View Full Version : SV Rider Down on Crest

Well, our group ride up to Newcomb's went very well. A nice stop for a mid-morning snack at Newcomb's and then down to Upper Tujunga Cyn. Rd. and a blast over to the back of the mountains.
But about a mile north of the Angeles Forest Hwy. and Upper Tujunga Cyn. intersection I rounded a corner and saw a bunch of dust floating across the ravine and knew one of us had taken a spill.
At first it looked worse than it was, a little black SV smushed under the guard rail and the rider laying motionless about 10 feet from his bike.
Nukleon and I rode back down to a phone while malkey, mcbandit and the other guys stayed with him. When we got back he was sitting up and talking coherently (thank God). Looks like a busted hand and maybe ankle, but judging by how much force it took us to un-stuff his bike from the guard rail, I think he's fortunate. Also, he was riding with health insurance, so the helicopter ride down the mountain shouldn't cost him too much.
Looks like he puckered in a sweeping lefthander and grabbed too much front brake, but I'm sure when he's feeling up to it he'll fill us in on the details.
I think his name is Trey and I don't know what his handle is here, but he seems like a pretty cool guy and I hope he's doing well.
I'll post a few pics later.

man. I'm sorry to hear that. certainly hope that the rider's okay. We wanted to come up and say hello this morning, but I was werkin on the Duc last night, and found out the rear brake master cylinder is not moving fluid. so Julia has no rear brake. At all.... As I took it off...

Nice parking job.
Looks like it took a great deal of effort to wedge it under there like that.

We figured it was a total loss judging by the fact that we had to dis-assemble the guard rail to get it out.

But upon closer inspection, though she obviously needed some massive dental work, it appears Trey just might have the track bike he was talking about turning it into.
Hope you are feeling okay buddy. Let us know how things turn out.

Hey guys,
That was Trey. I just talked to him. His pinkie finger on his right (dominant) hand is jacked up. They are saying prob ligament damage to his hand and his ankle. We're going to the hospital tomorrow so he can get some MRIs done.
I'll let him tell it more in detail, but he grabbed too much front break in a corner and highsided into the guard rail.
But as we were both saying "It could have been much worse."

ok...so what is his handle? Man im glad he's ok...maybe if I were there I couldve helped somehow
I am glad Trey is ok, it really scared me, because I thought that he was hurt a lot worse. He didn't have much runoff before the metal barrier.
From my vantage point-
I backed off going into the turn because at first I thought someone laid it down, but I didn't see anyone. I was hoping it was just a dust devil, because of the fact that it was a large dirt turnoff/winds the day before. I couldn't see a bike or a rider until the exit of the turn. When I got to him he was alert and obviously in pain. Getting his bike out was no small task, the FD couldn't get it to budge with their 4 foot prybars and everyone pulling. Fortunately my brother brought his truck, an 8 foot pole and we were able to get it out.
I will leave the rest of the details up to Trey (I don't believe he has a screen name). I hope he makes a quick recovery and I am glad he is ok.

Trey mang! Hey I hope you heal fast...good thing you had health insurance and I hope it covers heli-rides! At least you were conscious for it right? Hope it was a little bit of fun amidst the pain of crashing.
But yeah good luck getting the hand, ankle and whatever else fixed....glad it wasn't worse...scary enough seeing you on the ground after the dust cleared....that road is fun (my first time on it)....next time we'll ride more of it.

I spoke to Trey yesterday afternoon. He was in fair amount of pain at first in his legs and hand. But luckily it is just the pinkey on his right hand that bore the brunt of the injuries. Main thing is he is going to be ok. :D Another advert for always wearing your gear.
Officer Stout must have had a field day when he came up to take a statement from Trey. The guy was trying to dig Trey's license out of his pocket whilst the medics were working on him.
By the time we got the bike back to my gaff he had already texted and left a voicemail to find out how his bike was. The radiator, tank, water pump cover, tachometer and rear subframe are all buggered. :(
Thank you to bsmi, mc bandit, nukeleon, natedawg and Greg for all your help. Much appreciated :D

the cops did the same thing when tie pilot went down....
one minute i'm seeing his bike flipping 20 feet in the air and ride up to see he is unconscious, then the medics are working on him, then the cops are asking for his insurance card...
all i could think was "who the F cares!?!?!?!? let him get on the choppah!"
man, what happens if they don't fill out their paperwork at the end of the day? does their chief give them thirty lashes or something?
glad trey is alright.

It never fails. Santa Ana winds come in, blow dirt all over the road you get into a corner, hit that stuff and boom... Downed rider. Remember the day there were 5 accidents in the crest? That was a day after Santa Ana winds. I'm tellin' ya', no riding in the canyons after the winds. You need to give it a week or so to get cleaned off. Or at least slow down the pace. But that just wouldn't be any fun now would it?

Well....it's me Trey. first off, thank you very much to everyone there who kept me alert and safe until the fire dept arrived.
I will say that this crash was completely my fault. i was way too cocky that day and I paid for it dearly. I entere a beautiful turn where the was gravel on the outside white line. Instead of leaning more to tighten the turn, my dumbass quickly grabbed the front brake and I highsided over the handlebars into the guardrail. I guess I'm pretty lucky I wasn't seriously injured, but I'm pretty pissed at myself for not only being cocky that day, but even more so for not handling the situation better than I did.
Again< I want to thank everyone there for quickly getting the situation under control and to everyone here for their best wishes and cocern. Except for the occassional squid, I haven't met anybody on a bike who isn't very nice and supportive (excluding Officer Stout).
Thanks again everyone

Don't beat yourself up, Man. Everybody eats shit sooner or later. It's part of the learning curve. It took me a fractured wrist, and then 6 months later a busted ankle, before I finally learned to slow it down.
I was just glad to see you sitting up and talking when Nuke and I got back from the phone. Riding down to the phone I was afraid we had a real situation there.
Don't suppose you got any cool pics from the helicopter, didja?

You guys are great. Way to take care of a brutha, seriously. When I went down in my moment of squidliness, it was a lot like what Trey did (except I don't recall grabbing a fistfull of brake, I just fixated on the end of the turn and of course, proceeded to drive straight for it). Oddly enough, my right pinky is all I really damaged (permanently, anyway). It's still kinked to this day. LOL Let's hear it for armor jackets, kevlar gloves, and skid lids!
Trey, glad to hear that you're in better shape than your bike. I know how you feel. I am still getting over my fear of loooong left-handers that I can't see the exit on. I leave my ego at home these days. Take care.
Attached for your viewing pleasure, my busted-ass pinky at the doc-in-a-box, 6 hours after going down....

Trey, I'm just glad you are OK. Now I guess you can make a track bike out of the SV and get a 636 for fun or even better, get a SV1K. Don't beat yourself up over it. Shit happens. Again I'm just glad you are OK.

you're clearly (IMO) not ready for such a bike, i don't wanna sound harsh but i say fix up the SV and keep riding it. it'll be cheaper and you'll learn more.

Hey, I was behind Trey on the R1....it's not the bike...it's the rider...Trey admittedly just had a momentary lapse in judgement....I've done it too on my SV....took a blind right too fast on a still unfamiliar GMR....surprised by a left turn...dabbed brakes mid corner (panic reaction) and lowsided. I learned from it...but yeah..it sucked.
So there's nothing wrong with upgrading....after all...the speed with which you take a corner has everything to do with your gray matter, not the bike you're riding.
Heal fast Trey!

Hope to fixed soon and back riding with you Burke and Dan

Trey glad to hear you are OK. I'm sure the next day you felt like you just got hit all over your body. Thats how I felt after my off.
Hope the pinky and ankle get better soon. Get that SV in track shape quick so you can join Malkey and I on some track days and a class or two next year.
We're thinking of a Keith Code or a Pridmore class.

Oooh I'd love to try a Pridmore class on the Har Juan!
Yeah Trey get better mang...yer definitely ready for any bike you want...you got skillz...hey how was the heli ride? Any fun?
Funny when you say 'Burke and Dan' coz Burke is my last name hehe.
Hang in there meng... sounds like you've got a positive attitude and a hellofa support group down there.
I've avoided group rides mostly because I tend to push myself and have a hard time keeping my competitiveness in check-- I'd want to keep up with the guys who are faster than me.
Question for you, all chest-puffing aside: do you feel you took that corner faster than you would have solo?

i tend to think (from personal experience) that the bike you ride does matter how much you ride up in the hills or in the corners. "oh this bike can handle more than anything i can throw at it" then you start to wonder where the limits are and start pushing which is where the ego/problem starts coming into play. getting cocky on a race bike w/ lights is very easy to do.
also it'd be cheaper to throw in suspension mods to the SV and fix it up so it'll corner as well if not better than any 600. I4's aren't all that and i have had more than a few ;)

I've never seen Trey ride, but I met him once.
Judging by the crazy strong bootleg firewater he drinks that I got a taste of, his next bike should be a turbo 'busa drag racer.
get well, rock on.

Trey, I'm curious as to whether or not you actually high-sided due a brief skid mark on the asphault followed immediately by gouges in the dirt as your SV slid to the guard rail. Even if the bike had managed flip over in a milisecond, it's still positioned improperly for a highside unless it flipped twice. I think your SV would be a lot more beat up if you'd high-sided.
I'm not trying to question your credibility here, especially after such an unfortunate experience, but that's been bugging me since Sunday when you first told us you'd flipped it, because when I rolled up and got my initial look at the scene my immediate thought was "Looks like he grabbed the front too hard and low-sided it."
Hope you're doing better, mang.

Yeah looked like a lowside to me too.....looks like the bike slid out and went right into the guardrail...but who knows...sometimes it's hard to remember exactly what happened in a crash. Course...it could have still been a highside where the bike landed like a lowside....that happened to me at Fontana. I was flipped onto my left shoulder and head but the bike crashed on the right side...weird eh?

I would check on an Insurance quote on the 600RR before buying, This accident will go down on your semi permanent record and I cant imagine your insurance being low cost on an RR.:(

I have a friend T.J. who was telling me a story about his last wreck. He got knocked out and doesn't remember telling everyone he was alright or walking back to the house. He remembers sitting in a chair with no idea how he got there and asking his friend what happened. "You under-rotated a back-flip." -wich didn't make any sense because if anything he Over-rotates, so he says what he's thinking,"That's just silly. ....What happened?" response:"You under-rotated a back-flip." pause"That's just silly. ....What happened?"
...this went on for several minutes. even minor incidents can mess with your head.
Hope you feel better mang!
