This is just an idea, but I liked Marcks route, and the start point is a little more accesible for Lost Angels...(peeps of LA)
The route would be, Sant Paula(start) up the 150 through Ojai, up the 33 to Cerro Noreste to Lockwood Valley, to the 33 to Ojai for PIZZA!!!!!
Whatd'y'all think?! Are we recovered enough for another mileage ride? Fewer stops. No Lake Hughes bumps. All the fun twisties with 90% less sand! Lemme know what you's think.
W
So, by unusual demand: RULES TO RIDE BY!!!
1) Ride The Pace
I think The Pace, is a reasonable a good way to keep riders together on these ride. Some of us like to have a rider in view in front of themselves on unknown roads. What The Pace entails, is this. The turns is where we seek our rush, but there is no need to rush from turn to turn; so, enjoy the road, enjoy the view, and do it all at 65mph or less. I'm sure the pace will prove a bit faster at the front, but remember, the pace allows slower riders in the group, the chance to play catch up, so the we aren't too split up. Also, it allows faster riders to pass. For not all out faster riders are on bikes that can match ours for sheer acceleration, and I don't want a passing maneuver to be a drad race.
2) Signal to Pass
If you find yourself behind a slower rider, as soon as it is safe to do so, give two blasts of the horn, so that they know to let you by. To the rider being passed; if you hear the horn, pull aside and share your lane so that those who wish to pass can do so safely. It's not a bad idea to check your rearview as you leave a turn. This is when I do. Concentrate on the turn, all the way through, then if you wish, check you mirror once safe. DO NOT slow down to be passed unless you are certain the rider behind you wishes to pass you, as it is pretty disconcerting to have the rider you are following slow down in the twistys for no apparent reason, when you are in your groove.
3) Report
If you are endangered, or offended by another rider, please report it to the ride leader, so that the problem can be resolved, and if there is a lesson to be learned, it can be learned on the move.
THAT DATE IS SUNDAY THE 18TH!!

80% up for going at the moment.
I should have just ridden through the rain this past Saturday. The bike was just as filthy by the time I got back anyway. :(
Put me down for sweep in the fast group, lead and sweep in the intermediate and lead in the slow if you need volunteers.

Mon 5/29/06, 12:01PM
I'll pick up the group at the Chevron in Ojai (intersection of 150 and Montgomery Street). What will be your departure time?
Also, I'd suggest:
1. Planning a stop at the Flying J for gas/restrooms;
2. Stops at Wolf's (the last rest stop:going out and coming back); to regroup and share smiles; &
3. If there's a large group, consider breaking it into subgroups of 8-12 and sending them off at 3 minute intervals.

90% at this point. Sounds like a good time to me. I'll have to "clear" it with the authorities however...

Smokescreen, could you schedule a departure from Santa Paula at 9:30??
If so, I'll be breakfasting (is that a gerund?) in Ojai at the Cafe Emporium (108 Montgomery Street, about 150 yards from the Chevron in Ojai). Anyone interested in joining for breakfast should show up around 8:30am-ish. Cheers.

I'd probably be up for it. Since I have Streets and Trips open, how's this?
Rode 33 North to 166 today. They are resurfacing part of the 33 North of Lockwood Valley. Wasn't too bad, some gravel, no painted center divider, one short stretch of pure gravel. Signed at 35mph, but in the condition it was in, you could go a little faster very safely (+20 )
I wonder if the conditions would get better or worse as the date approaches?

You guys we could skip Lockwood Valley and I wouldn't cry..but that's just me. Cerro is the hot ticket....such an amazing piece of road.
Meeting places...any gas station (other than Arco) will do great (stupid Arco doesn't take credit cards, just debit). You know, I'm not very picky with coffee but others might be enthusiastic about a good morning cup o' Joe. I tend toward energy or sports drinks myself (when riding).
Either way, I do think it's good to meet at gas stations...otherwise someone invariably shows up without a full tank and then there are now two stops and potential confusion. It can get messy with a group bigger than 2 or 3 people. :D

I would agree with Lockwood Valley, except we want to get back to Ojai for lunch. Doubling back on Cerro would be cool except for the long straight on the 33 (once is enough!). I guess your R1 can cover the 20+ miles in 5 minutes, but it takes longer for us mortals.
I like to fill up in Ojai so that I leave for the boonies with an absolutely full tank.
I think there is a Chevron as you get off the 126 (at 150/10th St).

No, This is not a gerund. You are using "breakfast" as a verb.
We didn't get to meet on Saturday's ride, but I know who you are. I was impressed with your riding of the Buell! Especially after what you and Mojave Mike (I was sitting next to him at lunch) were saying about how it is difficult to handle. Gas is a huge consideration on this loop, which I've done twice in the last two weekends. North of Ojai there's only gas in two areas on the route:
1. There's a market/gas station less than 1 mile east of the Lockwood / Cuddy Valley intersection (that's point #5 on slowpoke's map), or head east a little further to the 5 freeway.
2. This place on the 33, about halfway up that stretch between Lockwood and the 166:
http://www.startriding.com/images/sclr/052006/gaspump2.jpg
Notice how old the pump is... :p and they only have 87 octane.
If you think you can make it from Ojai to the 166 to Cerro Noroeste and all the way over to spot #1 I mentioned above, you're golden. Can someone calculate the mileage?

Acer, the lawn reservation info is on page 16 of the "North Country (Castaic/Lake Hughes) 5-27-Y6" thread. It's available through prepayment of meals, and there didn't seem to be much response from the group given the pricing structure.

You are right about that and I wish I hadn't asked Will to change the date in the first place. I guess it is just the luck of the draw as to who can make it on any given ride. You can't please all of the people all of the time and someone is always going to miss out because of prior commitments.

Rode Ojai/Hwy 33 to Cerro Noroeste to Frazier Park. Gassed up, and took Lockwood Valley back to 33/Ojai.
For the gas-tank-challenged, note that I clocked the distance from the Chevron in the center of Ojai to the Texaco out in Pine Mountain Club to be 90 miles. A couple of miles less if you gas up at the Union 76 in Ojai which is a bit closer to the base of the 33 hillclimb. Frazier Park is another 10 miles past the Texaco. From Frazier Park to Ojai, it’s 65-70 miles.
For the high-speed-explorers, there are two or three long straights with adequate visibility (for safety and to detect CHPs and other vehicles) where you can test your high end powerbands. (It seems that my FZ-1 is capable of at least 130… who’da guessed.)
Most of the straight-ish stretch between the Hwy 33 twisty section/Lockwood Valley and Hwy 166 to the north has been repaved. It’s like Butter! Still road work going on during the week it seems, but totally devoid of traffic and workers today (Sunday).
Recommendation: Folks gas up at the Texaco because there are probably restrooms there. Whereas at “Midway Gas” in Frazier Park, there are none. And it’s not alotta fun riding out to the Flying J at Hwy 5.
My first ride on Cerro Noroeste. Nothing technical, just long sweepers/curves. Beautiful scenery of the valleys below to the north and south. A couple of rising turns with great views can catch you off guard. If so, enjoy the flight because there’s no guardrail and it’s a lonnnnng way down. On a sad note, as Don (V-Strom 650) and I approached the Cerro Noroeste/Mil Potrero Hwy intersection from the West, there were flagmen, forestry staff and a couple of CHPies. On the side of the road: one cruiser in a ditch, two cruisers on sidestands, two riders leaning on each other, and a white sheet covering someone on the ground. No other details. Odd because it was in a straight section. Perhaps an animal crossed the path or riders got tangled up.
As for OUR group ride on the 18th, I’d recommend bypassing the Frazier Park stop. Just gas up in Pine Mountain Club (a nice looking community), and take Lockwood Valley back to Ojai. Even the supermotos should have enough gas for that route.

If I take off my stuff, I can sell it... Then buy the wheel and some nice rotors..

It's summertime, prime riding weather, which is why I'm starting my suspension and brake upgrades tonight, too!!!

The Texaco in Pine Mountain Club no longer sells gas, they haven't since last fall. "Midway Gas" is the closest station to Lockwood Valley Rd. to get fuel.

Heck yeah, Will, I agree with JV and Burke on this one, get all the parts and keep riding, then use your SV take-offs to pay yourself back.
Seems foolish to have the bike out of commission for any longer than a few days for this swap.
Ooh, and good choice on bits, that's exactly the combo I 'd put on if I get another SV. You gettin' a new shock for the full effect? Ohlins makes nice shocks. Ha.
And I probably won't be on this ride, the last 250 miler was a bit long on the SM bike... though I could be convinced...
If you need any help with the swap, I'm only minutes away and happy to help. And I have a few tools, too.

Incidentally, I think this will make the bike heavier. The GSXR1K rear is on already, and I just want full adjustability in the front. The Tokico's are block and "look" identical to my twin pistons. The only give away will be the clipons and the axle diameter. And if the sold parts do well enough, some galfer rotors.

By the way, on your usual big ass groups, this gas station is probably too small to meet at. I think this would be the ideal gas station of future rides as it is huge. It used to have a nice coffee shop, but I think it closed. :( So, you'll have to get coffee in the gas station or Bob's Big Boy Express.

No No, everyone else is planning to meet at the Chevron and that should be fine 'cause it's a smaller group. But you'll see it is kinda small (and your groups tend to be large) so I was just giving you an alternative for you to keep in mind. Your rides bring everyone out, and I just think the 76 on the 126 will be a whole lot easier with the big groups. Your original meeting point is just fine for this weekend.

Too bad we hit traffic on the way home - usually South Mountain is not trafficed at all. I was also trying to time it so we could get a clean shot up the 23, but I couldn't give those boats enough of a head start!

Thanks to everybody for showing up for a great ride. Today was mostly a rather experienced croud, so I was at the back a lot. April's track day clearly is paying off, as I battled to ever keep up with her. Julia was smokin as usual, and the rest of the riders, I only ever saw when they stopped to wait for us.
April- Thanks a million for saving Julia and I from ourselves this morning. Without you there'd have been no ride for us.
Julia- Was a SQUID today!!! She wore jeans on the ride!! HAHA!! She took her time for safety, which means I couldn't keep up with her.
Probably my favorite part of the ride was the first mile of the 150 out of Ojai. I guess I'm just a sucker for the technical stuff. Cerro Noreste was not all it was cracked up to be for me. On the first bit, the road was very odd, to the point that I stopped to make sure my tyres weren't flat. And of course there was the sweepers.... Just more proof I like technical roads. The fact is, that I SUCK at left hand sweepers. They are my worst turn. BUT.... By the end of the day, I was feeling a little better about the let hand sweepers.
Anyhow, again, thanks all!

well that was fun! so much fun that as soon as we got home i passed out on the couch... man was i wiped out! so needless to say, didn't get a chance yet to get pictures off the camera. though to be honest i only got a few. didn't get the chance to sneak ahead of the group to get any action shots, and the group kept losing people right and left, so no group picture... but i have a couple of pics.
A HUGE thanks goes to April for saving my sorry ass. Bit of a misunderstanding led to my leathers not making it into the truck (perhaps this will be the last time we truck the bikes to the start point.) April was kind enough to loan me a jacket and some jeans (luckily i had my boots and helmet) and i was set! Not to mention she offered us a safe spot to park the truck. We owe you lunch next time April! Woulda' covered your lunch yesterday, but as it was we barely had enough cash for our own meal. (Who doesn't accept cards these days? It's the 21st century people!) Oops...
On that note, thanks to Marck for covering our tip and tax (and perhaps a few bucks of the meal? don't know how we split it up.) You're awesome! (Didn't think strawberry shortcake would be $8. But it was so damn good!) See ya soon.
Had a great time with everyone yesterday. Good group of riders and good people to boot. Good thing I cut out when I did, who'd have thought to wear sunscreen on the back of your neck. The only exposed spot on my body and it's fried. 2 more hours and I would have been cooked! Glad everyone else made it back OK.

I think it will be a while before I schedule another ride of that magnitude. I very much liked using the truck, but we will definately have a load plan next time. In the mean time, I've got my bike to disassemble, that MSF thingy to do, and hopefully some Azusa action in there somewhere. I absolutely LOVE the Azusa stuff.
I'm not sure I would strongly consider adding Cerro Noreste to our route again... But that's just me. I'm sorta in for twistier stuff than that. Sort of a lot of straight stuff for a few extra sweepers (at which I suck) but it seemed to be a favorite amongst some of the other riders. So you never know.
I think I'll either give less notice on future rides, or set them for an earlier departure time than 0800HRS. Maybe 0730HRS, just to sorta thin out the pickins. I rather enjoyed this group's mentality... I guess what I'm saying is, I still want new riders to feel welcome, but I want whomever comes to ride, to really be dedicated to going.
Now Marcia, I definately still want you on the rides, so will you require a wakeup call? I'm told you have trouble with the morning hours.

I learned the hard way a long time ago - sunscreen on the back of the neck, front of the neck (on very long days, the reflections will take it's toll) and the face that's not covered by your helmet - especially my nose and cheeks!

The beginning of Cerro really caught me off guard. I had to pull over and check my tyres. It made me really nervous. Otherwise, I suppose it helped me to develope a skill at which I suck, and that's good. But it wasn't, for me, worth the ultra long straight riding at the pace.

They are the etymotics plugs and I also have the ER6i headphones. Love those. They work great for an ipod or mp3 player. Total sound isolation, no wind noise at all hardly. Do a google search for them and you can check them out. I got mine from Amazon.com for a lot less than the etymotics web site.

Thanks Will and Julia!
I had a lot of fun! And yeah, I like the smaller groups better as well. That was actually my motivation on scheming a way to free up my time to make the ride with ya!! That and it started in Santa Paula.
Sorry I could not be a hostess for you two. Normally I woulda had the house clean, a bed clean, the jacuzzi going, bar b que, drinks (you getting the picture?). Seriously my b/f and I are usually quite the hosts, we've just been so darn busy and Sunday I had to split to get work done. Hopefully by the end of the summer we will be caught up and the house back to normal. I'll invite ya over then.
Back to the ride, it was a blast! I started off pretty freaking slow! You guys were no where to be seen and at the first stop after Ojai, I thought, "Well, this is gonna be a long day. Maybe I should just go home." I sucked in my pride and Julia was kind enough to hang back and let me follow her. It really helped me get my mind on track and relax and get into a nice groove. And I wanna know did you all conspire to ride behind me on the way back? Talk about making a newbie nervous! That was the most relaxed and fairly fast (for me) I have ever been on the street with no one leading me. Not to pat myself on the back, but I was actually kinda proud of myself. :o And Will, I must of been riding harder than you on the straights 'cause I seriously doubt I was losing you on the turns! You two would have alot of fun at a track. Julia, I'll sponsor ya, but Will, you're on your own!! :D
Guess how many bites I have on my arm. 5! And they itch like crazy. That'll teach me to wear my gloves inside the jacket to let some air through. It let the bugs through too!
Yeah, once you forget something, it is pretty much guarantied you will never forget that again! No worries providing you with clothes. You're just lucky we are close to the same size! And I think you still have my jacket liner. If you do, don't worry about it; I'll grab it next time we get together.
Good Times! Was not expecting the ride to be that long. That night I was hoping I would not be sore as hell the next day for my  4th trackday. Gotta get the seat time in to improve the skills!! ;)
Oh, and I am trying to match faces with names and screen names. It takes me awhile to learn everyone's name, but I'll get there. Who was kind enough to sweep behind me?? I just wanted to say thank you and burn your name into my memory bank!! :)

If you are talking about the British Gentleman on the Moto-Guzzi, that's John. He's not on the boards that I know of, but he regularly rides those hills and he is a great friend of ours. His sweeping is decieving, because he's a group one rider when he wants to be. But in the grand scheme of things, he just loves to ride, so he's happy anywhere in line.

Silly peeps! Did no one learn from my horrid spider bite incident?? :p
April, no worries about the hosting thing... we were just so grateful for the generousity you did show us. Thank you again so much.
I'm glad I was able to help you get focused. I knew you'd gone faster on previous rides, so I didn't want you to be left behind if you were having an off day. I know how those are! John was the guy on the red Moto Guzzi with the denim Icon jacket and white flip-face helmet. He's basically my moto-mentor. My first motorcycle ride was on the back of his V-strom, and I learned riding on my own on our group rides by following his and Marck's lead... and trying desperately to keep up! He's a great guy, and seemed to want to make sure you weren't separated from the group.
Oy ve! I still haven't posted my whopping 4 pictures. I really wish I'd crept ahead of the group to get passing shots, but... next time! There's always next time!
Ok, here they are:

Man!! Those pictures are the bomb diggity!! The BOMB DIGGITY!!
:( Everybody likes Julia more than me.... Is it caus she's hotter than me, or caus she's a better rider? Or is it that "easy to catch a somethingrather with honey than excrement" thing?

I hope you got a few shots of the truck with TWO bikes in the bed for MT... I can picture it now; bright red truck with blue and yellow bikes in the back, the primary colors! I never saw the truck in question, so it's only a guess, but we have to get bikes into that book whenever possible, even if they're not being ridden.
Wish I coulda made it out for the ride, sounds fun. I woulda' cleaned your helmet for you, Dan...
Next time, always a next time.

I noticed a guy breaking the lock on a bike he was stealing at a local parking garage... So while he was busy trying to break the lock, I stole the ramp at the back of his truck!! J/K
Borrowed it from Robert. It's pretty short. I think it's for his trailer. But with a nice inclie, it worked great!
