Well it's that time of year again... when people from far away come back to find that the bikes they have down here haven't been taken care of. I have a friend coming down from bay area but his Ninja 250 has been left unused for many moons. It starts but promptly dies after giving it some gas, and we were told its a carb issue. However as mechanical n00bs that would rather not make the situation any worse, we'd like some help in getting this running so that he'll have a bike to ride with us over the long weekend. Since towing the bike to a shop is such a chore, it'd be nice if any knowledgable person could come help us out. This is in the Fountain Valley area.

He'll gladly pay $ and complimentary beer is a given. I know it's the holidayz and everyone's busy so any help this week would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like the jets are plugged. You give it gas, the jets are plugged, no gas gets into the combustion chamber, the bike quits. Either that or the gas is not gas anymore, but some sort of varnish...

I would start with draining the gas and putting in some fresh stuff. Make sure all the fuel hose is ok. Check for cracks. Buy some carb cleaner and spray them down.

A little more detail on how to clean the carbs would be helpful. Do you remove the air cleaner, then spray the cleaner into the carb while the engine is running (at what rpm or does it matter?). If the person is a newb, this may not be obvious. Surely there is someone on this site who knows exactly how to go about this.

I know how. Had one a while back. Sounds like the pilots and mid-range jets (at least) are clogged.

PM sent.

Ride safe,

J~
