"Damn it's hot out here.... Thank God this beer is soooooo cold!"
I was thinking the same thing, it's gonna be freaking hot! But it beats leaving my house at 5:45 to get to Irvine by 7:45. Which means getting up at 5. ON A SATURDAY! Not if I have a choice! :) Sunscreen and water, but no cooler to keep it cold! :(
Besides, you're on a no beer diet!!!

Jim-
Sounds like the Experienced course would be ideal for you. You've got more than eight solid street months and a track day... perfect.
We won't be doing anything crazy on the course, it just covers more advanced topics like lane position, more defensive traffic riding, evasive maneuvers and things like that. Though it would be fun to slide around and do wheelies and stoppies, those tricks would be frowned upon by the MSF.
And besides, it's FREE! Go for it.

Cool, I got Maria to go with me. Just signed her up for Saturday afternoon. She said her bike is pretty ghetto (taped and then spray painted - doh) and she should have new mirrors by then. She said she's gonna order them today from the dealer. Hope her shoulder feels better by then too, cause it's gonna be a long day of riding! (2 hours there, class, 2 hours back). :)
she won't have the only taped-up bike in that group ;)

No stupid questions here... okay, occasionally I read a stupid question, but THIS one isn't...
I've been riding for a while now and consider myself a pretty decent rider (I used to be better when I was in my 20's...) but there's always room for improvement. You never know when someone will give you a piece of advice that will really click and make things easier, safer or more fun. So I'm going to get a bit of class time, listen to instructors that teach a LOT of people and to get some time doing drills that I usually don't do on my own. And do it in an environment where everyone is working on improving their skills instead of going faster or showing off.
I'm on a different course at the same time as you, good luck!

The day anyone ceases to learn something new about riding, they should quit. Because that means they've reached a level of ignorant arrogance that could result in someone getting hurt.
Good riders are always learning. They never think they have "mastered" anything. They know there is always room for improvement. Hell, I don't think I'm even an expert at raising the damn kickstand!
So, in taking a course, I'd say it's for all of the reasons you mentioned - wanting to polish skills you already have. Perhaps learn new skills you don't possess.
The motto of the MSF is "the more you know, the better it gets" and I think that is true with all enjoyable activities. So have fun and learn all you can.

I've been riding for nearly 10 years now and I still nearly dropped the thing last night because, and I swear this to God, I couldn't get my left foot off the fucking footpeg! At a complete standstill! Completely stone cold sober!!
Fortunately I've been hitting the gym so I was able to wrench the thing back upright from about a 45 degree angle once I did get my foot down :)

I just took the beginners MSF this past weekend and our instructor brought up the advanced course (even mentioning the freebee this weekend). He told me that it's really good for someone with 1500 miles or more in the saddle...I'm only up to 500 so I plan on taking the course in a year or so.
By the way, if anyone gets Kip as their instructor, you'll love him. The guy's totally cool and a riot to be around. It's a good location too...there's a Cycle Gear a mile away and the new Mission Motorsports showroom right down the street.

although i've never actually taken the ERC, i've seen it. and it looks like (and has been described as) the "BRC on your own bike". its mostly all of the same exercizes, but some of them are adjusted to accomodate larger bikes (namely "the box")...and i believe there's one excercize original to the ERC. it's probably a pretty useful class for anyone who's been riding a bit since passing the BRC (up to people with loads of experience...everyone could benefit from practice anyway!)

Tue 6/13/06, 9:00AM
Well, I am going because I suck at low speed manuevering. Sometimes you'll even see me with my feet hanging out like freaking training wheels 'cause I ain't dropping my bike dammit!! I did that once in the middle of an intersection and I fealt like a dumbass!! Ha Ha. The BF had to get off his bike and pick mine up. Then he said, "Ride it home in first gear!" because the stupid shifter broke.
And as I sit here and think about it, I probably suck at high speed manuevering too! :D
No, not the box!!! I vowed to never do that on my bike! It had better be bigger because if it is the same size, I am gonna have to put training wheels on! Ha. I did the box fine at the BRC, but man was I nervous!
Kyoseki
Tue 6/13/06, 10:42AM
Slow speed manouvreing isn't too tricky.
Set the throttle at 3-4,000 rpm, feather the clutch, hold the bike on the back brake, look over the shoulder in the direction you want to turn, slide your ass across the seat towards the outside of the turn and bingo, super tight turning circle, even on a sportsbike.

Afternoon session was nice. It was overcast and windy which kept it nice and cool!!
Yeah, the class was basically their beginner class on your own bike. Not very exciting, but it is useful. I found out I can't weave for shit. Stupid cones kept getting in the way. :D
One of our coaches did say they are in the works of starting an advanced course which he said was way more advanced than this course, the experienced course.
Anyhow, there were alot of bikes, and alot of cruisers too. By the way, boys should not wear tight pants! There was a lumpy guy in my class wearing some tight ass pants and I was not thrilled about seeing his sausage crammed to one side. :-& What is it with wierdos talking to me??

Yes it would have been much more aggravating if I was also dying of heat... especially with that damn English Goldwinger... man I wanted to strangle that guy.... "speaking of strangling, this one time on my gold wing....[insert shitty english accent , not the cool james bond one]"
Im pretty sure I saw a lot of you out there... Will and your lady (Julie, is it?) were leaving as I arrived. I think i saw Acer on the other range.
Another fun note about the ranges: while it wasnt very hot, some of us on sport bikes starting sinking into the asphalt... the R1 in our group nearly sank 3 inches with that narrow side stand... pretty funny sight actually, just glad it didnt get to the piint where anyones bike fell over.
Oh, and one more note: :). FUCK THE BOX! Supersports were not meant for the box, damnit... A guy dropped his new mint gsx-r 600 twice... the R1 and I said forget it and sat the rest of the Box session out.
Not what I expected, but it did a good job of re-humbling my opinion about my ability, which is important to keep in mind for me so I dont do anything stupid.

I think it was pretty good. They seem to focus a lot on low speed skills. The box and the slow bike race were humbling experiences. They say it transfers to faster speeds, but I don't know.
Everybody was looking at the brand new R6 with the exhaust. The instructor asked the guy if cops ever gave him shit for having an open pipe. The guy said "No, why?" "Oh I thought you hacksawed your exhaust off." "No man, I paid good money for that shit"

Alan, sorry we missed you. Glad nothing happened to any of the SV'ers out there.
P.S. The boss' name is Julia. With an A. She doesn't seem to like it when she's called Julie. Maybe she didn't like a Julie in a former life?

Yeah, after talkiing to Will and Julia about the course this AM on our Azusa ride (thanks Ronnie!) they had the same opinion.
I have to thank the people who wrote in after taking the class to let us know what the real deal is over there. I woulda' been pretty upset to have ridden down from Glendale just to do beginner drills. And probably be "corrected" for my unusual SM riding style.
This is why we participate in the forum; so that we share a collective knowledge base and keep people safe and having fun out there. Rock on.
Ooh, Azusa was great, by the way. We learned a LOT.

Well, I did the class this morning at 8 AM and saw about 5 other SVers out there. It was pretty much just a confidence booster for me to know that MY bike will do all that slow speed stuff as opposed to using a 125cc Rebel like in the basic course. I did see 2 other people out there dump their bikes though. I definitely don't think the pros out weigh the cons in the terms of skills gained vs repair costs. Oh, BTW, there were a bunch of Ducatis out there and I didn't know about their "dry clutch" thing. That noise would bug the shit outta me if I had to listen to that all day! On a brighter note... They gave out free long-sleeve t-shirts afterwards and I think I sweat off about 10 lbs. So it wasn't all bad. :groove:

I couldn't make it due to not getting either bike ready. But after talking to my friends who went and reading these posts, I'm kind of glad I didn't make the trek down.

Thanks for the info Sandie.
It's always nice to revisit slow speed skills (and also very humbling). I now remember that I hate the offset cone weave!
I took the BRC soooo long ago, that the course layout was different. (and they got rid of SIPDE!) I liked the last exercise - 2 different radii turns and the s-weave!
It was pretty much what I expected - riding drills and street survival. Wasn't expecting any secrets to speed - that should come at a track school.
It was so hard to ride without 2 fingers on the brake! A couple of us got reprimanded for that. I see their point in general (more braking power and no chance of accidentally grabbing the brake), but 2 fingers on the SV are enough and I like the reduced reaction time. I've trained myself to not grab the brake by mistake.
Insurace discount, here I come!

Evan when we did the box thing i was thinking about that you said you can do eights i a single parking space with no problems
i discovered how far away i am from doing that :p

Okay, maybe TWO parking spaces, but just look at my bike. It was originally designed to ride around trees and off-road obstacles, then they made it into a streetbike. Unfair slow-speed advantage: Duke2.
I had the thought to trade bikes with whomever was having the hardest time out there, give them a break and give me a challenge. I would have liked to do some of the drills, they'd be good for isolating certain skills we probably use all the time.
But they told you guys not to cover your front brake? Is that ALL the time, or just during a certain exercise? I have two fingers over the front all the time. I would have gotten' into an arguement over things like that. Modern performance bikes only need a 2 finger pull and I personally think the action of "getting to the lever" makes you more likely to **snap** it on in an emergency instead of squeezing.
Just my opinion... like I said, I'd have argued with the coaches on that one.
Glad the course was worthwhile for the majority of our peeps.

I had a lot of fun. Luckily it was a bit cloudy, and the wind kicked up , so it wasn't crazy hot. Good practice.
i missed my class, ah, partied a little hard for 2 days straight, I kinda figured it would be the same stuff as the beginner class. Plus I really didn't wanna drup my bike.
For the box, if you have motosliders, rest your outside knee on them while doing the box, and sit on the side of your bike. i can u-turn great, just gotta trust yourself. If you're gonna fall over, give some gas, you'll pop right up.

Yes, all the time.:(
My attitude was that I was there to learn something, try different things and get out of my comfort zone. So I went ahead and stopped covering the front brake, as they asked. Did not like it at all.
Also, they were trying to help us - for free, so arguing would have been counter productive.
Also from a coaching standpoint, I'm sure that they are watching our hands, so they need to see our fingers move.

I was the black SV1k in the group with all the Ducks, man that was a hot morning, wearing full leathers and sitting on a 200 degree lump of metal for 4 hours sucks :)
As have been said, the drills were pretty basic, I didn't expect to learn anything, but most of the guys I went down there with were pretty green and probably benefitted.
Speaking for myself, the ridercoach told me he'd never seen anyone ride a sportsbike that slowly in the box and was actually quite impressed :)
Mark and Mike were great coaches and are that rarest of breeds, Harley owners who actually ride their damned bikes, one of them had upwards of 92,000 miles on his bike and was dragging the floorboards nicely throughout the entire length of the corners, that was some pretty nice riding.
I saw one guy dump his bike in the group next to us, doing that stupid braking from a corner exercise, still, I guess it's better they do it on in a parking lot than on the street - we were also told that the MSF's insurance would cover any damage to machines on the course, so there is at least one upside to it.
One annoyance though, both the CBR 600s in our group exhausted their batteries and had to be bump started because of the nature of the drills, it might be a good idea to work in some higher speed stuff with the slow speed stuff to stop this from happening.
The usual stuff that bugs me in this course like making sure people don't cover the brake (what's that about) and trying to get people to brake with all 4 fingers was still there, but has been covered by other posters.
... oh yeah, and the one handed cone weave was stupid, we were going so slowly my bike was constantly on the verge of stalling, so I need to cover the damned clutch to make sure I don't dump the thing, they might want to see about speeding that one up a tad.

I did it this morning and I was happy that I went. Basically the same stuff as in the basic, one thing added extra at the end, but on your own bike. I think it is a good idea to do it just as a reminder to have good habits. Though I do have to say that for free I am all for it, but I would never pay for that class.
We had one guy on a Ducati drop his bike as he walked it forward a little:eek: We also had a new Triumph 675 in our group! I love that bike and how it sounds. The guy said that the only bad thing that he could say about it was that it is not the greatest commuter bike due to the handlebar position
I don't know if anybody else's instructors figured this out, but the figure eight box was set up for Basic MSF, for the advanced it is supposed to be bigger(2ft more then the big box or 4ft more then the smaller box) Once he figured this out it sure did help me get through it.
I didn't know that the MSF would cover you if you dropped your bike?!?
Throughout the whole morning I was watching two sheriff's riding their bikes(one training another) in another part of the parking lot. When all was said and done I went over there and talked with them and also tried doing some of their drills. I was able to do their high speed one, but all of their slow speed stuff is too tight for an SV :(

The big box on ours was 28 feet, and the smaller one was 24, so we had the option of going in inside the first set of cones to make our boxes smaller.
What I didn't realise was that the coach had moved the cones at some point so that going inside them made it a 20 foot box and not 24 :)
I still made it though :D

I found all of the low speed drills to be a piece of cake on my Bandit 1200s. The instructor demo-ing the drills on his sv650s put his foot down during the box drill and the offset cone weave. He said it was "impossible" on an sv because of steering lock but I saw a few of other people on this board do it on their bikes so I wasn't too impressed with his riding. This guy in our range was absolutely killing it on his Electra-Glide though. He only needed 2/3 of the box for the figure 8 and was throwing that bike around no problem despite being a wee little man.
All of that said it was barely worth doing and I don't feel the need to advance my parking lot u-turn skills any further considering I've never dropped a bike and I don't see why I would in the future. I guess the next step for me is a track day. Nice free shirt though.

Were you the black 1k with the high mount pipes? Your bike looked good. You should post some pics.
I was in the group with the yellow sv which was dropped. He had motosliders, so I think the bike was fine. A girl on a Ninja 500 also dropped her brand new bike. She said she couldn't turn right, but finally did. Not sure how she was even allowed to do the course.
I think the best thing you can learn from these courses is turning your head while in a turn. It's amazing to see so many riders who don't turn their head and some even look at the ground!

Seems alot of people had trouble with the box. First try at it, I was wide on both U turns. Second time, got the first U turn, going too slow on the 2nd U turn and put the foot down. Third time made both U turns in the box. Most of the riders were not counter weighting in the box. They were trying to lean with the bike and not looking ahead. I was like, were you not listening when they told us how to do the exercise??!! I had a much harder time with the weaving. I did not make it through a single set of off set weaves. I didn't even try it one handed!!
Sandie, I don't remember their names. One was a Jeff and a Mike I think. It was the older gentlemen who did the riding and not the talking!
Acer (Jan?) yep, the guy on the beamer. He was like, wow, you must be really pushing your bike hard to wear the sides of your tire like that. I didn't think you could do that on an sv. When we race cars....blah blah blah. I was like, yeah, whatever dude. It's called heat!

Our instructors were both sport bike riders, and conceded that four finger braking is a bit much on a bike with real brakes, an all but full force stops. Also, they conceded that covering the brakes with one of two fingers seems sensible.
I thought the box and the cones were fairly easy. I only ever messed up on the cones once, and went wide on the small box on my first try. My problem isn't slow speed stuff, it's high speed left sweepers, and we didn't go over those.
Although I would love, on a cooler day, to set up cone courses and practice just to keep sharp, and learn to trust the bike more, but I don't think I'd ride that far down the freeway just for that again.

Was that the Yellow SV parked up at the top end of the parking lot? I was wondering about that.
Not sure of the wisdom of buying a 500cc machine when you obviously can't control it, sounds like she skipped the basic course.

Don't know the details, all we heard was just that if we don't follow the rules then our bikes weren't insured if we had a mishap.
Sandie could probably tell you more.

I dont know about MSF insuring the bikes. I didnt have my insurance card with me and I had to phone the Ins. company and put them on the line. The guy signing me up asked them "is psssniper insured for this specific bike at this specific time" He then took the name of the person we had on the phone. All that would lead me to belive that no, MSF would not cover you or your bike. I'm sure we could find the answer to this question if we would read the waiver we all signed:D

Close one. Mine was expired (the paperwork, not the policy). I'm still insured, but did not have the current paperwork with me. I did exactly what I would do if I was pulled over... handed them the paperwork and kept my mouth shut. She said thank you and handed it back to me. :D Been pulled over in the car before and when I realize, shit, I don't have the current proof of insurance, I just hand them the old one and wait until they ask about it to start explaining. I have not had to explain once yet...
I've been told to only answer their questions. Do not volunteer info.

I attended the Free MSF Training yesterday, it was fun. :D
I actually learned a few things that I thought I was doing wrong. The instructors validated my suspicion's.
It was a long session 4 hours +. Started at 1:30 PM and I left 15 6:00 PM and the group had one more skill to do. It was well worth the time for me at least. :squid:
Met Doc (Red SV1000) from San Diego
I went on the final day yesterday. It was good, and picked up a few pointers like everyone I think.
The weather was hot, and I got burned like a big dog, but thats another sun screen lesson/bad habit I still need to work on.
Met up with Surf City Homie...(Hunnington is the official Surf City USA city) Nice yellow 650s and invited him down for the Gathering, last yr it was in his back yard.
only the big brand new Gold Wing and inexperienced rider down.
Have a great weekend
