View Full Version : Ouch!
Well, one of the guys Rod and I were riding with today had an unfortunate incedent. He was passing a car on a short straight, and was still passing this car when he entered a tight left hander. He ended up in a lowside that pretty much destroyed his bike and his shoulder along with it. He was a little impatient and tried passing on a straight that just was not long enough, he entered a 30-35mph turn doing(according to him) around 60mph.
I headed all the way home and got my truck so we could go get him and his bike. Looking at it more, it definitely looks like a total loss. Forks are completely mangled, swingarm is twisted, and all of the bodywork is sitting a few inches lower and back than it should be.
When the bike slid off the road it ended up in a small ditch, mashed up against the side of the hill. He is ok...(well he's walking)
looks like his shoulder is broken or at least dislocated. He is at the hospital now. Should be back before too long.
Could have been worse, but it surely could have been better.
I was actually enjoying the ride.(first time back to Palomar since MY crash up there) Kinda bummed me out that this happened.
I guess we live and we learn.

Gregg,
From your experience of that corner, is 60 mph too fast? My view has always been that the recommended speed should be about double to have any fun ;)
Anyway, glad to know he survived, and that he'll be okay to ride again... Another thing that confirms my suspicion that SoCal is the highest population of :squid: ly folks around though... People here don't pass responsibly... Case in point... Two people that I remember on the GMR ride... One on the R7, and the real putz on the Daytona...

I think what Gregg meant was 30 -35mph on a bike. 40 tops..... unless you're Nicky Hayden.
The suggested was either 15 or 20 mph (correct me if I'm mistaken here Gregg). We are talking the tight side of Palomar here.
And just so there is no misunderstanding......... it wasn't me (Rod) that ate it. It was one of the guys we were riding with. I'm the coward of the group.

Poor Rod,
I crashed on the tight side of palomar at the beginning of the year. I totaled my katana 600, which was a good thing because then i could use the insurance money on a down payment for a sv. That was my first time up at palomar and my first crash on a street bike. Those tight side turns are pretty tricky. I was going down hill, passing two cars over a double yellow, going 45 mph, into a 15 mph decrease radius turn, basiclly i did everything wrong. I'm alot more carefully passing over the double yellow now. What doesnt kill us makes us stronger.
Just because someone is a little wild and crashes doesnt make them a squid.
I think i could of made the turn if i was nicky haden though. I cant wait to get back to palomar and rip it up on the sv. That katana is a poor handleing bike. i have just gotten rid of all the bad riding habits that i have picked up from that bike.
Tomorrow is sunday thats oretga day.:D
I hope rod has a speedy recovery. Maybe he will use his insurance money on a sv.

It wasn't Rod.

Does claiming it (own fault) on insurance raise everyone elses rates?

The insurance companies detemine rates by statistics.
You make a claim........... you just became a statistic.

Just kidding...even Burst's post makes it pretty obvious that it wasn't Rod, that is, if you actually read it! :)
Rod, you are correct. Suggested was 15mph, realistic speed on a bike about 35mph. He entered it at around 60. So, even if he was Hayden, I think it would have been a close one. He said that when he was in the process of returning to the proper side of the road, he was already entering the turn. There was no way he would have had time to set up for the turn no matter what his skill level.
So, just to clarify one more time. Tom was the one who crashed. Everyone else is ok......

Yeah.............. Rod is ok.......................
Well......... bodily anyway.............. mentally...... that's debate-able.
