Proper knee armor placement

ok, how exactly is knee armor supposed to be positioned when you're on the bike? is it supposed to extend up over the top of the knee? or just over the knee cap?

Mine starts about midway up the knee, and extends up over the top. I have found the knee sliders to act as another form of protection to.

but there obviously needs to be a minimum it needs to cover.

When my knee is bent it covers my entire knee and is slightly biased below my knee
