You can see many details by checking out my cycletrader ad. The bike is in very good condition, some very minor scratches (hairline). It has between 10 and 11k miles, (i drive it all the time so I'll have to run and check the current mileage). It has a clean title (in my hand right now). If you have any more questions feel free to pm me or use my contact information on the ad.

Thanks,
-Rob

The Kelley Blue Book has two different categories of prices for motorcycles, "trade-in" and "retail". The trade-in price is the one that you could expect to receive from a dealer in a trade-in. That one is probably the one that is just over $3000 (also - it didn't look like the KBB had different entries for the "S" models when I checked, so the prices should definitely be bumped up more than what's listed).

As for what to expect when buying a vehicle instead of trading one in, you have to look at the retail price. This is what you should expect when buying from a private party or dealer (and you have to add a lot more for tax and licensing to the dealer price). For an '03 S model, what SV650sk3 is asking is perfectly appropriate. If you run a search for '03 S models on CycleTrader.com, you'll see a range of about $4500 to $5000, unless the bike is a salvage title. With the highmount, seat cowl, and sliders, the price that SV650sk3 is asking is actually a good deal.

Ah, my bad. That's what I get for not reading the thread close enough. I've edited my post above.

I too am curious about what sv650sk3 will be riding next. If I had to decide on a inline 4 600 right now, it would be a tough call.

sorry I was away for awhile, I just started a new quarter of school. Tiger: I did not receive your e-mails, you can just give me a pm if you still have trouble.

James: I am looking at either the cbr f4i or the kawasaki ZX-6R. I really want the kawi, but I am having trouble finding any for even close to blue book. I also am looking at the R6 that is going for $6200 on SoCalSporbikes but that will probably sell before I sell my bike.

Anyways, thanks for the interest.

Oh... yeah, James you have a ninja right? What's the insurance like on that?

Tue 1/4/05, 12:53PM
i'd go for the zx6 i see em go for bout 6 and a little change all the time over the f4i, if you had to go the honda route maybe consider the rr over the f4i insurance on a zx6 is a little cheaper than a sv (w/ my carrier, farmers, because they rate by cc size) good luck

SV650sk3
Tue 1/4/05, 6:04PM
wow! I should get a faster bike just to save on insurance! The RR is out of my price range unfortunately. Or at least I cant find any under $6000 (my price ceiling). I really like it though, one of my riding buddies has one. If I can find a zx-6r for 6k or less with less than 5k miles on it... naw that will never happen:sad:

Had a buyer come out yesterday with his dad. This was going to be his first bike. He has taken the msf, but I still won't let him ride it. Am I being reasonable?

when i bought my bike it was going to be my first street bike, and i had just finished the MSF. the guy i bought from let me ride it up and down his street. honestly, i probably woudn't have bought it if he didn't.

Hmmmm. Should I have them sign something then that says that if he crashes that I am not reponsible for his medical bills or my bike?

Oh, and to clarify, my street is a very steep and curvy hill. It might be difficult for some people to make a u turn anywhere on the street.

He brings cash. You hold it. He crashes it, he buys it.

Yes.

If they must ride before they buy get a $4500 check first.

why not meet em at a parking lot (empty of course)

SV650sk3
Tue 1/11/05, 10:27AM
yeah but at parking lots they have ever so deadly light poles in the middle. I dont have a rear seat so I can't take him for a ride. maybe I could demonstrate that the bike shifts, brakes and accelerates good while he watches from the sidewalk. I think the $4500 deposit is probably the best way. (thats how I bought my first bike)

my whole reason for riding the bike was to see if i'd actually be comfortable on it...not to assure that it was working.

i dunno, i don't think you can expect people to buy something used for that price w/o testing it out...i think that's one of the risks of offering your bike for sale to strangers (opposed to trading it in, selling to a friend, whatever).

however, i know if i did drop my bike before agreeing to buy it, i would have totally felt responsible to pay for any damages, or would have bought it if i liked it.

maybe you should at the very least discuss this with the guy so you're on the same page about whats expected if something does happen before letting him test ride it.

bringing it to an open parking lot is a great idea too...i know i would have had a bitch of a time on a twisty-hilly road on my first run...that's just asking for trouble...but realistically i don't think light poles should be a huge concern

you know, i think this is really a case by case kinda thing too...if you're getting the feeling from this guy that he will very likely drop your bike, then by all means don't let him ride it. but if he was responsible enuf to finish the MSF before even looking for a bike, i'm thinking you may wanna give him the benefit of the doubt...your call really

Tell him you'll take $4500 and give him a deal buy writing down a lower amount on the transfer of sale that the DMV taxes him on.

Not that I would encourage anyone to defraud the wonderful state of California out of taxing the sale of the same vehicle multiple times, but...

For the past 10 or so years I've never stated the sale price of a vehicle in a private party bill of sale....and I "accidentally" leave the sale amount blank on the piece of the title that you tear off and mail to the DMV after you sell the bike. That way I'm not perjuring myself and the buyer can do whatever his conscience dictates with regards to sales tax. Never gotten any backlash for it.

BTW, do be sure to make a copy of the signed title and send that tear-off part in. A guy evidently never registered a bike I sold him last year, now the state's threatening to withold the renewal fees on the bike from my next tax return...despite the fact that I have notified them in writing three times that I've sold and released interest in the bike.
