I mounted a ABM handlebar conversion kit on SV650S (2003) and love it!!! The mounting instructions said that the stock clutch and throttle cables can be used, although they have to be rerouted. Have been driving around a couple of weeks now, but the clutch cable gives some problems.

When I turn the front end fully to the left, the clutch cable hits the fairing and the clutch play complete disapears!!! Besides that, the steel bend of the cable hits my triple tree. Also see the photo. The mounting instructions also said that for a better position of the clutch cable, you could use one from a Naked SV. Yesterday I lost confidence in the mounting instructions, because it also says that throttle cables of a Naked can be used which is absolutely not true!!! The Naked uses a different throttle unit, but thats another story.

The thing I am not sure about is if the Naked clutch cable is long enough!! I have been searching Google for large images of the left side of a Naked SV and all I can find is large images of the right side. Like this one (http://www.sportrider.com/bikes/2004/2004-suz-SV650-A-1.jpg). What I do know is that my handlebar is wider then the Naked one. I can’t order the cable and try, because it can’t be returned if it doesn’t fit. :( Another option would be the clutch cable of a V-Strom 650, but perhaps that one is TO long.

So is there a Naked ’03-’04 rider out there who can help me out by giving some dimensions of the clutch cable of his/her bike? Or a large picture of the left side would also be helpful. Or both... :D

And another thing. Mounting and adjusting a clutch cable, is that something that anyone can do? I’m not really good at that stuff :o , but I don’t feel like paying a lot of cash for having it done.

Hey,

I did a similar mod (remember?) Anyways I looked at the SVN cable in my local dealer, and they said it should fit fine. It looks longer and the metal curved piece is about 1.25 inches in length, not 3.5 inches that come on the SVS.

I just haven't gotten around to changing mine yet (x-mas and all), but I will be swapping it in early Jan.

Mounting easy: just remove from lever, lift tank, unscrew old one from block & remove. Then re-route and install the new one.

Adjusting is something you should get familiar with. It's easy, you simply play with the adjuster on the handle mount. It's one of those simple things that will make the bike a little more comfortable.

Thanks for the reply Mastrind!!! I ran into a Suzuki dealer yesterday who had a Naked '04, so I instantly checked the clutch cable and got some dimensions. Compared it with the S clutch cable and I think it should work fine as you said. It's longer and the metal curved piece is much better suited for my kit. :D

For those who are interested, I wrote a "How-to" on mounting a handlebar conversion kit. I put it on the SV1000 portal, but it's no trouble at the Socal forum as well.

Anyone know if I can run a clutch cable without the metal elbow? I did a gixer 1000 front mod and the elbow is too long now...Bike is a 1st gen SVS. Thanks!

I just bend the fsker till it goes where I want it. :D

Also, I ran the cable around the right side of the bike...
