okay, i have recieved 2 tickets in the last year, and i'm considering buying a detector.

who uses a detector? and what kind is it?

are they illegal? how much is the fine?

and most importantly, do they work?

i want one that doesn't depend on radar. i think some detect police band radio stuff....

anyone got some info?

i have a v1, and it works great.

there is a thing called the beartracker that scans police bands if you wana listen in.

i like the v1, and has hore than paied for itself.

its illegal in va, and dc, and maybe a few other places, but not in cali

I have a V1 also; hardwired to the bike. It's more than paid for itself. Like casey said it's illegal in W. virgina; illegal in DC, illegal in all of canada except BC, and it's illegal for anyone engaged in commerical activity to use (truckers etc).

The only ticket I've gotten after getting it *knock on wood* was from being paced by (the cop said that it couldn't keep up) an airplane while I was helping a friend ferry a car from seattle to portland (and being on a deadline to do it as fast as possible). 170+ in a 60... Thankfully my attorney got me out of that one on a paperwork technicality.

I think the biggest part to not getting a ticket is not speeding all the time (only when you really mean to) and understanding what the detector shows you.

I got 2 police detectors. They call them mirrors. Don't speed unless you believe it is clear and be prepared for the worst if it isn't.

thanks for the tip, smartguys....

all i can say is, some times a mothafucka needs to speed, and i don't want another ticket. those bastards hide all over the place, with airplanes too. i just want to level the playing field...

anyone else use one of these things?

get the v1, makes it a level playing field, and if you are on the lookout using the detector, you could go as fast as you want safely (from the police, not safely as in 150 on the freeway is safe).

okay, so the v1 is a radar detector, only.

so i a cop doesn't use radar, it does nothing?

maybe that's okay, i don't know....

is a cop's radar usually active while driving?
obviously the v1 will help with cops parked on the side of the road, but both my tickets have been from matched speed. i don't know if it would have helped me.

so my question is:
when a cop is driving down the road, is his radar active? or does he have to activate it?

When they catch you while they're driving along.. that's called pacing. They just use their speedo readout and don't need to clock you with radar.

CHP patrol cars use a mobile system and can clock you while they are moving. Local PD??? I imagine varies by location. If they are using laser... your screwed. By the time the detector registers you have been clocked. Nothing is going to help you if they are clocking you from the air since they usually just us a stopwatch to time you between marks on the road.

Bottom line is that a detector 100 times better than a v1 will not guarantee no more tickets. Also, while detectors are legal any device that disrupts the operation of radar/laser/lidar is definitely NOT LEGAL.

You can get a laser scrambler from a company in the UK. I will try and find the link. I think they are illegal but normally when using laser they target the front license plate of a car. Since a bike is a harder target to find a flat surface, it probably wouldn't arouse suspicion. <----- I can't spell.
