View Full Version : Arai, Shoei or other helmets?
Anyone here use this helmet? I tried one on down at SD H.O.M.
and thought it was rather nice. Just curious as to the long term comfirt. I have to buy a new helmet because I dropped mine like an idiot, nice crack in the back of the helmet now. Good thing it was only a Bell. Did not pay very much for it.
Anywho, H.O.M. want $440 for the Shoei, I found that I can get it from parts 411 WITH EXTRA TINTED SHIELD for around $350.....
$300 with out the shield. I am probably going to order it soon(Monday) so any input prior to that would be great
Thanks!

I like mine.
Had it since Feb. Lighter than the TZ-1 I was using and has better venting.
Since I've only used Shoei I couldn't tell you how it stakes up to other makes. But I like it.
Been thinking about buying a Nolan, the kind where the whole front pivots up.

I have a Shoei Z-II...I like it a lot, very comfortable...only drawback is it's noisy...but earplugs solved that!
Helmetshop.com has the following pricing:
RF900 Solids $254.99
RF900 Graphics $329.99
RF900 Replicas #349.99
If you know what size you are, then you could just order online. I got mine from the Helmetshop.com and was very happy with their service...if you need it soon, you might be able to get it fedex'd. Also, there's no sales tax either...
Last alternative...if you just want a quality helmet quick and cheap, and if you know your size...I have a blue Shoei TZ-1 in Large that I'm going to put on ebay whenever I get around to it...I'll sell it to you for $100. I only used it for 2 months...got it at a half price sale from a local dealer...it's a little too big for me...

I had a Shoei and was loyal to only that brand until I tried an Arai. Now I have an Arai Quantum and think it is the best fitting, most comfortable helmet I have ever worn. Cost was around $380 from one of the online helmet shops, I think it was close to $550 at the HOM shop. Don't get me wrong I think Shoei is an excelent lid, I still have my last one, just prefer Arai now.

It depends on your head shape. I would try them both, before you go with one or the other.
I have an Arai Quantum........... fits me pretty well.
The noise factor......... I think........ is present with any helmet. The only thing that will solve that problem are ear-plugs, as Mike said.
:D
The Shoei fit perfectly..... I did not realize how uncomfortable my BELL really is. The Shoei fit much more snug, but was more comfy at the same time. The reason I am looking at the Shoei....... BIG CHIN. My chin sticks out a bit further than most and the Shoei is the only one I've tried on that will not push against my chin in a strong head-wind... Otherwise I would probably go for Arai. I was really quite impressed with the fit/feel of the Shoei though. The sales guy at HOM was actually helpful though. He did not just automatically try to push the most expensive helmet he had, I told him what I was looking for and he recommended the RF-900.
Said it would be the one to give me the most "chin space". And is prolly going to be the quietest. I think I'll be ordering from parts-411.com They have the best prices I've found so far.
Graphiced(nice graphics on these things) $297.00
Tinted high-def shield $52.00

Parts411 definitely has the lower price on the RF900...it's weird though because the Helmet Shop beats them on the Z-II by a few bucks. Another thing to consider Gregg, and this stopped me from ordering my helmet thru Parts411...their helmet return policy:
Due to manufacturers' return policy and personal hygeine issues, Apparels, Helmets, Goggles, Gloves, Boots, Electronics/Electricals, Fairings, D & D Exhausts CAN NOT BE RETURNED OR EXCHANGED. Please make sure you know exactly what you want before ordering.
I couldn't find a Z-II to try on anywhere, so I definitely wanted to order from someplace that would do an exchange in case it didn't fit right!

I have an RF-900 and I think it's a pretty decent helmet. Of course, this is my first helmet so I don't have much to compare it to. It's comfortable though, and not too loud, although it does get a bit noisy at freeway speeds. I haven't tried earplugs yet, aren't they illegal in California?

Burst,
Be SURE to try the Arai shapes which are designed for the long oval head, as well as the round oval head and their new helmet which is sort of a happy medium between both.
Long oval head shape helmets: Signet series, Renegade series
Round oval head shape: Quantum series, RX7-RR.
The new Astral series is for intermediate head shapes..more width than the long oval series but more room front to back than the round oval series.
So try ARAI for the best fit...I find Shoei's fit me terribly (I guess I am firmly esconced in the land of long oval). :)

I just found Arai's to be incredibly pricey... Hell, I'd love to buy a Shoei with the nice graphics, but I'm too cheap. :)
But Gregg, I agree that you need to try on any specific helmet at a store, and then get it offline for a good price... I like my shoei (RF-800 I think), although I find it's not the best vented thing on the market... Got it for like $240 though, which ain't bad...
Brad
I tried on the large Shoei RF-900 and it fit perfectly. Very snug but much more comfy than my Bell, and slightly more comfy than the Arai's I tried on...... It just seemed to fit my odd-shaped head perfectly.
I know what size and style helmet I need. Though I am sure there might be some variation from one helmet to the next, so it may end up being an issue. Also, no sales tax will sort of make up for the difference in price(well almost anyways)
Thanks for the tip Mike!

I am starting out a list of apparel to get before I buy the 2003SVS, here is my question. I need to know which is the best model according to Value from both of ARAI & SHOEI.
I know that SHOEI just released the new X-11 but I am not able to buy a helmet that would cost me $659 (I want one with cool graphics). So I am wondering which model was the best buy for your buck (with graphics) before the release of the X-11 model.
Also the same thing goes for ARAI helmets. Please post your thoughts and experiences, Thanks.
My limit is $500 on a helmet, which has to have some good graphics design.
(P.S. Does any 1 know the best place to buy the lower spoiler for the SVS?)

If you have an Arai head, I would try looking for an Arai rx7-rr4, I have seen places advertising them for as low as $439! They need to get rid of them to make room for the Corsairs. I love my Arai rx7-rr4:)

most people will state that you either have an arai head or a shoei head.
You may want to figure out which you have before figuring out which helmet you want.
NukleoN
Mon 3/31/03, 6:47AM
Note that Arai has different shell designs in their own line. If you're a round oval, you can wear either Shoei or Arai. If you're a long oval (like me) then you'll want to try on the Signet GT model and the more expensive long-oval shell design known as the RX-7RR (which has been renamed to something simpler, so watch for that).
Just to clarify, a long oval head (according to Arai) is longer front to back than side to side, whereas the round oval is more um..round.

Why don't you just go to your local bike shops and try them on?
Money's not an issue, and you sure do have an idea of which brands are reputable. You can buy the best rated/best valued helmet, but unless it feels right on your head - then it's pointless.

Go to the parts store in Escondido. They have an awesome selection. I also recommend the KBC VR-1, which I've owned for a year now with no problems......I got a graphics one for only $180 and it has a FULLY removeable liner. If you fit a large RF-900 or large Quantum, you will fit a Medium VR-1.
By the way I have seen RF-900's being sold for as low as $250 online. Try places like helmetharbor.com (http://www.helmetharbor.com) (the best), or accwhse.com (http://www.accwhse.com) because they often have closeouts on certain colors
Another thing to take into consideration when selecting a helmet is whether UV protection is added to their faceshields or not. I've read that the Shoei tinted shields offer it, but i'm not sure on the Arai.
I think this topic has been covered before in the Tinted Visors (http://www.socalsvriders.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=689) thread.

Face shields are easilly replacable... Its not something I would base a decision on. But it is something you should give some thought to before you go wearing it without sunglasses.
I fit Arai best so that's what I wear. But I have serious concerns with the faceplate mount on the newer models. Last time I went down, I barely tapped the helmet(Arai Astral) and a sideplate popped off, followed by the shield, leaving my face open to incoming sticks and shit(got a gash 1/4" from my eye). I've also heard alot of people break the tabs(2mm piece of crap plastic) when changing shields often. I don't change shields so I siliconed the shit out of the plate. Arai really needs to rethink the design - secure the shield with a thread rather than tab. HJC has some nice, light helmets and I like the speaker pockets, but the liners feel like shit.
As for the shield, I use window tint in lieu of tear-offs. $15 will make you a year supply. Shields are way overpriced, and scratch easily.

Yeah I don't know what Arai's thinking with those gay sideplates.....they look like earmuffs or something.

When I got my helmet I tarded out and broke my sideplates thinking they were supposed to come off....I was wrong, and now, I have to be careful not to dislodge the sideplates when I change shields. Of course, I'm a shield-changing Ninja now and can do it pretty quickly...there is definitely a trick to it. When yer feeling down, changing a faceplate on an Arai helmet makes ye feel nice and smart. Uh, like someone who knows stuff.
Next time I buy a helmet, I won't break the gol'durn sideplates.

I think these sorta represent long oval, oval, and round, respectively (sorry I couldn't find something better to illustrate, so don't laugh).
Anyways, long ovals tend to have a narrower front profile, and longer front-back side profile. Arai Signets fit them well.

I think Arai's are overpriced. I now have a KBC Vr-1 euro, very light, removable, washable liner (great feature) and nice padding, quiet. I use an amber tinted shield. I would compare them to Arai or Shoei, but typically 60% the price.
they even make them in chrome, for that full-on jedi stormtrooper look.
Anyone tried a shark, roof, or uvex helmet? i think they may only be available in europe, but they all seem pretty good. I'd really like to see a uvex, since they come with two visors, supposed to have good aerodynamic properties, etc.

I bought and imported a Roof Boxer helmet.
It was difficult to get on, and very cheaply finished (very little padding, reminds me of hardware store half-face helmets). Visor was rubbing the paint from new. I returned it to the sellers (designerhelmets.com). The flip-shield maybe a good idea, but the helmet is poorly made, all style, no substance.
They have yet to refund my purchase (2 1/2 months later) and they refuse to answer my emails...buyer beware.

Be careful, KBC does not put UV protection on their tinted visors. And this goes for everyone else too. If you are using a tinted visor and the manufacturer doesn't/won't provide UV data, you're risking your eyes because the tint will trick your pupils into opening up and letting more harmful UV in. I do know that Shoei visors are UV rated, but KBC isn't and I don't know about the others.

I use a tinted plastic film applied to the visor for daytime, it has UV protection. you can buy them for $16, or make them yourself with window shading from an auto supply store for $5 (make ~20 of them). It sticks to the visor with surface tension, so it just peels off for nighttime use and is reusable. It also proects the plastic visor.
The mirrored KBC visors do provide UV protection.

Really? The guy at Helmetharbor said he called KBC and they said they can't guarantee any exact amount of UV protection on any of their shields. The tinted ones might have a little more than the clear ones, but only by virtue of the tint, not because they actually added any UV protection

Mirrored surface coats simply cut out 50% of all light fequencies, including infared and UV.
I really like my amber tint shield from KBC -it gives a very high color contrast effect and appears to remove UV haze, works well at night to dim headlights without being too dark.

I bought the VR-1 and I absolutely loved it! Until I the other night.... It's odd. I got this weird buffetting noise, almost like a flat was hitting the side of my helmet. I couldn't figure it out since it's never happened before. Athough it was the first time I've ridden at night with this helmet and it didn't happen unless I was going 70 or over. Other than that tho, it's a great fit. Quite a bit of wind noise, but like everyone's saying, ear plugs help a lot! I have the euro (blue, red & white) scheme.

I wear an Arai Signet GTR, it's very comfortable and the fit & finish are superb. There is some wind noise and it does tend to fog on the cool/humid evenings here in SB, but it's what fit my head the best. Wear earplugs if the noise bothers you, there isn't any helmet that I know of that will be quiet enough to prevent any hearing damage over time. I'm going to look into some anti-fog treatment for the inside of my shield to see if that helps keep the misting down.

I went into CycleGear today and the Racer-1 Mirrored shields state that they block UV rays. I have yet to see a Shoei or Arai shield stating anything about UV rays.
I called KBC myself a couple of months back when I was looking into purchasing the VR-1 and they said that their shields were UV protected, but it isn't stated anywhere on their website..or in their literature. Shoei doesn't state it anywhere in their literature or website either. I don't think Arai does either, but I haven't been to their site recently because I doubt I will ever fork out $600 for a helmet, as much as I would like to.
I was somewhat undecided as to what helmet to purchase, as I was going between just buying another VR-1, or upgrading to a Racer-1 or a Shoei RF-1K. Seeing that the Racer-1 shield states UV protection, I've made up my mind.

Knightshade, did your helmet loosen up much after you bought it? I'm right on the cusp between a medium and large; if it will loosen up some I'll probably go with the medium because it will fit better and be quieter in the long run.
Hey TIE, I bought a Lg Arai Quantum, and then I tried my wife's Md Shoei RF-900, an it fit better. Then I got my Md Arai, and after about a week, it was the best fit I've ever had.
Shoei is the only bucket that ive found to fit my egg head.

You are in need of an oval shape helmet, the forehead pressure you noticed in the Racer tell me that. I would suggest trying on the following helmets;
KBC VR-1 (you know that one works)
Shoei Z-II
Shoei X-11
Suomy Spec 1R
Arai Signet GTR

Yeah if you fit a VR1 you will fit a Z-II or an X-11.......or an Icon Alliance for that matter. Too bad the X-11 costs over $400 and has a rough cordorouy-type lining, because otherwise it would be perfect

I have a Z-II and it is a great helmet.
My head has never gotten hot in it yet, however, it is very noisy.
My next helmet will be a ROOF Daytona, but that won't be for several years. They are said to be extremely quiet. They are hard to find in NA though. By the time I buy one, they will be available everywhere.

I bought a roof Boxter from www.roofhelmets.com. I returned it. it was not finished very well and poorly padded, kind of like the cheap snowmobile helmets you get at hardware stores. Too bad, because the design is awesome.

A customer can return items that are unused, and still in their original packaging. NO EXCEPTIONS. Used and damaged items will not be accepted. Exchanges must be filed within 10 days of receipt. No exceptions.
A restocking fee of $5.00 or 10%, whichever is greater is charged on all returns. This is only because our vendors charge us a restocking fee for exchanges or returns as well.

Had any probs with the side pod covers??? I have a QuantumF and it was ok until I removed the visor and pod covers to clear grit that had accumulated in the mechanism when I put on too much silicone lube. I had been changing the visor over without problems but now the right side pod cover pops off almost every time I swap the visor over, it takes real patience to eventually get it all (side pod) to stay in place when I slot the visor in, once it's on its good and doesn't show any hint of coming back off accidentally etc.
Anybody else had this issue?? The helmets good and all that but the annoyance factor pisses me off.

I haven't had to mess with it yet, when I got a new visor the guy in the shop put it on. It didn't look too difficult, a little fiddly perhaps.... I don't suppose I'll be doing it that often so as long as I'm careful and patient it shouldn't be a problem.

I just bought one. And...I LOVE IT!!! It's very comfy and quiet. It also has a visor protects against UV rays nearly 100%. Also, the cheek pads are replaceable and the chin guard removable (you can wash these things). It's also very light. I got mine at Cycle Gear (had them order it...I tried it on at Cal Coast b/c they stock it, though I would never buy anything there). Mine was a solid liquid metallic silver for $319.99 and the designed ones are about $400 I think. Pretty good deal if you ask me! They also had a really good review of it in 2 Wheels Magazine, if anyone's curious.

Turns out that the side pod on my Quantum F may be faulty, it freaked out on me yesterday and it all kept popping off on me when I lifted the visor to put it on to come to work. Cycle Gear were pretty cool and have just ordered me up a new helmet complete.
It fits way better than my old helmet especially with the slightly smaller 25mm cheek pads but it's twice as noisy.

Currently I have two lids. Both by KBC, I have a VR1 & the Wolf.
I use the yellow tinted shield for both, helps if you ride in low-no light or if the sun is full on in your face.
My head is more of a Arai shaped, and the KBC fits perfectly. I also took a face plant in my Chromed VR1, full impact on the chin portion of the full face, no problems, so I'm somewhat sold on KBC's

Just got my X-11 in the mail a couple days ago. It is for lack of a better word...SWEET. Ridden in it up to 65mph and it is a little on the noisy side but definately tolerable for cruising. Close up all the vents and it's wisper quite. It also is the best fitting helmet I've ever had on my football head and this thing flows some air too...head stays nice and cool. I would recomend this helmet to anyone. Got mine on Ebay for $350 without shipping. Can't wait to order the mirrored shield.

I got a Shoei RF-1000 for $257 or so from Ron Ayers last week ... good price, but I'm sorry, the helmet sucks!!!!!!
Extremely noisy, to the point that I can't hear my engine (and I've got an M4 high mount!!) and I get a headache from the obnoxious, unrelenting racket in the freakin' thing. Even at 40 mph it sucketh.
Thinking it might just be my odd head shape (not really) or the wind coming off my Givi 750 screen, I had somebody else wear it on a different bike and they agreed. I wore their VR-1 and it was SO much nicer.
The VR-1 is even lighter and doesn't throw your head around when you turn to the side. Ok, maybe it doesn't have a bling-bling decal on the front, but I can do without the pain and the noise. Especially since they're going for $120 (!!) at motorcyclecloseouts.com.
Will Ron Ayers work with me on this? We'll see....

I do have to agree that the Shoei RF-1000 is a loud helmet. I had an HJC Streetfighter CL-12 before I got it and it really was quieter. I upgraded to the Shoei for the superior protection that everyone talks about, because that's what's really important. I would rather wear ear plugs and have something that the majority of riders would agree will protect me in an accident rather than get something quieter that is way cheaper and less proven, such as the KBC VR1. I'm sure that people can come up with examples where the KBC has protected someone just fine, but that doesn't cut it for me. It's one of those things where I'm willing to spend the extra money.

One reason the RF-1000 and X-II might be louder than cheaper helmets in certain cases could be because they use more shell sizes. For example, in the RF-1000, the medium size uses a smaller shell than the large, while the cheaper TZ-1 (and perhaps others like the HLC's and KBC's) uses the same shell size for medium and large. The medium just has a thicker styrofoam lining inside, which also insulates better against noise.
But I'm, wondering if, in this case, the cheaper helmets would actually protect your head better in a crash.

I didn't actually try on either helmet. My location makes it difficult to find really anything. I was torn between what reviewers had to say as far as features and the likes. But then again...reviews are iffy too as not too many people are going to spend their hard earned money on something only to say it sucked...ya know?

I have been thinking of getting a new helmet to replace my HJC CL-12. Rider Magazine recent issue on the subject showed little difference in safety when comparing helmets that meet the same standards. Noise and comfort level can be different and do matter.
However, since helmet prices range from $80 to $700, is the extra cost really worth it once the helmet meet DOT and SNELL 2005 standard?
Why does it seem that most serious riders are wearing ARAI, SHOEI or SUMOY?
Anyone with any +ve or -ve experiences with the HJC CL-14?

The current issue (June 2005) of Motorcyclist magazine has a helmet review and they found that even the cheaper helmets provided excellent protection, sometimes more thant he more expensive helmets. It is worth reading.

Fri 5/13/05, 5:18PM
ya i've heard about that review..i think i have that issue, i have to read it sometime haha...but as long as it's DOT/snell approved and it fits well i think the rest is just on luxuries, shell shape, ventilation, paint jobs, etc. i say get the best helmet you can afford...even if it's not one of the more expensive helmets like shoei or arai
Thudds
Fri 5/13/05, 9:07PM
I've had Shoei's for years. I like them a lot but fit is the most important issue. I tried Arai but did not like the face shield replacement procedure. I currently have the x-11 and like it. A little lighter than my rf-1000, plus fits my fat head pretty good.
I have the HJC CL-14 and I have been happy with it, but ..........for cool weather or nights the breath guard is a must for no fog. This site metricbikes.com has great deals on helmets, its where I got my last HJC $135 free 2nd shield(usually $20-25) and free shipping. http://host235.ipowerweb.com/~metricbi/cgi-bin/ecommerce/ac/agora.cgi
It's really up to the wearer, try a bunch on at your local lid shop...
Fit and finish is probably the most important.. All major brands seem to protect well, but the small details is where they differ, fog proofing, liner clean-ability, how the shield and vents operate, and adjustable / removable padding. The more you put on the more likely you are to find "your " perfect helmet.
Good luck with the search

Sat 5/14/05, 7:16AM
another thing to worry about is weight..it can have effect on your neck and upper back...if they meet snell and DOT the protection is there..price does not always make a better helmet... as mentioned before little amenities and are whats different. make sure it fits your head and cheek properly. try on many and make sure you are comfortable not only with the fit, but with how well you can see out of it and how hard or soft the padding is.how easy to open the visor with gloves on, etc....
I have a arai head...they fit me the best..I don't have an arai budget, so I foudn the next best thing...the KBC line...same shapes and the helmet fit pretty good...good vision out of the tk8 (some new number now) ok vison out of the vr1 I have ... downside is a little heavy but not much...both fairly quiet...hope this helps.....

My last helmet was a Suomy Spec 1-r, blue xaus model.
After I got in my wreck I got a Shoei RF-1000.
I have to say in comparison. The Shoei Sucks. Yep, Sucks. It fogs up EVERY time i ride it, what Shoei uses for a breath guard is a cheap piece of vinyl, that touches your nose and still doesn't work that well. You also can't see out half as well in the rf-1000.
I will say that it is a bit cooler on the top of your head, seeing how the Suomy didn't have vennts on top, just a diffuser. But the suomy was cool, it vented air from the mouth area up next to the face shield to the top of your head to comp.
The shoei is more comfortable than alot of others, it just isn't as nice, or as light as my old Suomy.
I'm looking for a helmet that isn't noisey. I would still like good venting, but when the vents are closed, it would be nice to have a quiet helmet.
Anybody have any recommendations, I really don't want to drop a paycheck for a Schuberth.

I have a cheap helmet (CL-14) in size XL and I look like a friggin' Lego man. It's enormous.
Hey acer isn't this:
"The Way You Look At Things, Changes The Way Things Look !"
the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle?

i LOVE my suomy 1R...i will probably only purchase these from now on. i've never tried on a Shoei, but i think Aria's don't fit right on me. it's all about the fit!

I thought it was that u can't determine velocity and location of an electron at the same time? Or something like that?

do a search on "DOT better than Snell" on this site- the thread will explain a little about the article in Motorcyclist Magazine last year ( June 2005 issue).
The US President of Suomy took on a poster (possibly a Snell Employee) on the bay area riders forum concerning the findings - The Suomy brand deserves some serious consideration - from the posts the brand understand head trauma - and how to dissipate the energy to save your brain - but you will ruin the helmet in the crash.
I believe a ZR1 helmet came out on top in the Motorcyclist's article.
If $ is an issue look at Scorpion - many options/ you can order spare interiors - smart marketing and design
Good Luck

A cop pulls Heisenberg over for speeding. Asks him, "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Heisenberg says, "No, but I knew where I was!"
Anyhow, the small-scale version implies the large-scale version. There is no observation without altering the state of particles. When you see something, you are actually stopping photons with your eye to find out what wavelength they are. Wavelength corresponds to energy. Because you have stopped the photon in its path, no one else is going to see exactly what you do.

Do Suomy facefields provide UV protection?
This is the helmet I'm set on:

I really wanted a solid color, but I like the features of the extreme.
I tried on the Shoei, although very nice, it didn't feel as good as the Suomy did. I walked around cycle gear in both helmets for some time.

Suomy... :D
If you want all out, go Extreme, or settle for the Spec-1R. I have the extreme, it is my 3rd helmet, most comfortable and coolest looking helmet I've seen/used.

It IS about the fit... and ventilation... and noise (even with earplugs) ... and style.
Had been a Shoei wearer. Tried an Arai Signet GTR and immediately switched. Much more comfortable liner. Recently purchased an RF1000 on eBay - no scratches, still had new helmet smell. But didn't fit right. Hmm. Maybe my head shape is weird, yes? No. Actually, the previous owner installed the cheek pads on the wrong sides (DOH!). Sweet fit now , but the liner foam in the Arai really is much more comfortable for me. New helmet, $190 - delivered. Nice.

They had all the scorpions on display at Laguna last year...I thought they were really heavy.
