The 11th annual nationwide "Ride to Work Day" will take place on Wednesday, July 17th. Several million motorcyclists are expected to commute on their bikes to help demonstrate:

A) That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life.
B) That motorcyclists can reduce traffic congestion in large cities.
C) That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation.
D) That motorcycling is a social good.

This year's event has been endorsed by many rider organizations including the American Motorcyclist Association, the Motorcycle Rider's Federation, Harley Davidson owner clubs, BMW owner clubs, Honda owner clubs, etc...and also has been recognized and supported by special interest publications like Cycle World, Motorcycle Consumer News, and others.

"Today there are over two hundred and twenty million cars and light trucks crowding our roads. If more motorcycles become a regular part of the transportation mix, it will make urban parking easier and traffic will flow better. Only a small percentage of the six million registered bikes are currently being used for utility and commuting purposes. Motorcycles are efficient, clean, save energy and reduce infrastructure wear. Riders usually arrive at their destinations more invigorated and refreshed than is possible with other modes of travel. In advanced countries like Japan, Germany, and England, motorcycling for transportation is widely appreciated as a social good. Motorcycles may seem excessively risky but actually they are statistically similar to all automobiles...on an injury per mile basis...when behavioral and sociological risk factors are accounted for. Being fully seen by other road users, as riders are, is non-threatening and helps reduce road rage incidents. Riding is good for everyone." says Andy Goldfine, organizer of Ride to Work Day.

On the annual Ride to Work Day, transportation riders seek:
- Increased employer recognition and support
- Affirmative action private and municipal parking policies
- Affirmative action related tax policies
- Health care coverage parity
- Police enforcement and judicial parity
- Road and infrastructure reforms

Please don't make me DRIVE to work...... I HATE driving my truck to work, it takes twice as long for me to get to work in the truck. I used to really like my truck. Now it just sits there all alone, collecting dust in the garage. I don't drive it unless I need to go to the store or haul something.

Go ahead and do it... Unless it's raining, there's nothing to really worry about. They might get a little dusty, but not bad enough to make people think you've not washed them in a month...

Of course, if you go months without washing, it might make a difference ;)

that my pants I wear often while riding are getting sun bleached in the thigh area. To the extent that they look dirty, washed or not. They do look REALLY bad if I wear them a few times in a row with out washing though. That funky road grime gets all over everything......

Hopefully I'll be brave enough to ride to work by next Wednesday. I still haven't taken my bike on the freeway yet, but I'm hopping to get into the carpool lane soon to get used to the speed.

Any tips for me? I'll most liekly be taking the 710 to 105 to 405 to work. I'd rather do this than take the 10 to the 405, because the 105 has that nice wide carpool lane.

Wish me luck!

Biggest tip for the freeway...wear earplugs! A quiet helmet will help keep you focused and calm...a noise one can be bewildering and overwhelming!!

Also, if you get freaked out like I did, you will tend to have a deathgrip on the bars...resist that and keep a loose grip. Try to keep your speed up...it's more scary to be going slower than traffic when you are on a bike. Avoid people's blindspots, especially on larger vehicles like SUV's and semi's. Watch out for those semi's on the 710!!

Good luck! I'm still not 100% comfortable on the freeway, but it's getting easier every time!! Let us know how it goes!
