View Full Version : Best place for bike SERVICE?
Hello all,
New to the forum, and to riding...was wondering if anyone out there has any recommendations of good places to get my bike serviced. I (like the newbie I am) dropped my bike when entering a low speed turn and need to get the gear shift replaced cause I bent the hell out of it...Doh!
Thanks, and hello!

You're in West LA, so I'd suggest Marina Suzuki, Andrew (guy in charge of the service dept. there) is a nice enough chap and seems to know what he's doing, but avoid the actual shop owner who seems to be a bit of a muppet.

ooooooooo patrick, thats something you can really easily fix for yourself! don't bother with taking it anywhere...really! you can probably find the part online for cheap and it'll likely take you about 30 minutes to change it out with the tools that came with your bike

Um, ok, so I didn't actually read the question :)
Sandie's right, half hour job even for a newbie, save yourself the $65 labour charge.

I'm doing good, 6 weeks now and the bone's just about healed, turns out the "small" screws in my leg are about 1/4" in diameter and 3-4" long (finally saw the x-ray, must see if I can get a copy).
The bike should be back together tomorrow, they ordered parts based on the initial estimate rather than the official insurance list so they missed the front wheel, soon as that comes in, the bike will be good to go.
I'll be getting my rear shock back from Penske next monday and I'll be ordering racetech forks and valves to be fitted shortly too, it's going to be a completely different animal when I get that done :)
Any suggestions on where to get a new rearset? I have been looking online but havent found any yet...I gotta replace that thing and get back on my bike to practice...hopefully this time I will not drop the darn thing!
THANKS!

It's not the entire rearset that's bust is it? It's just the shifter arm, either way, check www.crotchrocket.com for OEM parts, they have a microfiche online with entries for each part.
For salvaged parts try www.jcmotors.com down in Costa Mesa, don't bother with email, phone them to find out if they have a part.

I have had horrible luck with absolutely every mechanic in Los Angeles. As far as I can tell they all do sloppy work.
I would suggest you get the manuel for your bike and learn how to do everything yourself.
If you insist on putting yourself at risk by letting people who don't know you or care about you then please triple-check eveything when you pick your bike up. And then again before you go canyon riding. And then again during the ride.
I learned this the hard way (http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=7571&highlight=mechanic).
Marina Suzuki? :-&
Honda of Hollywood? :finger:
Your own hard work? Priceless......:)

What problems did you have with Marina Suzuki?
I've had a few supply problems(ordering the wrong parts, missing parts from orders), but I can't fault their work yet, just make sure the shop owner isn't involved at any point in the process.
Of course they're putting my bike back together after a crash right now, so we'll see how well they do (all tupperware damage, how badly can they fuck it up?).

Unfortunately, this is pretty much the case.

If it's aluminum, DO NOT BEND it back!
Aluminum is not very good at bending, steel can be bent back.
For aluminum, heat it up and then slowly try to bend it into shape.
Absolutely not worth it if you are not comfortable with this sort of stuff.
Look for Motorcycle Salvage shops in your area or look here:

moo, i sent you a PM about different ways to fix your shifter....you need to be a little more clear about exactly whats wrong with it, and i'm SURE we can help!
if you want to replace it completely, here's a package on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/Suzuki-SV650-SV-650-TL1000-TL-TLR-1000-GEAR-SHIFT-LEVER_W0QQitemZ4588572863QQcategoryZ35580QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I'll give a third to Marina Suzuki and Andrew. Didn't charge me on an issue I had (that was caused by me being an idiot) and that was pretty cool. I'd trust them with my bike again.
Marina Suzuki is on my shit list. I bought my SV from them. When they worked on it they way over tightened my chain (which I discovered 100 miles later), and there were super greasy handprints all over it. I'm not quite sure why that's such a big deal Nate, but enough people have had nothing but great experiences to say maybe yours was a one off?
I'm willing to agree that in this situation doing it himself is probably the best option. But not everyone can wrench worth anything (myself including) and unless you want to start giving everyone classes, sometimes mechanics are the best option ;)
Oh and suzuki of van nuys charges an arm and a leg for parts, at least they did to me when I was there Saturday
You guys are rockin! Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it. Basically what I did was bend the gear shift lever itself and the connecting rod between that and the gear box when I dropped her. Should be an easy fix that i will definitely do myself. I also broke off the end of my clutch lever and bent the hell outta that too. Already got the clutch lever on order from ebay. Anything that I should know when replacing the clutch lever...I dont wanna mess that up.
Thanks again!

+1 - They'll more than likely have the part, or order it and get it really quick.

+1 ...if I want something done right I bring my bike there. Fair Pricing and the work is perfect.
........if I could do it but I'm to lazy (I am very lazy, a virtual sloth) I take it to MotoTechnica in East L.A. on Ceasar Chavez. Cheap Pricing and the work is fair.

Been to Marina Suzuki and Barry is a little weird, they did good work but did'nt finish when they said they would. So they gave me a discount, but I like Van Nuys Suzuki better. They did excellent crash repair for me. Since I have been involved in motorcycles over thirty years, I felt these guys were ok.

Also, and when they worked on it they way over tightened my chain (which I discovered 100 miles later), and they returned it with super greasy handprints all over it. It's like they just didn't give a fuck about what they do.
Naw, Marina Suzuki can kiss my fat white ass. :ass: :* Pucker up, buttercup.
And you can't fault me for being a dick because I'm always respectful and considerate when I have business with someone. I'm just a dick on the message boards.

get a OEM service manual leaf through it. replacing a rearset and lever is pretty low on the difficulty scale. get a set of basic tools from sears or wherever and go to town.

I almost got in an argument with them over my aftermarket oil filter but they stuck with their opinion and replaced all my oil and filter for free so suzuki wouldn't give me a hard time about warranty.

I'm getting cheesed off with Marina Suzuki now too (http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17124)
I like Andrew, he's a great guy, but the owner's a muppet and someone's obviously screwed the pooch here. hopefully I can get some kind of a discount going on, but seriously, it's looking like iit'll have taken them a month and a half just to get some bodywork, a wheel and a clutch cover sorted out.

Hey Moo.. did you ever get this problem solved.. I pretty much did the same thing as you. I bought a whole new set of rearsets though.. waiting for that to come in the mail. In the meantime.. some other things are going wrong with my bike....
These guys are right.. download the and print the entire service manual that can be found at this site.. and start learning for yourself.. that is what I am going to do. It is over 500 pages though.. so be prepared to do a lot of printing hahaha. Or you could just leave it on the computer and print whatever pages you need. I am just anal and have to have the neat and tidy little book.

If you have any problems, give me a call, I'm right down the street.
Yeah, I'm half done as I have replaced the clutch lever and have ordered the parts on ebay for the gear shift lever and shift rod...it will all be done soon...although I have been riding it in the meantime. I probably shouldnt but ya know its just too much fun. Finally went on the roads...crazy but fun...one must be sooooooo concentrated. I cant go back to the car....
