So I've got all my gear except for my boots, I have a pair of steel toed boots that I'll wear for awhile, but I'd like a pair of actual motorcycle boots.
But
the need to have protection
be comfortable to walk around campus in
look decent

Sheesh, Brandon, the man asked for motorcycle boots, like this:

lol....
seriously, get some sidis. they offer great protection, and they also have the most replaceable parts. I think some alpinestars boots may offer similar projection, but if you scrape up the upper front part of a supertec boot you're SOL because that plastic isn't replaceable but if you have sidis you just unscrew the rashed piece and replace it with a new one!
These just may last a lifetime: http://www.aerostich.com/product.php?productid=16559&cat=0&page=1

I just picked up some black Alpinestars GPS3's for $150 and am lovin them. They're comfortable, water-resistant and offer good protection. They also have a nice thin toe area for easier shifting action, a thicker steel toe can be a pita sometimes. Plus they're not super expensive. Just my $.02.

These are the sh*t.
They are very comfy.
They make you look like a cyborg.
Motogp riders wear them.
Literally every part is individually replaceable (yes, even the soles).
Crash tested, Irk approved.
Vertically the boots are very flexible, horizontally they are not. Which is good, broken ankles are bad.
The boots even fit people with fat calfs like myself with plenty of room to spare. The calf is adjustable so the boot is a very custom fit once it is adjusted.
The straps are easily tightened with gloves on. You flip up the circle thing and put the latch on, the twist it 'round til it's snug then pop the circle thingy back down.
The vents actually work. They are also watertight when closed.
Closure is zipper and velcro. I've never had the zipper come down on me.
My only gripe is that the ceramic toe sliders have a tendancy to crack and chip (only 1 pad, but I have heard reports from other riders of the same issue as well). I have yet to replace the toe sliders as none of the ceramic has fallen out and it is sill functional. That being said, the ceramic is a lot more 'slidey' then regular plastic. My toe has never hit the ground snagged, so they do their job very well.

The first pair of boots is awesome.

Okay seriously, the man needs boots for walking around campus that won't look too weird. I think the SIDIs might be overkill. I say just find anything without laces, decent ankle protection and some kind of shifter pad on the toe. Tons of casual type stuff out there. Check the selection of boots at motorcycle superstore here
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/Department.aspx?Department=115&Division=1
They have a huge selection. If you find something you like, see if you can find it elsewhere for cheaper as they are not necessarily the cheapest online store.

They fit and walk like cowboy boots... so if your used to wearing those no problem. I'm not, so I always carry comfy dress shoes along for work.
I wear Joe Rocket Atomic shoes during the summer, but switch out with those as well, I just like wearing a shoe with more support during work (though I think the Alpine* GPS boots have more arch support than the JR shoes).

i got a pair of icon motorhead boots (black) for the same purpose - protection and to walk around campus, and they work pretty good. They go up just past the ankle to protect it, are very well armored, and are fairly comfortable. They also have some nice little breather vents so they don't get too hot.
I guess it's personal opinion, but I think they look a lot better than the more classic motorcycle boots. I've gotten a few compliments about having nice boots, and people didn't even realize they were for riding.

SIDI.
Hand made in Italy. Enough said.
Yeah, the parts are replaceable, but good luck finding anything other than this year and last years parts....

New Enough still has the Sidi Vertebra Race boots on closeout for $239 (http://www.newenough.com/sidi_vertebra_race_boots_page.htm) and the Oxtar TCS Evo Ti on sale for $199 (http://www.newenough.com/oxtar_tcs_evo_ti_boots_page.htm).
+1 for http://www.newenough.com/sidi_vertebra_race_boots_page.htm or the corsa model

I've heard nothing but good things about the new sidi boots. I have a pair of sidi vert2s and have worn them all day on occasion, they're pretty comfortable.

I recommend the sidi vertigos, i have a pair and they're actually comfortable to walk around most of the day but if your going to disneyland or some place like that i'd recommend putting a pair of chucks in your storage space (or flip flops)
the only thing i recommend if you get those is to put WD-40 on the heels otherwise you'd be sneaking and clicking as you walk

Agree with Irk...i have the vertigo Non-corsa...and i'm starting to wish i had spent the extra money to get the corsa because i feel like having a strap across the top of the boot would provide a more snug fit. Otherwise, the regular vertigos have been great. Good luck with your boot search!

I'd like the Sidi boots, but they're a bit overkill and more money than I have to spend on boots.
thanks for all the help guys!

+1 for Sidi's. Replaced my scraped up Frank Thomas touring boots with some Sidi B One Race Boots (http://www.newenough.com/sidi_b_one_boots_page.htm). $200ish. I agree that the ridiculously cool adjustablility of the Corsa's is nice, but (for my usage and budget) it wasn't practical. (wait, did you say replaceable sole???!! that might be cost effective.... unless the soles are 200 bucks).
The soles of my FT boots wore down pretty fast (< 6 months). I think the same may happen for these Sidi's. The treads on the tire are shallow to begin with. I'm sure there is some good reason for this.
The other route to go is those workboot-style boots. They should definitely last longer, especially if you're running laps around campus throughout the day.

I use the Joe Rocket Velocity boot. I like it because I can wear them and they look decent and are comfortable for most activities (so I dont have to take a separate pair of shoes when I get there), and they still offer better protection over just normal shoes. True they aren't as nice for agressive riding as $300 SIDI's, but I guess the JR boots are enough 90% of the time for me.

I have used wolverine workboots for my commuting to work days...then taught all day on my feet, got some protection, and work day comfort...just a thought...as for serious riding..they won't really cut it , but better then tennis shoes..
I think Ryebred has these....

Seemed like a have pretty good protection and they're stealthy!

Yup, I hear ya. I wear them to work everyday, fairly comfortable, look traditional and they don't make me look like a cyborg walking around. One warning though, it took a LONG time to break in and for a month, it was tough getting a good feel for the shifter, but it is OK now.
On track days and weekends, I spurged and bought the Sidi's and I love 'em.

I wear a pair of steel toe Doc Martens as my commuter shoes. I wear them all day at school and also at work as a waiter when I commute on the bike. However I have been eyeing those new icon boots lately as the Docs can be a bit weighty.

damn.. that reminds me.. i'd better invest in some boots. Mine are just a knee high pair of lace up boots, they are cute and give me 3 " but probably offer no protection.
Another vote fore sidi vertebras. I have a pair that I wore daily for over 2 years. They are just now to the point of replacing. I got the black ones so they were a little less obvious. Be aware that in the right kind of crash steel toe boots can amputate toes. I also have a pair of the sidi rose and while abrasion protection is good im not overly impressed with the ankle support. But they do look like regular street boots.

+103648 for Sidi Vertigo
Worn daily, changed insole... very comfy...
All those "shorty" boots give me the shivers...no lateral ankle protection.

I watched a video on Big-Boys.com about a squid crashing on a wheelie and holding his half severed ankle up in the air.
Full height boots for me all the time. Helmet-hands-feet most likely to be injured because they are extremities.
Newenough, got some Oxtar Ti Evo's and they are comfortable, light and vent cool air.
These half height boots make me very nervous because of the lack of lateral and shearing support.

The only problem I have with full boots (and this is unique to my situation) is that with full boots I can't move my foot/ankle freely. Nerve disorder in my feet means I need as much flexibility there as possible. But if not for that, I'd be all about the full boots too.
