Anyone think this trend is going to catch on with more people this time around?

Maybe on a GoldWing, but Ill never buy a sport bike with a CVT.

It's not the autotranny that's keeping people off motorcycling. It's the danger factor.

Nice generalization.
A lot of people can't handle the concept of a manual tranny. It may not be the biggest facotr, but it's one of the bigger ones that the motorcycle industry can actually address.

that's rediculous. I just wish that I could get a sequential shifter for my car for less than 10K's. A motorcycle's sequential shifter is the easiest kind of manual tranny.

while it is a generalization I can't say I've had a single occasion where someone found out I rode a motorcycle and said "how on earth do you handle the manual transmition" or "those infernal manual tranny's if not for that I would be on one!" but I think it would be a big help for lazy people and older people and the like :p Also a generalization. Then again if you can't handle the tranny maybe you shouldn't be on the bike :D

I've known a few people who have a triptonic transmission (or other sequntial shifter mechanism) and Mostly they say it was cool for about a week...and then they didn't care anymore and just drove it like a manual.......except on the rare occation that they wanted to race around.

If they can't handle the concept of shifting, what makes you think they can handle the concept of riding?
Learning to shift is a part of learning to ride.
Auto trannys in cars is just a crutch that allows people who are almost too stupid to drive behind the wheel.

Not saying I disagree with you guys... but I have heard several people (they were all girls... but I don't want to make any generalizations :P ) tell me that the clutch would keep them from riding. They're worried they have enough going on without having to deal with shifting.

That's a bit supremacist, don't you think? My truck has an automatic... that make me stupid?
99.8% of drivers out there are f'n retarded... and since we can't get them off the road, the more automation we give them, the better.

I wouldn't necessarily said stupid, but I would say that any feature on a vehicle that makes it easier to drive while talking on a cell phone, fiddling with the radio, putting on makeup, combing their hair, sorting their CD collection, eating, drinking and smoking (incredibly sometimes all at the same time) is inheirently a bad thing.
Driving a car is just too easy a task to engage the human brain enough to keep it from shutting down. At least when you're on a bike, there is enough sensory input to keep you awake. Manual transmissions on cars make them more slightly more challenging to operate. Not much, but a little bit.
As far as bikes, I think the more people that ride, the better and safer it is for motorcyclists. If somebody is unwilling or unable to learn how to shift, and they're willing to pay Honda prices for a bike with an automatic transmission, why is that a bad thing? Is there any doubt that people who at least ride some are more considerate of motorcyclists?

Damn straight! For fatass 2-wheel RVs, I guess that kinda crap is alright, but for most of us, that makes about as much sense as buying a Porsche with an automatic. yuk!

Maybe not a fully automatic tranny, but Yamaha's FJ1300AE for 2006 features electric shift 5 speed push button shifting.
Since most people can't drive a car with maunal shift I think it will attract some attention. And on a sports-tourer it will make life much easier in slow traffic conditions:

Look Ma, no clutch lever!

That's sorta cool... I hope it's closer to BMW's SMG than Toyota's Auto-stick.

Oh.................. never mind.
...................I thought you meant an auto tranny. Like, she's all gussied up and driving up and down Santa Monica Bl. in a slammed Chevy looking for some action. Asking young men if they want to come back to her garage to check out her collection of vintage rides.
........if you know what I mean;)

Well Done.
