So this morning I go to ride to work as usual. Not a breath of wind at my house in SW Rancho Cucamonga. As I head East on the 10 fwy I soon realize it's getting more and more windy, and traffic starts to slow to a crawl (Apparently some truck tipped over from the wind up ahead. So I decide to get off the freeway and take side streets. Bad move because now heading south the winds are about 60 mph west right across me. I literally cannot stop because there is no way I'll be able to hold the bike up with that wind. So I decide getting back on the 15 South might be better because I'll at least be able to keep some speed. After riding on the fwy for a while in the wind and almost crapping myself many times, all of a sudden, my tank bag rips off my tank and flies behind me in the middle of the freeway taking with it my eyeglasses, my wallet, my phone, my sweater, my hat, my disc lock. I get off the freeway and after the wind dies down, I ride back over the spot 4 times looking for my bag. No dice. Cal-trans says if any worker finds it they'll let me know. So if any one finds a Joe Rocket Blaster tank bag on the freeway, lemme know! LOL

wow...that sucks!!!

i've been in constant wind going to yuma where i basically rode with the bike leaned just to go straight, and i've also been in scary gusts that felt like they were going to push the bike right out from under me (on the way to rosamond the night before trackday!) but never in wind strong enough to gank my tankbag!

gotta watch those forecasts, mang!

What's so funny about that story? That sucks balls!

How big was your tank bag that it was ripped off by the wind?

The tank bag is only about 4-5 inches tall, not all that big. I have never had a problem with it before, I have even ridden over 100 mph with it on, no problem. I was just riding along, trying to keep it upright) and I felt a tug on my right arm and torso and my first though was that it was just a gust of wind, never even imagined my tank bag was gone. Then about 10 sec later i realized the bike sounded different, louder....I looked down and, well the bag had ripped loose and slipped under my arm on the right. BAH! And I had just gotten a new phone 3 weeks ago....

i guess they should use some stronger magnets or something!

i won't be buying a JR tank bag anytime soon:p

that sounds scary though, i rode in wind on PCH one time, and it was so strong i was leaning the bike over pretty far just to stay straight....

At first I wanted to be upset with JR and the magnets, but honestly, those magnets are waaay strong. I think the main reason was the buffeting wind and the fact that I have the naked bike, no fairing so the wind had a better chance of getting under the flaps and bag. Plus if you consider I was travelling at about 65-70 mph, and then the cross winds were gusting up to 80 mph (I'm not joking, has anyone even beein in the wind on the 15 between the 10 and 60 during the santa ana's?) That's a whole lot of wind. Lesson learned? I'm not even chancing riding if there is a wind advisory.

I must agree that this story wasn't very funny. If you ever hear anything about that bag again, it will be a cold day in hell. Sorry man.

I'm afraid you are right, plus it wouldnt matter now, already bought new glasses, phone, etc..... Back to using a backpack for me I suppose.....

The worst part of all??? My beloved fitted NY Jets hat was in that bag. Sure I have other Jets hats, but that one was special to me.... sigh. At least the Jets are still 8-3, lol.
