I have recently installed a micron full system and put in a K&N filter and was wondering if i could still be running rich with the stock map despite the fact that my intuition and research says i should be running lean? the temp is 5 degrees celsius and my elevation is 3000 feet above sea level so might that have an effect? any input would be appreciated

Would of thought you'd be lean. Think you need to remap the ICU or PCIII it.

well, at 3000 ft, you could have less air, but considering the exhaust and filter, seems like you'd be lean. Another alternative to the PCIII and ICU reprogram would be a Techlusion box ($150).

The cheap way to tell if you're lean or rich: run it for a few days, look at the inside of the exhaust pipe. If it's white, it's lean. If it's black and full of "soot," it's rich. So, as long as it's black, but not full of stuff, you should be fine.

Or you could check your plugs which is a hell of a lot more accurate. ;)

Funny thing, that.... I know when you install the full system for the SV Thou (the yosh 3/4), the PC3 map for the system is actually a bit leaner in most places. Now, that's a 2 into 1 system of different design; someone gave me a vague explanation of the system using exhaust pulses and back pressure for cylinder filling/scavenging and other such things. Ya' think the 650 systems are anything like that?

Smog testing is done at partial throttle so the factory sets up the bike to run lean at 1/4 throttle in order to pass the smog test. At larger throttle openings there is more of a danger of going lean and burning a piston so they set it up a little bit fat (rich) just to be safe. So when you re-map or install a PC you usually end up adding gas down low and taking some out up top. That's where a dyno comes in handy.
