Loc-Tite/Permatex < http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_2_17.gif > Pro Seal "PRO LOK"

Maybe this tip has been covered here before, but here's one to save you a few bucks. It would appear Loc-Tite and/or Permatex have an exclusive with the auto stores. I was picking up some additional Blue (Medium) Strength supply since I was running low. Now I know the stuff can be important to securing bolts that are better off having use of it than not, BUT $6.49 for a 6ml supply is total B/S! That's almost as bad as ColorRite with the cost of their paint supplies. Seriously, were not buying liquid gold here...

Anyway, my next stop was to the hardware store to pick up some other project supplies and I noticed they had a thread locker "PRO LOK" (in both Blue and Red strengths) by another manufacturer (Pro Seal) and packaged for home nuts & bolts projects use. I looked on the back and in the fine print it listed for auto use as well. Best of all it was only $2.49 for the same 6ml worth.

Now unless someone cares to tell me why (chemically) one brand is so different than the other to justify the price difference between them, then we're just a bunch of fools paying 50+% more for a popular brand just because it's in an auto store with different niche packaging...

FWIW...

FWIW...

$6.49 is actually about 160% more then $2.49!

Paul, when did you add the personal FWIW Calculator to the BBS?

The point being was, any product that's marked up 50+% just because it's packaged to a niche market/person makes it an inept buy...

Okay, I searched the boards for where you discuss use of nail polish for a cheap Loc-Tite replacement and that you had a past GF/roommate who you kept stealing hers from. Can you enlighten us further on how you came to know of this thread locker use for ladies nail polish (seriously, just would like to know) and why have we not heard of this self wrenchers $aver tip before? I haven't any polish around, nor have I looked at its going $ rate in stores to compare, say per ml with the cost of thread lockers so have you any first hand info on that aspect? Am I correct you've been using this with success for the two plus years since I think you first noted this use of it in a prior thread?

Does anyone else use it for this use around here?

As for the new smilies, what's wrong with them? I've not seen a heads-up to not use them and it's not like they're bandwidth hogs like some pics we see posted here. Nor are they a non-work safe type, so? Seriously, I'll take not using them into consideration if it's a good reason. Otherwise, I think they express more than words alone can say sometimes and the new ones are far better at it than the old tiny ones. IMHO...

For this thread I did find a better pic (above in the prior post) for my sarcasm and replaced two of the smilies that were in it with the one pic. Hope that helps for now...

Punkbrad tipped me off to nail polish as locktight.

permatex has just been around while. It by far works the best. I use paint for my grips...works very well..as for nail polish I heard about using that a while back..I would use it on bolts thatI would losen regularly so you can put soem fresh stuff on every once in a while...the onlythingthat really hurts the nail polish is heat..it can weaken the strength of it and vibration...the solution in loc-tite is less suseptable to heat and vibration... this is what a little birdie told me..if someone knows something else let me know so I can shoot the birdie and eat it for lunch for lying to me....

i think it's the fact that it's in an autoparts store they think they can jack up the price because it's a "specialty" it's like how paint stores will have higher prices on paint but go into a walmart or something and u might find the same paint cheaper

Hahaha!

Yeah, nail polish isn't as good as real lock tight, but it's more fun to sniff.

For grips I use hair spray.

Well since I don't take my bike swimming, I don't think that'll be a problem.
