View Full Version : Finally gonna paint frame

ok, i think im finally gonna paint my frame sometime this month...how long do you think the process will take to paint the frame, subframe, swing arm, rims? I think I will need to do it bit by bit so parts can dry quicker and I can use the bike if needed
so...
1.what paint should I use? is there some sort of anti grease paint floating around
2. what sandpaper grit should i use to sand down the stuff prior to painting?
3. do I need to primer?
4.roughly how many coats should do the trick?
5. after the paint dries do I have to wet sand? if so what grit?
6. No the next question..lever it matte black (flat) or put a clear coat on it and make it glossy..hmm
yes, I am too self centered to do a search and I want people to respond to a thread i created myself :D

haha i knew that was coming..hence the last statement i made ;)
you think black rims with copper spokes would look cool?
The frame on our bike gets pretty hot so i would get some brake caliber paint. Automotive paint works great if you can find it in a rattle can(there is a place by my house where i got mine for the rims... holding on strong still) I believe i used 800 grit sandpaper to take off the clear coat from the rims. But yeah, primer will be needed. Wetsanding will make it a lot smother. As for painting the frame and rims... it will be quick. The thing that takes a long time is preping everything. Taping everything is a beeyotch. The rims alone will take a day. I don't know about the frame.... cuz i've never done that.... i will one of these days. Let me know when your gonna do this... i wanna laugh at you when you fuck up. Btw, im drunk right now so if i messed up somewhere....i don't give a damn so f u. Umm.. ok .. im done... time to pass out.. goodnight... f'ers

Good. i'm glad someone is going to do this before me. I've been thinking about doing this myself. Now I can wait and learn from your experience. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

powdercoat, period.
it is not that expensive, all it will cost is the time to disasemble the bike.
powdercoat is easy, you take in the frame, give them a check and pick it up a week later done, and done right.
powdercoat will cost the same or less than the primer, paint, sandpaper and supplies it will take to do it.
On top of all that, powdercoat is tough, it won't chip off or scratch like paint will. paint does have a habit of chipping and peeling, worse if it is not applied right or cheap paint is used.

what you spend in rattle can paint and sandpaper as well as tape and any other incidentals will cost you nearly as much and wont last anywhere NEAR as long as powdercoat.
There are several shops in El Cajon that can do the frame on the cheap.

I bought a repair manual that walks you through it step by step.

Why bother just painting the frame with the bike together.
That is even more hack than stripping it and using rattle can.
Take it down, power coat it, or don't bother.

too much trouble taking it all apart.
You guys underestimate the power of the rattle can.

Its not hard to strip a bike. Me and my brothers painted my little bros bike. It took me about 4 hours to strip the bike ('97 GS500E) down to the frame. Just make sure you have lots of sandwich bags and tape to label all the parts. In all it took less than a week to strip bondo paint and repaint the body frame swingarm rims. We also replaced tires levers etc. Looks great ,but not rattle can, we bought automotive paint and spayed the frame black with copper Pearl and the body copper. We got it done it a week and a half in our spare time.

I found some automotive paint that comes in a rattle can. Got it from some auto paint place in El Monte. Really good prices. My rims have held up good. I even use wd40 to clean them and nothing fades or anything....gooood

That looks hawt mang! You need to get some lowers tho. ;) Hey how well does that stuff stick to metal? I am thinking about painting some parts on my R1...what kind of paint is it? Flat black should work..I want to paint my passenger pegs and perhaps my main pegs too (and chainguards).

Lowers would cover up all the work he just did...

i think my brother wants a chin spoiler, that would totally complete the look of the bike. If i had the money i'd buy him one, then i'd ride around and pretend it's my bike :D
and do wheelies, and stoppies, and supermans. ( :squid: )
lol j/k i wouldn't,
but any of you want this done to your bike, he charges 50 bucks for labor :)

thanks all...
dan, yes the paint sticks to metal well...well first I degreased the bits, i sanded them..put on duplicolor 500 deg temperature resistant primer..sanded it, then put the duplicolor 500 degree semi gloss blank (2 coats)
I dont think i want lowers, most definetly a chin spoiler =) maybe one from jmv hint hint

Fri 2/10/06, 3:07AM
Thanks Jas...where'd ya get the Duplicolor? A chin spoiler would look good too..the bike needs something to tie the copper together with the bottom of the bike....it'll look uber hawt then. :D

From the pics it looks like some =D>GOOD work there... Glad to see you put the extra bit of effort in to it and also did the forks, like when you and Dan were hashing out the pre-vis. I'd be interested in knowing how well it holds up over general use period/time. Like where your legs and boots will make contact...
BTW Dan, Dupli Paints can be found at most any of the chain auto stores. I see them at Checkers and AutoZones all the time... ;)
Oh, and indeed, I was thinking the same thing that some extra 'chin' plastics on the lower would polish the look off well... Maaaybe a hugger too, but definitely a chin spoiler...
Try for >THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4611699636)<... Bid the max your willing the spend @ the last possible seconds (if you can) to keep the price down and depending on whatever the seller's reserve is set at it might work out to be a $core...

Fri 2/10/06, 10:23AM
That looks the dog's danglies Jason. :D Some black brake and clutch levers would look good on it too.
soulofadra6o
Fri 2/10/06, 12:11PM
yes, svs is right..i got the paint at pepboys =)
i will inform everyone how the paint holds up after time, I am concered about the heel guard where my boots will rub and the part of the frame where my legs go up against...hopefully as the frame heats up it'll bake the paint on there
soulofadra6o
Fri 2/10/06, 3:57PM
well i dont know how well the heel guards will last..i took the bike for a quick 10 min spin to get the feel for riding again and to see if everything is in working order...scratches at the face of the healguard, and the paint is coming off on the bottom edge....shit...hmm, wonder if I add a clear coat if that will protect a lot better..will keep you all informed, I can tell you powder coat is a lot better if you have the time and money
Since you used flat a clear would definitely help. Flat isn't nearly as strong as gloss paint.
Looks god for sure the only thing I never like about the rattle can jobs is how the bolts get sprayed too but that's just my being a perfectionist.
Hey soul... how long did it take to prep the bike... and what parts did you take off? I'm doing this soon too :)

Sat 2/11/06, 7:49PM
I think I am gonna powdercoat the passenger pegs and perhaps the rearsets...or is there a way to 'set' the paint so it doesn't rub off? Maybe clearcoat as you said Jas?
Looks great..can't wait to see your bike with the chin spoiler on there.
soulofadra6o
Sun 2/12/06, 12:04AM
nuke: ya im gonna do the clear coat hopefully it will help
dom: i covered some bolts but then i just got lazy and spray painted over the rest =)
val: it took me a while the prep, i took off all the body work, seat, rims, i put plastic bags over the tank and the exposed subframe section. I used masking tape to tape off small sections, used plastic bag to cover up the engine in between the frame...then used paper towels for sections like the shock area, wrapped the chain in paper towels. Prep time i would guess took a solid 6 hours if you combine it..im just making a quick guess

ok so i've had it painted for a few months..it's holding on really well, havent used any harsh cleaners like degreasers on it yet, but it isnt chipping (except for the heel guards) and it seems to be holding up pretty good for 20ish bucks in paint and a little elbow grease...i noticed on one of my forks there is some white spots like i ran over paint or something..i dunno what that is, maybe brake fluid somehow leaked out??

has any one had their frame and swing arm anodized?

Dupli-color engine enamel has always been my first choice. It goes on realy well and leaves a great glossy finish. It also seems to resist almost all the degreasers I have put on it.
I was also thinkin that that Dupli-coloy truck bedliner spray might be a good idea too.

I asked about this once. SOmeone said that the welds might come out a different color. I think it would be cool to have the frame anodized, depending on if this is an issue or not

someone should try one of those cheesy home-anodizing kits, you apply a weak charge to the frame and swab this solution all over and it bonds to the aluminum. Might look alright if you took your time and kept things real clean.

I know this is late as hell...but a tip for painting stuff like frames is using aluminum foil to mask. It hangs on the irregular surfaces and you don't need masking tape...can someone say 99 cent store?

Sat 7/1/06, 10:39PM
Well it took a good 8 hours or so, things were a little slow because I was working in the sun, but as you can see I took my time with the masking.
I'm happy with how it turned out in terms of coverage. I feel like I would have rather used another paint though. This was Rustoleum high temp paint. We'll see how it holds up...

Wow! Personally, I'm not a big fan of the copper color but seeing it paired with a black frame and lowers really looks good!
What other paint were you considering, BTW?
I bet the neighbors were wondering just what the hell you were doing. This looks like a mod I may really consider doing someday...

I saw this other paint for appliances, some epoxy-like spray enamel from Rustoleum. I was at Home Depot, so the selection wasn't fantastic... I was worried that the appliance paint might not handle bike temperatures though. In retrospect, I should have gone for it.
Especially in the boot areas where there's constant scuffing against the frame, something durable and scratch resistant would be nice.
Also, I'd highly recommend sanding the frame down beforehand with 320 grit or so to promote adhesion. The existing paint's smooth finish won't let the fresh spray tack on very easily.

lol u masked off the SV like i did...damn it looks awesome with lowers, but me personally i like the belly pan look...you should put some sort of clear coat on the rear set heel guards
