View Full Version : Tip over covered by comprehensive?

Hi y'all

I just tipped over my 2001 SV650 bike 2 hours after I signed the title! I then tried to stand it, but then of course it had to tip over to the other side.... Thankfully it is a used bike, but I feel very bad anyway...

Better in the parking lot than on the road, but it was really embarrassing, a couple of college kids were around and I could see they were having a great time... :)

Now I'm left with broken brake and clutch levers and also a broken shift level. I did buy insurance before I got the bike, but I didn't buy collision, only comprehensive ($100 deductible).

I called the dealer and the parts are 60.85 for the brake lever, 16.65 for the clutch level, and 65.92 for the shift lever, plus $72 labor (1 hour), so that's about $235 including tax...

I'm wondering whether 'tip-over' covered by comprehensive? If so I'll just leave it to the dealer and have everything fixed including some scratches etc.

If it's not covered I guess I'll just get the shift lever and clutch lever and fix it myself, and wait until I can get a used brake level on ebay or something...

What should I do?

Thanks in advance...

Also, it's actually very difficult to shift with the broken shift lever... I may even have to call the roadside assistance (I bought this too...)

you bought roadside assistance but not full coverage insurance? dood, dont ride without FULL coverage, and preferably max limits on everything.

As far as the repairs, yeah your insurance will probably cover it, but your rates will go up. Fix the parts yourself, get full coverage and be safe.

Welcome aboard.

not the easiest thing to do for first riders especially if he is a young male...i was quoted for 7k for full coverage, which was more than the bike, but i did get comp and liability

as for the new guy, the best thing to do is get used to the bike..yes you dropped it, u got that out of the way, it took me a month and a half to finally drop my bike..then after that i didnt really care anymore (which lead to a lot more drops based on laziness haha) as for the other people..screw them, they just wish they can be a kick ass pimp on an SV like you, if any of them rode they would've understood and helped you, as for the parts..like greg said fix it yourself...those parts arent worth having your rate raised. Just look around ebay for a cheap set and try to do it yourself or ask one of us for help!

Well for $150 I wouldn't bother telling the insurance company, your deductible is probably more than that even assuming you're covered.

Check prices on parts at www.crotchrocket.com or give Leo on the board a yell and see if he can do you a deal.

Comprehensive covers theft, fire, falling objects and "Acts of God".

For the minor costs associated with your tip over, it would be better to eat the costs vs. higher premiums. It does not matter if you swith companies either. All the major players exchange info.

As an aside, you could get the shift lever and brake lever welded. Got my brake lever welded for $20 vs. $60+. Not as pretty, but saved cash and went riding the next day.

dude a clutch lever is 8 bucks from cycle gear, you can tap the shift lever for under 5 bucks w/ parts from your local home depot, brake lever should be in tact (only the tip broke off right?)

all easy fixes you can do at home under an hour

parts should cost you under a hundred bucks easy

if you absolutely need oem stuff check out ronayers or oneidasuzuki

Thanks for the advice...

Jansuh, What do you mean I can tap the shift lever for under 5 bucks? Can you elaborate?

As most of you mentioned, break and clutch lever is not a big deal since only the tips are broken. But I definitely need something for a shift lever right away to ride the machine... A cheap cure is good. Are all these parts aluminum? I called a place today asking if they could weld them on, but they said they could not on aluminum.

I am in Reno, so for parts, I'm looking for ebay or other online shops including used part shops.

Thanks!

Alright....a set of hand levers should run less than $20 on ebay. Just get aftermarket levers. They work fine.

as far as the shifter on the left hand side....drill a hole near the end of whatever is left, put a bolt through the hole, lock it down with a couple of nuts, and wrap heavily with electrical or duct take. You won't even miss it.

I did the online quote thing with Progressive on my ZX-12R and it came out to some insane amount, so I don't smell nothing.

My guess is they might be competitive if you got an agent on the phone, but if they are going to jack you on a quote on the internet, f**k 'em.

Oh and if you need to know what people are talking about when they say drill out the shifter, use the search function on the site's Home Page. Search for "shifter".

Woah, the dealer is ripping you off. I did the same thing recently, actually, mine fell to the left side and needed to replace the clutch lever and the turn signal. The lever cost me $10 bucks at the dealer. It was easy to install too, don't let the dealer rip you off for that work. I could have saved a few bucks online too.

When my bike tipped over, the safety switch broke on the clutch lever, so my bike wouldn't start, I took the bike into Mission Motorsports (Irvine) and the charged me $78 bucks to tell me that and put a small jumper wire so the bike would start, talk about bastards! I will never give them my business again.

Check out http://www.temeculamotorsports.com/ . They have OEM parts for the sv650 at good prices, cheaper than my dealer.

I need to invest in some frame sliders, incase it ever happens again. I hear Motosliders are pretty good.

Progressive sucks balls..they are just Progressively more expensive every year. McGraw is good...so are Universal Underwriters.

As for the drop...yeah, it sucks hard that you dropped it so fast...but don't feel bad, I dropped my brand new 2005 R1 TWICE within like two weeks. It was heartbreaking..and one of the drops wasn't even my fault really..there was an issue with the TPS (which Yamaha later fixed on warranty) which was causing stalls at low speed...little did I know about that when the thing shut off during a tight, low speed turn.

But..the bike is fine...can't even tell it's been dropped unless you really look, and I've since put frame sliders on it...

So, fix your bike up, get some sliders on it...accept the fact that you probably would have dropped it later on anyway and have fun riding! :D (Don't claim it). ;)

I am a brand new rider and got full coverage for $520 a year through State Farm. I am not young though and no points. ;)

you're in reno? talk to zoran aka TWF on the board. he's in the area and the SV guru. reknown as THE guy to talk to if you ever have a question about your SV. he should be able to get you in and out real quick.

don't claim that on your insurance. it'll just raise your (and everyone else's) rates. the stuff you're replacing is very minor stuff. if you go aftermarket, it costs 4/5 that price for the parts.

7k is ridiculous. By the way, Progressive is lame. The first year they gave me a great rate and I loved how easy they were to pay. The next year they sent me a renewal for twice as much. No new accidents or tickets, so wtf. :finger: I then changed to McGraw. I have the basic, plus uninsured, plus comprehensive, plus collision for around $500 a year. The limits are not maxed out, I think they are 30/50 with a $300 deductible. Oh yeah, and that is with one at fault accident with property damage and no injury. Which comes off my record in 2 months.

And when I tipped my bike over and broke the shift lever, I replaced with a new one by myself. It was a piece of cake. Then I had the bf drill a bolt into the broken one and that and the wrenches are with my tool kit in case I have an oppsie. When I tipped my bike over, I was a block away from home, so I drove it home in first gear.

Thank you all. I'll try to find zoran. I think I found the parts on ebay, for the total of something like $60. I also found another welding shop close to work, so I'm going to check it out today. If they can give me a quick fix, I guess that'll work fine.

Many thanks again! I am feeling a lot better this morning. A good night's sleep is helpful to ameliorate your damaged ego.

My insurance is progressive, and I am paying $196 a year for liability, underinsured (both 15000/30000), and comprehensive ($100 deductible). Collision costs me something like $290 extra (with $500 deductible), I just declined that... I'm over 30 with no points, but just started motorcycling. Someone pointed out that having no experience will boost your premium?

So it seems like everyone's suggesting for a full coverage... I thought I was going to quit motorcycling once I have my first crash on this thing... :) Oh, I know it's a matter of when but not if... I'll definitely check out McGraw next year. Thanks!

I checked the weld shop and they have minimum of $25 per job, with $75 per hour. I told him about the work and he said that'll cost around $40, so I guess I'm better off ordering new parts...

So I just ordered all parts from forwardmotionmc from ebay ($47 plus S/H, waiting for the combined shipping cost).

I'll let you know how this goes. Thanks again for all your advice.
