Motorcycle Crash Kills Harbor Police Officer
A man who died of injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash in Borrego Springs Nov. 12 was identified as a 51-year-old San Diego Harbor police officer, a medical examiner investigator said.
Jeffrey Abbey, a 17-year Harbor police veteran, died Wednesday of blunt force injuries to his head suffered when his motorcycle collided with a van.
He was off-duty at the time of the crash.
Abbey was riding a 1999 Suzuki SV650 east on state Route 78 when the motorcycle veered across over double yellow lines and struck a cargo vehicle near Yaqui Pass Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Abbey, who was wearing a helmet, suffered extensive head, face, neck and chest trauma. Medics airlifted the San Diego resident to Palomar Hospital in Escondido, where he was admitted in critical condition.
