Here's a quote I found on the main boards (ram air thread):

I emailed Dale Walker a long time back about the foam, he said don't take it out. I guess he would know. As for the glue, I don't really know.

I know that some of the original mod specs have changed...so is the tank foam removal mod "out" now? Nat, is it possible to put get new foam and put it back?

Did he say why not? My cycle was dying with the foam in place.

The Story so far: NateDawg recently removed his tank foam and has suffered from REDUCED performance on his rejetted, shimmed and Yosh'd bike. Still a mystery...

I'm just speculating, but I'm pretty sure the foam's only purpose is to quiet the intake. My only other wild guess was to insulate the tank from engine heat, but I can't believe that. JMO

This is a great site. I hope after we gather a critical mass of members we can arrange a big SV ride to Willow Springs via the Crest. :)

I think the purpose of the foam was to restrict airflow, possibly acting as a secondary filter.

I believe the foam is there for noise regulations (EPA shit).

Either way, my SV still doesn't run as well as she used to.

Too much air I guess. Had to remove the K&N & throw the original air filter back in to choke her a bit. Better, but still not up to par. Added bigger main jets. Still not like it should be.

I'm thinking about ditching the bike and taking up power walking instead.........

Is it relevant to remove the foam on a '03 SVS ? Will I get any performance boost from installing a K&N filter but still use the stock exhaust ? (I will invest in a slip-on when my finances get better :) )

Oh my God! What have i done?! I didn't read carefully this forum and i 've removed this foam from tank in my '00 SVS. What have i noticed?
1 intake system is a little louder than previously.
2 max speed is reduced some 15-20 km/h

hmmm i see that i must find and replace this foam asap...

another mystic thing in SV should be better and is worse

i can only suspect that now flowing air over airbox inlet is moving so fast that works like a Ventouri jet and is sucking air from airbox (like air moving thru carburator is sucking fuel thru fuel jet).
