I know this must sound like a really silly question to must but please excuse me I am a newbie and I want to know how much money I am going to be spending before I go to a shop. I bought a great bike with lots of extras. I want the extras on the bike but am to nervous to try to do them myself. Therefore I was going to take the bike to a shop and tell them to put on the parts and see if anything is wrong with the bike. Does anyone know how much it would cost me to have these items installed by a shop?
Robert's switched TRE
PAIR mod
GSXR 1000 rear shock
Acumen gear indicator
Speigler steel braid brake lines

You know, it may be worth your while to get Robert (racinteach) to help you with all that stuff. He's not in San Diego, but he knows his stuff and he won't screw you. Unless you're a hot chick, of course. :p
(And it's not a silly question, IMO.)

I can't really say what a shop will quote you at for all the work, but the shop by me charges 70 an hour for labor.
The TRE you could do yourself.
I wouldn't even do the PAIR mod, not worth the money you will pay to have it done.
My 2 cents

Maybe you could try to get a maintenence/mod day thread started? I'm sure some of the peeps on here would be more than happy to help you out with these mods.

Don't bother removing the PAIR system, you'll void the warranty anyway, just cover up the intake hole in the airbox so it can't suck any air in.
I keep meaning to get around to it, the popping and backfiring in this cold weather is really starting to get on my nerves.

Does my bike even need all this stuff? Kyoseki I do hear alot of popping coming from my pipes, but I know I would not be able to put anything over the wachamajiggy close to the dinglerod..hahaha. I am not mechanical at all. If I were to purchase the service manuel would that help me out with these upgrades? If these things are not going to make my bike better than I might not worry about it and just save money.

Tallrider, none of the mods are really necessary. The TRE is good if you always redline it in all the gears, but if you are shortshifting (just cruising), it's not that big a deal. The PAIR just cuts down on the backfiring (noise), nothing else. If you go fast in the twistys, the rear shock would be good, but if you just cruise, it won't do anything for you at all. The gear indicator just reminds you what gear you are in if you forget (you are not too old, so you probably can remember what gear you are in anyway), and you already have the steel braid line on the front brake (which is the important one), adding it to the rear brake and the clutch is primarily for looks. What can I say, I like all that shit, but it is not really necessary. If money is an issue, save it and just ride. Should you ever decide you want to do some mods, you have them waiting. Whatever you do, have fun!

Thanks John for the clarity on all the extra parts I got for my bike. The guy that sold them to me gave me a half ass run down of what all the extras did, so I am glad there are people like you on this site that look out for newbies like myself..:D I want to put all the extras on but don't want to mess up anything. I like all shit as well John that is why I had to jump on this deal..

Despite having an engineering degree I generally never applied a wrench to any of my bikes, anything more than chain tensioning I usually got done at a shop.
On the SV I was determined to start learning, so I've done a few minor things (fender kit, mufflers, air filter, snorkel etc..) and had friends who know what they're doing help with the big stuff (fork springs, rear shock).
Disabling the PAIR is a very easy task, remove the seat (remove the two small plastic side panels, then remove the two bolts for the seat) and undo the two bolts at the front of the fuel tank and prop it up with the stand (the thing that looks like a bent coat hanger that should be under the passenger seat/cowl somewhere, a straight piece of thick wire with a loop at one end).
Get a phillips screwdriver and undo the 7 bolts that hold the top of the airbox on, remove that, then lift off the air filter and you'll be looking straight into the bottom of the airbox, you'll see the intakes for the cylinders and a small standing pipe, just block that pipe off with the rubber cap from the PAIR removal kit and put everything back together.

I did the 2004 GSXR600 in my 2005 SV650 it tokk less than 2 hours but there is some cutting involved...
If you get the shock you can count on some help over here.

Brake lines are a bitch. Your gonna need 2 people and a lot of brake fluid if you have never done them before. Don't forget to compress the calipers after you replace the lines and begin the long process of bleeding and readding to get the pressure right.
Whats this PAIR mod?? The only thing I did to my airbox was remove the snorkal on the fronttop section for a nice straight intake from the gastank gap.
Don't take it to a dealer, they will charge you enough to buy a bunch more mods that you could put on heh. They wanted to charge me $900 to add a dyno comm III, slipon yosh, steel brake lines, windshield faring and pegs lol.
The best mod I got was $300 bucks for a plug n play Scorpio alarm system. Best friggin alarm I've ever bought. Proximity sensor, shock sensor, anti-hotwire rig, anti bikejacking (cuts off engine after 15 seconds). All controlled from a 1.5 mile FM 2way reciever. Very small device too, also has timestamping for when an alarm goes off. Shows the alarm type that was triggered and at what time.

I think sooner or later there's gonna be another suspension tech day where someone can help you put the shock on. I'm mostly a commuter and the new shock makes a world of difference even on the slab. Steering is much more responsive and the ride is much more comfortable.
