I recently bought an 02 SVS with about 3800 miles on it. Since then I have put 600 miles on it or so. The previous owner stated all he had done was changed the oil. I'm wondering what type of maintenance should be done either now or in the near future. Can anyone give me some insight. I'm very new to bikes and all the maintenance intervals that come with them.

In another 2,400 miles, change the oil again. Oh, and clean and lube that chain every 300+ miles or so. It can never be too clean or lubed (like your [pistons]).

What do you use to lube the chain?
Whats the next major maintenance interval?
I would change the oil now just to be over safe. Also maybe change the coolant since your supposed to every 2 years I think it is.
Also I like chain wax. it flies off less and doesn't make such a mess.

I prefer the non-wax type because less dirt and filth sticks to it. Also, to clean the chain before u lube i use Oil Eater (the stuff that cleans oil off driveways, and can be bought at Costco for like 10-15 bucks for a gallon of it) I heard somewhere that it is o-ring safe. Can anyone confirm for me?
i've heard but not tried kerosene is a good chain cleaner.
One more thing about chain cleaning...a Grunge Brush is a great tool for scrubbing all sides of ur chain easily and safely while running the engine with the wheel spinning while on a rear stand. I got mine at Hollywood Honda, but i've seen them around other places too.

DO NOT CLEAN THE CHAIN WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!!! even with a Grunge Brush. Its not worth it.#-o

yes, i saw the post with the guy who lost part of his fingers, too...
And after using the brush, i feel it is the safe way to scrub the chain with the wheel spinning by itself. My hands are well clear of the chain and sprockets.
I think safely cleaning the chain using the power of the engine to spin the tire is within my abilities...the brush does a great job and makes it safe.

Low,
I didn't watch the vid on that post (work puter), I knew a guy who thought the same as you got complacent and now uses a thumb brake. Not questioning your abilities, just concerned don't want you to get hurt.:D
