Can I put...
The engine from an SV1000S,
or a TL1000R,
or a TL1000S,
into a 1st-gen 650?

have you considered shoehorning in a J-Spec SV400 motor!? Oh yeah! The first J-spev SV in America!! That'd be ricerific!!

I'm all for the SV400. I think we don't have enough medium power sport bikes available in this country. There's the Ninja 250 and 500, the GS, and just about nothing else in the 30-50 hp range. And they're ancient.
The SV650 and Ninja 650R are both putting down around 70. Other detuned 600 bikes are around 90 and new 600 bikes are well over 100.
That said, I want more power (arf arf). And I want to keep my bike nerdy. Any idiot (every idiot?) can go out and buy a GSXR1000.
The only reason I can think of to swap in the smaller engine is to qualify the bike for some smaller displacement racing class.

Sure you can, if you replace the frame with one from an SV1000S :P
The TLR/TLS motor sadly is not a straight bolt in to the SVS or I'd seriouosly consider picking one up :)

Twf posted 1-2 years ago saying that he had tried, and it didn't fit.
Have you checked into changing the cams, then maybe getting different carbs? That'd get you more horses, though nowhere near a 1000 engine.

Just man up and get the 1k! That's what I did. Best move ever, better supension and 109hp at the rear wheel.

... and if you fit the Yoshi 2 into 1 full system everyone will think they just got passed like they were standing still by a 650 :)

That would be me with no stickers so you have to look real hard and pay atension to detail.

How about 2nd gen to 1st gen and vice versa?

The TL-S does have that gorgeous trellis style frame, I say you just buy one of those.

i changed cams , big bore , and jetted pretty heavily and i am shooting out about 106 out of my 1st gen sv....you can pic a big bore kit up for about 900 bucks and the cams both intake and exhaust for about 600 ..many places offer big bore kits for these lil guys.

I have heard of people putting bussa pistons cause aparently they are the same as SV?? but a lot lighter??
I really don't know much about it and searched this forum but what kind of HP gains can one expect or are the benefits in a smoother engine?
by just putting pistons you will not get noticable power gain, you need to set it up different to get benefits.however lighter is better and only that is improvement.

I've always thought the old CBX motor was pretty cool.
make that 6 in to 1 and it will screem :)

Lot of good reasons for lighter engine parts... less inertia in the engine lets it rev faster, the crank and piston rods see less stress. But it won't pump more air so it won't make more power.

But arent the busa pistons higher compression?

how big is your pocket..if oyu can replace all the engine internals with lighter parts (or lighten them yourself via drill press hehe) you can make a lot less weight to put into motion and the SV will rev higher, be lighter and have a bit more ponies. then replace everything you can with lighter parts...the bike may not have alot more HP but it will be light enough for it to move quicker
