View Full Version : The Races
Anyone interested in heading north for the races? I am thinking ride up on Friday night and return Monday. Do one day of riding on Saturday and spend Sunday at the races...... I want to go but would much rather have someone to ride with.

I've been considering it Gregg... I know people to stay with and people to ride with up there though...
Brad
(who's now thinking he might need a new rear tire if he's going to have that kind of a ride)
DO IT. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO! hehehe
I'd really like to go, but I don't wanna make that kind of ride on my own. Just be much more fun with another person to cause some trouble with. :D
Let me know if you decide you want to go. I'll need to give my boss a few days notice of my plans......

Any chance of trailering the bikes and taking the truck up there? ;)
At my size, the bike isn't really very good for sport-touring...
Brad
I don't think we'd fit both in the bed of the truck. One will fit no problem but two could be an issue.... How much would it cost to rent a trailer for 4 days? I've already got a hitch so that's not a problem.

Check w/uhaul. It shouldn't be TOO expensive ... (i don't think) ... tho' it is a bit last minute ... I wonder how many other people are renting trailers as well ...
I'm going to be up here, going to the races on Sunday as well ... would love to have company ... cuz' I admit, I am dreading a bit, doing the whole day alone ... (but am a wee bit curious if i'd stay that way) ...

I have access to a trailer, only problem is that there's no lights... If we could find a way to secure the bikes in the bed of the truck, we'd be alright... Otherwise I'm at a loss, and I don't want a 6 hour freeway drone to get there. Of course, if we took freeway and side routes, it'd be a 500 mile ride, which would about destroy my body... What do you think?

Well, the ride for me is about 600 miles so ... I don't know what to say ... I wouldn't mind trailering my bike if I had the option (the light issue should be easy to fix, just go to pep boys and buy some of those magnetic types and wire em' in) ... but riding wasn't THAT bad ... just extremely tiring ...

Yes, I agree. It was TIRING! just got back from Northern California. Did run up and down Lucas Valley road a couple times on the way back, just for fun.. flew by the entrance to "The Ranch" Zooom...

Took me 8 1/2 hours.. that was riding 5 with probably a total of 2 hours of rest breaks.. I think my butt is broken..

We're riding up from San Diego on Thursday Morning (scenic route) and coming back Monday (bombing it back).
Perhaps we can hook up for the ride home??!!
gotta go
That'd be great. I think Leigh(ersigh) wants some company as well.
Leigh, are you heading back on Monday?
Brad, I would really rather ride. I know it seems like a long long ride, but I think it would be fun...
I dunno, maybe you could come down to my place tonight and we'll se if we can get both bikes secured PROPERLY in the bed of the truck...... Let me know.

Okay, here's what I could envision...
I-5 North to Buttonwillow. Hwy 58 across to Santa Margarita, then Hwy 1 through Big Sur to Carmel... I then know a back way off Hwy 1 into San Jose, where I know people to stay with... All in all, I'm thinking it'll be 2 hours+ to Buttonwillow from Glendora, then 1 1/2 hours across 58 (which at least will be fun), another 1 1/2 hours to the fun part of Hwy 1, 60 miles (1 1/2 hours) of fun riding in the hills by the coast on 1, then from Carmel another 1 1/2 hours to San Jose... That's 8 hours just of riding time to get there, about 3 1/2 of it boring...
It's tempting, I'm just worried that once I get there, I'm going to be too sore to ride Saturday, and the ride back Monday will suck (It's always nicer going somewhere than coming back...)
Re: the truck, how far are you from Newport Beach? I might be able to swing by....

I was planning to head back monday, assuming I had company ... it's possible, if I don't have company, that I may stay a few more days cuz' I have a friend who is heading down from here, w/his truck ... then I can be a lazy ass. hehe. I'm waiting to hear from him ... honestly, I don't think I can stand being here for that long tho' ...
I was hoping to make my trip back the more scenic one, since I did the 5 on the way up ... but if everyone else is gonna do the shortest route, then I'll tag along ...
Takes me about an hour to get home from Bike Night in HB if that tells you anything. I am not sure of the distance from Newport.
Call me and let me know what you think. I still would rather ride.
And if we are too sore on Sat we will have already had a FULL days worth of riding the day before..... :D

Right now, I don't think I'd be able to ride that... I'm a lot bigger than most people on this bike, and the freeway hurts after not a very long time...
I'm checking with some buddies to see if they just want to drive up there, I think it would almost be a hassle to try to find a way to bring the bike up with me. If you guys want, I can map some good routes for you on Saturday (or, of course, you can get in touch with the norcal group, and I'm sure they'd show you around)...
Brad
Wow. that'll be a long ride by myself. I think it'll be kewl though.
I'll prolly take the quickest way(5?) up and then take a scenic ride back. Should be interesting since all I have to carry stuff in is a backpack......
I put all my stuff in a backpack and then used come alongs to attach it to the bike ... hehe.
I think I'm actually going to ship some of my stuff back, just cuz' I don't want to deal w/the whole strapping it to the bike (wearing it for that long is not an option) ... and then having to carry it around @ the races ...
I currently have 2 pairs of pants and 2 shirts ... that are all I have for 10 days ... heh ... oh yeah and 1 pair of socks ... i've been doing laundry almost daily ...
I wish I could have made it up there for the races, but I've got too much shit going on in my life!! This weekend it happens to be a class for work and then a rock climbing/camping trip.
And out of curiousity, what are you wearing while you're washing you're clothes every day? :D I mean, by process of elimination, if you're washing all your clothes, there aren't any clothes left to wear!
Not in the budget. Priorities...... I need leathers and if I am going to get them before winter, I need to limit my extra spending....
Maybe next time.
Hey Gregg,
Maybe next year we can all plan for this and go together. It would cut costs and I think it'd be a lot of fun.
Definitely have to try and put something like that together......
But for now, Leigh did mention something about a race at Willow coming up, we should get some more info and plan a group excursion to that. More likely to get peeps to go since it is a lot closer.
Who'd be up for it?
