View Full Version : AFM Race Day

Since club racing has kind of become the hot topic on the board, I thought I'd start a thread about the AFM races at Buttonwillow this past weekend (3/26/06). The whole TWF team was there, of course, and kicked ass like usual, but two of our own regular members and WSMC racers, Tom and Shandra, raced on Sunday as well. Also, I believe April's husband, Freddi, raced out there yesterday.
Sandie and I drove up in her company's pimped out Chevy SSR to watch (shit, we should have taken a picture of it). The weather was perfect. Tom and Shandra said they had a lot of fun racing with this club, so I think I will have to save my pennies and do the AFM round at Buttonwillow in October.
Tom and I took some pictures and he should be posting them soon.

I wanted to go, but I had other things I had planned already. :( Too bad I'm not a flake (for the most part).
2 words: contigency money :D
Actually I won't be getting any $ because I didn't even think of filling out any forms before the race, but I would have qualified for $40 from Michelin in clubman.

what did you end up placing in that race, after leading for the first half of it?
Kurt'sSV

Tom took 4th in that race.

Well, even if you did turn in the forms, you shouldn't expect to see anything from them, soon. I still have yet to see anything from Michelin after my February results. Maybe they'll pick it up now that the rest of the country has started their 2006 season.

Kurt & Sandie good seeing you guys out there! Freddi really enjoyed his 1st race. It's always a great show watching the Twin Works guys out there.
See you guys soon!

Good to see you again, Tom and good to meet you, Shandra.
I saw the SSR. Very nice.
Great weekend. The only thing I would change was my damn starts. I haven't practiced any starts on my new bike and I went backwards on the start in each race. This did make for some good battles as I slowly worked my way back up the field.

Women racers do finish in front of some of the guy racers, if that is what you are asking. There are a lot of guys out there for them to beat.

I never knew riding for 30th and 36th places can be so much fun! :) Hopefully I'll be able to make an Infinion round soon. I felt like an adopted kid that was spoiled rotten in the afm pits last weekend, so I better get the same treatment at the next afm event. lol
Thanks again for the reminder, Vik. ;)

The pics turned out good. I wish I could have taken shots from turn 1 for the first race and then from the final turn in the second race, but the batteries only last for so long. Also wish we would have gotten a shot of Tom leading the Clubman Lightweight race.
I started this thread thinking Kurt Spencer and Zoran would post in it, but apparently they have lost their ability to type or something. Odd, because they both like to talk about how good they ride. :p So I'll post that Spencer had two run away wins on the day in Formula 4 and 650 Twins. From the looks of the first round, he could very well be on his way to taking both those championships this year.
And as always, Jeff Tigert was awesome to watch. He was out just on his 600 and took third, but almost second, in the Formula Pacific race against open class bikes. The speed he would carry through the right hand kind and the left hand kink following the wheelie bump and preceding the bus stop was amazing. It's something you just have to see.

Nice pics Tom! :worthy: Those ER6 bikes look awesome in race-trim! Anyway, looks like a hell of a day to race. Wish we had this kind of SV racing over here...
it was a pretty good weekend, except for the rain on Saturday. Sunday was perfect weather, the track was good, and the SV's made a good showing. Hell, they were everywhere!
It was awesome to have the WSMC regulars come out to play, too bad Kurt's SV left his balls in his purse on his kitchen counter while Tom and Shandra took all the glory running well in the first-ever clubman races! ;) Congrats on the good showings in the expert races too.
Talk about intimidation, both Shandra and Tom were gridded back in the 55-60th grid positions, which is 13 or so rows back in a single wave start. You just can't imagine that feeling unless you have been there, taking the flag and and trying to push your way through turn one with 65 other idiots who are just as insane. Great job, thrown to the wolves and came back smiling. The results speak for themselves, Tom just missed wood in his first AFM race and Shandra dropped what, 15 second off her best?
http://www.unofficial-afm.com/results-2006.html
Thanks to Kurt and Sandie for coming out to watch and help in the pits. Nice meeting you Sandie, cool chick and now I have a face to the name. Kurt's SV, yea, ok, he is pretty cool too.. ;)
If you guys are ever bored on a race weekend I encourage you to come out to either a WSMC or AFM race day, it's $10 to get in the gate but it is all day of good people, good racing and pretty cool equipment.

unofficial time for tigert was a 1:47.9
i think that's a new record isn't it? IIRC rapp on a 750 was doing 48's and that was last yr's record
i saw josh hayes testing his new erion FX machine @ the friday practice before the final AFM round of 05 and and was "only" cutting 54's according to my stopwatch.
congrats to ev. for those podiums. i didn't have high hopes for him to start racing, esp. considering his previous record for binning it @ trackdays. but he's really come into his own. that bitchass.
see you guys @ sears.

Steve Rapp did a 1:47 something on a 750 last year. Tigert did a 1:46.6 at the end of the year on a 1000 and Josh Hayes dropped into 1:47s on his Erion Honda.

It was a hell of a round. 40 SV's took the grid in the 650 twins race (actually, 39 SV's and one Kawi) and over 50 bike were in the Formula IV race. The hard racing was all over the place, with great battles from the beginning to the end.

Tue 5/2/06, 12:29PM
Zoran's pretty sure that a rod snapped. They seem to be the weak point of this engine.
!st gen cases will work in a pinch and I have a line on some of them; but, they're different enough that I would like to avoid that.
I wish I were aggressive enough with the throttle to be breaking stuff. :p
You got the shirt, right? ;)
I've got the shirt and sticker package. It's not working yet. http://forums.thetechzone.com/images/smilies/069.gif

It's well worth it. After doing my first few races at WSMC, I was floored by the AFM.
The AFM is run differenctly, though, so you have to get used to a different set of procedures. Not necessarilly better or worse, just different.

Anyone want to start a pool to see how many race wins Spencer gets in a row, or even going undefeated in 2006? (He hasn't lost in the 4 WSMC races he's entered this year, either.)

Fri 6/2/06, 4:22PM
So the guy I bought my SV from raced his R6 with AFM last weekend. He said
"Three of my four races were red flagged due to crashes and they carted people off in ambulances in each of them. The entire weekend was crazy like that. 500+ racers. 77 crashes. 7 ambulance rides."
That's a lot of crashing and ambulance rides!
Holy cow! If you think about it though, only 1 in 11 crashes warranting an ambulance is pretty good. Too bad for the riders. :(

it's like a tradition
I think it was about 80 crashes total that weekend.

Of course the fist person through is Spencer, followed by the masses. I hope to be more toward the front of that gaggle next year.

I see on RRW that Spencer took 3rd in 650 twins on a Kawidog. With him being so far out in the points I guess it's worth taking a shot at the Kawi money.
I actually thought Pariott would win the F4 race, but Spencer ran away with the win on a proper 650 twin. Goes to show you . . . . well, nothing really. That Kawi he was on probably could use some more work/practice time.

Well that was quite the experience. That back straight was pretty fun. You're all tucked in in 6th gear for a long time. You go over that hump in the middle of the straight then set up for a fast 5th gear sweeper. That was all about hauling ass and would make or break your lap times.
Starting from the back row of a 28 rider grid was rather daunting. The dash for turn 1 had me weaving all over the place for position (safely :) ). Passing people was . . . different. Not near as much room as at WSIR. I, apparently, got up to 10th place by the 4th lap. Kevin, the superstar new guy (who's last name I never caught) was pulling away from me now that we were free and clear, so I knew I was on my own for the rest of the race.
I was really, really tired. I haven't slept well in a week and I was feeling it. I had no endurance and was wishing the race would just be over. 5 seconds later, for me, it was. Entered that super tight "off ramp" (turn 2 clockwise) turn poorly, ran wide onto the painted curbing and lost the front. Never crashed going that slow before. Doesn't hurt, which is nice. Bike doesn't get too banged up, either, even though it flipped.
While up until I hit the wall, and then the ground, it was pretty fun, but I think I'm done racing for the year. I need to save up money so I can take a school and be taught how to ride. If I still do AFM next year I know I'll learn a lot riding with all those fast guys, but I need some coaching to help me learn to get to that next level of riding like the yellow bikes do.

Mon 10/23/06, 9:04AM
Excellent.
Man, you've gotten your money's worth out of frame sliders, my friend; but that's why we've gotta call you champion from here on out. Not coming to WSMC any more this year?
Kurt'sSV
Mon 10/23/06, 9:21AM
Yeah, I'm done with WSMC for a while. When I feel like racing again, it'll be at other tracks. But right now I feel like I should expand my interests a little and take a bit of a break. My major sponsor (Visa) agrees.
p.s. - I hope Kurt Spencer's leg is okay. He got side swiped really hard in the 2nd race. They didn't crash, but it close.
p.p.s - Congrats to Jay Avansino for his first AFM win yesterday!
Kevin Heiss. If he wasn't such a cool guy I would hate him for having all that talent. I don't know what they put in the water in Reno but I want some of that good stuff!!!
By the way, 5 seconds separated the top 10 riders in FIV, and only 3 in 650T! Talk about competitive. I can't believe they let me on the grid :o, but I'm glad that they do. :D Thanks to Spencer and Zman for wrenching on my bike in the hot sun on Saturday, or else my first and second finish (from the back) on Sunday wouldn't have been possible. lol

Mon 10/23/06, 9:44AM
there were a few wsmc'ers there: richard barnett, herb alpert, eric angel, tony lanzara (watching, not racing), as well as a few wera peeps.
eric angel did really well in the 450 classes-i think he got a 2nd & a 3rd, but i 'm not sure about his 3rd race.
tom shao kept it up & on the track for 650 twins & f4 & was going pretty fast & finished well. and even though mr kurt did crash, he was in 10th or 11th & running 2:05's-which on b-willow configuration wwe were running is really d*mn fast.
( the other thing with afm- in the sv class you can't slip a playing card between 2nd-12th place...it's as big as a 600 novice class at wsmc)
the twf guys did really well too: dr john got a 3rd in 500 twins and 3rd in class also. joe got a 2nd and 2nd in class. jay won 650 twins & also got a 2nd in class championship. tom dorsey took 3rd in f4 & also placed in a class championship. aaron & ducky took 4th & 5th & 5th & 6th in 650 twins & f4, respectively.
kurt spencer got highest points in club & gets the #6 plate enxt year :D and finished 2nd in f4 w/no shifter! he got hit by hagan in his shifting foot & finished the last 3 laps of the race with no shift lever & only using 5 & 6th gear. (that's some serious ridin')
i kept touching the yellow bikes when i went by them to see if any speed rubbed off & it did :D
i got 9th in ltwt clubman.
Sounds like I missed some fun racing this weekend. Congrats on your first AFM race weekend Kurt W. If you think sitting behind 28 bikes is daunting, come out the the first Sears race next year...you'll be so far back you'll have to squint to see the flag tower. ;) Sorry about your crash, that's a bummer. You were riding well up until that point it sounds like.
The best part about racing in AFM is that it doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, there's always someone to play with. Some of my funnest races had me finishing an eternity away from the lead pack.
And Shandra, you and I still have a date to 'bang elbows'. ;)
Cheers,

Are you going to have to buy another helmet? if you keep up the pace of crashing every other month ask for a discount if you buy a half dozen. That should last you for the next racing season.

It's called rotational force. My seat flew off and then there was nothing holding the battery down, so it and the rectifier got ejected. Yeah, the terminals broke off so we'll (meaning Tom :) ) have to get those reattached.
I didn't realize my helmet touched the ground until I saw that picture. I guess I should check to see if the paint is scratched, but I don't think it is. I fell over really slowly. I don't even feel any soreness today.

Stupid internet and it's lack of inference.
The attack on his bike was tongue-in-cheek... I didn't have any thing else to attack him on...so I made a silly and obviously unrelated comment that I thought was obviously sarcastic... not so much.
However... I do think that people should keep comments like that to themselves. What's the point? Make you feel better about your sense of style? If annouced to the board..."Eeeek's paintjob on his bike is stupid....I can't believe that anybody would paint their bike like that.".... wouldn't that qualify as a little douchy?
It's not at all that somebody is a douchebag because they have a different opinion... I happen to agree with the guy about Kurt's boots :D

4 little mishaps out of 25 days of riding this year isn't that bad. Besides, one of them was from blowing the turn at Infineon, and if there was more runoff I would have kept it upright*, so it should be 3.5 wrecks out of 25 days. :D

Finished my first AFM races this weekend. It was pretty fun. Starting from the back of a big grid racing on a narrow track is a lot different than starting at the front of the grid on a wide track. We’d be going so slow through turns 1 and 2 at the start that I was getting pissed. I wish my bike still had a horn on it because I’d have been beeping it at people and yelling Go! Go! The first lap of the FIV race (think 550 Superbike) was hairball. Other than that it was pretty smooth. Fun, too, but very different than racing big Willow. My hand got tired from reaching for the clutch to make down shifts.

Well... how well did you represent us then? Mid-pack finish? how far off were your lap times from the front runners? Inquiring people want to know.....
Congrats on your first official AFM finish Kurt. Traffic at BW get's a little blocked up at the start when your starting from the back. The first few rows get through T2 a lot faster, but if you're boxed in it can be a little frustrating. No worries though, you'll be playing up front in no time. ;)

Yup! Mediocre results for me. :groove: It looks like I finished 15th in FIV and 17th in 650T after starting back on grid spots in the 30's. I just cracked into the 2:01's for lap times. That's not impressive, but it's honestly faster than I thought I would go. I've never been comfortable with really pushing at Buttonwillow because of the narrowness of the track, the scary/dangerous gigantic curbings, and condition of the pavement (bumpy and not very abrasive). If BW had less braking zones and more right handers, I'd be way faster there. ;)
For reference, Kurt Spencer did a 1:54 there in 2005. Jay and some other Twin Works guys and other front runners did 1:57's yesterday. Jeff Hagan kicked everyone's ass with a 1:55's.
Looking forward to Sears Point!

Yeah, because I haven't learned any racecraft at Willow in 3 years.
I kind of think you AFM SV'ers make too much about the number of people who line up to race on the grid. Like more = better instead of quality over quantity. For FIV at Sears it looks like I'll be gridded around 15th. How is having 30 more people gridded behind me going to teach me anything? I won't be racing with them, I'll be racing with, like, 6 or 7 people gridded around me. Racing new tracks will teach me new racecraft. Having 60 people launch into turn one at the same time is just dangerous. Not much to learn beyond that.
I know you guys don't like to think this, but if you AFM SV guys game down and did a race or two at Willow, you'll learn some racecraft there, too.

Good luck this weekend Kurt. The first race at BW is always fun, but the first race of the year at Sears (Infineon) has a completely different feel...in a good way of course. Everyone is jacked up just a little bit more.
If you'd care for some practice advice, get to the front of the group heading out for your practice session. This is the best way to ensure at least a few clean laps. Otherwise it's traffic city. With so many SV's out there you're sure to find plenty in your practice session to dice with.

Yeah, I ran out of talent on the brakes going into turn nine in a desperate attempt to stay ahead of Ducky. Nothing on the bike even broke in the crash. The only really shitty thing about the crash is that my helmet got scuffed as I rolled through the dirt. It looked sooooo awesome with the job Shandra and Speights did on it.
