i know they are cheap little chinese piles of crap and they wont last that long. but then i though about how much less than $1000 will buy you in the used bike world. went stacked up again used bike in the same price range, these actually start to seem a pretty appealing.
i think it would be cool provided that you arent too hard core of a dirt rider and that you dont have pride issues about showing up to the trails when everyone else has nice $5k bikes.
im thinking about getting one to buzz around town with, what do you guys think? any experiences, good or bad?

only 1 is streetable, and it weighs 330 (doesnt say if its dry or wet) pounds with a 200cc engine. no thanks.
the last bike on the bottom has a honda OEM engine in it! that one i would buy!

yea, thats another down side i was thinking about.
another option i have is buying a wrecked '04 ninja 250. i know the guy who owns it, and i know all about the accident in question. in fact, i picked it up from the impound lot for him. so its not a huge risk like one of those wrecked bikes you see on craigs list. there is nothing wrong with this bike that isnt cosmetic.
but the thing with that i was kinda leaning towards a duel-sport. i dont want to ride like a moto-x racer, but i dont want to be confined to the pavement either.
you know, the 250 is a small bike, maybe ill just get a set of dirt tires for it :-?
:squid: lol

your best bet (used at least) is a plated xr650r. ya they are around 320 pounds, but the engine is bulletproof and doesnt need the same amount of attention as a 450 dirtbike (even the offroad versions). thats what im gettin next God willing. Mmight even sell the sv for one till we get a track around here!
prolly set you back 3-4k for a nicely set up one. but you can definitely get a cheap one. a while ago i sold my 86 600XL for 900 bucks and it ran damn good (huge mistake!).

yea, but there is a small problems with that. around here, dirt bike, quads and pick up trucks are like gold. anyone willing to part with that they got wants WAY yoo much for it. its not like more densely populated areas where you can just pick up an add tracker. shit is hard to find here.
i really think im going to buy that little ninja and franken-bike the fuck out of it :D
those things only weigh 300lbs dry. and with a little bit of suspension modification, a gearing change and a set of dirt tires, i think it could be fun. not to mention unique.
besides, my dual sport motivation stems from the urge to take short cut and stuff, not to get all crazy in the dirt.

hey bloodclot, I'm selling my NX650 (same engine as the XR650 that chrdog mentioned), if you're interested. Those Chinese bikes look like fun, though. I have, though, heard of people having problems getting the Cali DMV to title/plate them, just so you know.

Also, take a hundred dollars off the price because a big-ass rock just cracked up the front fender when i was offroading in places where I wasn't supposed to be.
And yes, to answer Napoleon's question, I have indeed taken it off some sweet jumps.

wow, even the site is a knock-off of yamaha's!
bloodclot: im not sure, but i think that the 250 has funky sized rims. you might have trouble even finding dirt tires.

I have a friend that bought one of these with the same train of thought that you have. She took it out on a couple trail rides. By trail I mean wide open dirt road with no jumps.
Within two trips it was rattling itself apart. Loosing bolts and the like.
YOu get what you pay for.
As to buying a xr650r that's one hell of a first dirtbike. I would not consider it if this is the first bike that you really want to take on dirt trails. But it is freeway-able.

hmmm... even Yamaha's lawyers seems to think so:
Jura concluded: "While we have settled with Patriot, our trademark
infringement case against Yamoto Motor Corporation will continue.
Yamaha will not tolerate Yamoto's fraudulent, deceptive imitation
of its trademarks, copyrights and appearance of its products.
Since Yamoto has not yet approached us about a settlement as
Patriot did, our intention is to litigate this case against Yamoto
Motor Corporation through trial."
