

I feel your pain there Phil- as I told you before I went through a similar situation with my wrist and had to do the surgery thing and full arm cast (up to the shoulder for a while). Lemme know if I can help you at all.

UPDATE 2
Went to the docs again, and it went a little smoother this time, at least by military doctors standards that is. Basically the ulna fracture is totally healed, and the scaphoid fracture is healing but not all the way. So now I'm at least in a smaller cast, only up to my elbow. But this one has my thumb immobilized so it's a pain in the ass.
But basically if things keep going the way they have been, I should be out of the cast and starting physical therapy by the first week of Feb. Wonder how long after that until I can ride....:D

Scaphoid fractures are the suck. That's one of the bones I broke when I crashed. I believe my ortho told me it was the slowest healing bone in the body. It doesn't get the same blood flow that the other bones in your hand do, hence the slowness.
Fortunately/unfortunately, since I had a cast on the other hand, the dr. only gave me a thumb spica splint... (you can see me sporting it in this pic (http://www.socalsvriders.org/modules.php?set_albumName=albuo46&id=chris_brett_rocko_jared&op=modload&name=Photo_Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php)) I was able to take it off, which was nice, but could have screwed up the healing process... And damn that thing got ripe.
Good luck with the last few weeks of healing, and your PT will probably go pretty quickly, I didn't even get any for that hand.
