I just bought a 2002 SV650S and I have a stupid question. What is the proper procedure for starting the bike? It seems that the bike doesn't want to start again after I come to a stop, hit the engine cutoff and turn off the ignition. However, if I manually move the bike into a different position, it will start with no problem.

Heres what I do to start it. Put up the kickstand, pull in clutch, turn on ignition, make sure engine cutoff is in right position, hit starter.

I'm sure it's something stupid, anyone have input?

so your saying if you walk the bike like a foot it will start doing the exact same thing as before you move it?

I'm saying if I turn off the engine and ignition, then turn the ignition on again and try to start the bike it won't start. No engine turning, nothing. I made sure I had it in nuetral, I made sure the ignition was on, I made sure the engine cutoff was in the right position.

It's hard to explain, but if I move the bike while its off into a different position. It will usually start. I'm new to riding so I'm thinking it's just some stupid oversight but I'm confused.

Does that make any more sense?

One of your safety switches has to be intermittently failing (starter button, kill switch, side stand switch, neutral safety switch, clutch switch, starter interlock relay , or even your starter solenoid). Is the neutral light on the whole time?

The neutral light is on if I put it in neutral and try to start it. But if I put it in 1st gear and try to start it, it isn't.

This morning I tried the same thing I had been doing, moving the bike into a different position to start it. That doesn't even work anymore.

bdmizzle,

It's probably the clutch switch. (I've seen it happen a couple of times on friend's bikes.) The dealers sometimes don't route the wires correctly, and they pull loose.

Take a look at the two wires that connect to the bottom of the clutch-perch. Make sure that they are plugged firmly onto the tabs. That should take care of it. Unless I'm wrong...

Luck,

J~

I checked that this morning and everything seemed to be connected. But I will check it again when I go home. Does anyone else have any feedback? I'm hoping it's not a major issue.

I would check to see if the starter relay is getting power when you press the starter button. Check the shop manual for the wiring diagrams.

Try shorting the clutch safety switch with a wire or paper clip first. It most likely is that switch, but it will look "ok" even though it has failed. This will save you a lot of time and money prior to taking it to the shop if it is this switch.

I really don't know anything mechnically as far as bikes go. How would I do that?

There is an electrical block switch underneath the clutch lever. Pull it out and you will notice two prongs. Insert something conductable (wire or paper clip) between the prongs and push the block switch back on.

Ride around for a while with this and see if you notice the problem going away. If in fact it has been remedied then the real solution is to purchase a new switch which can be had for relatively cheap (under $10).
