Meet Time: 10am
Meet Place: Whole Foods San Diego

After the lobster ride down into Mexico last year... I'm wondering if anyone else wanted to do that again sometime this summer. Anyone?

Exact meet time hasn't been set but I'm thinking meet at an insurance place near the border at around 9-10am. More info on what was done last time is available here:

http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15101&highlight=lobster

It will likely be about the same itinerary.

For who we having going so far:

Mon 6/12/06, 1:27PM
They might be talking about Puerto Neuvo, which is a lobster village just south of the border. I was just there a few weeks ago. I hate fish and was pretty tired of carne asada after a week!

druiid
Mon 6/12/06, 1:48PM
Sandie.. just your luck.. I can't do it 7/1 either :D. I have a race that weekend.. how about 7/8.. or set a better date!

Here's what we did last time: http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15101&highlight=lobster

Okay.. and that's just weird... it was about the same time last year, which I wasn't even considering.

Is this a by invitation only event, or are you going to fill in the rest of us what you are talking about. Lots of lobster in Mexico...

Oh, opps, you edited it, sorry man!

I don't want to necessarily be in charge. My spanish is how you say... Mucho craptastico :P... but I can at least organize the time to meet, etc :).

Oh yeah.. and no, lets not go to the same place again.

Sounds like fun. When we goin', where we goin' what we doin' how we doin' it? I hear Mexico is a little sticky for riders sometimes. Is this true? I'd love to do this. Plus I love lobster. Langistos or Longistos I believe is the Mexican name.

agirls
Mon 6/12/06, 8:05PM
Well, the ride to Puerto Nuevo is fairly troublefree as you will be taking the toll road there and the village is right off the toll road. When you start driving in the cities, then it is kinda scary as people basically go wherever they want to no matter what lane they are in. If that is what you meant.

Oh yes another lobster run... went on one last year but we took a bus down with the hospital so we could drink ;)

Looking forward to munching on some lobster with you fine PeEpS !!!

Are we gonna eat lobster at the new Ortega's Lobster place south of where you ate at last time??? I heard from friends it's allot better but not sure of prices!!!

This is without membership and bike is valued at $6,000

Pick a date soon so I can make arrangements. See... I'm 35 miles north of LA so I'll be coming from a long ways away. May have to make arrangements for a place to crash the night before. Depending on the time we meet and stuff. Still interested though. :D

does anyone remember the name of the place we passed that had the line of people outside because it truely was ALL YOU CAN EAT lobster for like $20 or something?

the only thing going for the place we went to was the convenience (just straight in, parking right in front)...and the rooftop dining, that was pretty nifty :D

TIFOSO
Tue 6/13/06, 8:36AM
it was probably called Ortega's. then again, half the places there are called Ortega's

Also, check your current insurance policy because you might already be covered depending on who insures you. Farmer's Insurance, for example, already insures you upto 75 miles south of the border. And Puerto Neuvo is only what 20 miles south of the border?

Sandie, where did you guys eat before? There are several "Ortega's" there. The one that we ate at was straight through the gate on the right hand side almost at the end of the street. It was 2 stories and it was called Ortega's Balcony (or something close) and it was pretty good. I don't know if they had all you can eat lobster and I am sure they are not the cheapest.

Anyhow, I am sure it will be fun. How safe did you all feel parking your motorcycles there??

sandie
Tue 6/13/06, 8:57AM
i have no idea what the name was of where we went last time, but your description sounds like the place. although, i think it was 3 stories with a patio on the roof (where we ended up eating, which was pretty cool!)

we parked in two car spaces (squeezed what, like 10 or so bikes in there!) that was literally right out front of the restaurant, and one of the workers was posted out front to watch the bikes (or whoever parked there i'm assuming, as they were holding the spots for people eating at their establishment). they actually let us leave the bikes there while we cruised around and shopped for a bit after lunch too...really nice folks. i dont know that we'd have that kinda parking luxury anywhere else

druiid
Tue 6/13/06, 9:22AM
For the right amount of money I'm betting you could get some of the places let you park the bikes inside :D

agirls
Tue 6/13/06, 9:34AM
...while they strip the bikes!! Ha Ha, okay I am only kidding. I am just a little sketchy about Mexico.

Rocko
Tue 6/13/06, 10:05AM
i would rather eat at the same place....the others were trying to be clubs and blaring loud music....the all you can eat one had a huge line...the others didn't have an ocean view...

we had our own parking, an ocean view from the rooftop, what could be better?

i got full coverage insurance for about 20 bucks...check the last year's thread for where, i forgot the name

check out the pics... this (http://www.socalsvriders.org/modules.php?set_albumName=albuv87&op=modload&name=Photo_Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php) is the best place!

oh yeah and as far as i know no one got sick from eating there so what more could we ask for?

Well, we can go to the same place again.. or it sounds like the Lobster House (the place that Ortega's Patio overlooks), might be worth a look if it's not too busy. Votes anyone?

You don't want crowds and you're going to be in Tahoe that weekend? I think that's the busiest weekend of the year up there!

Once you get there, don't try driving anywhere during the day... total zoo.

I need to check, but I know that when travelling on the toll road (which we will be doing) your receipt covers your insurance. What I am not sure about is how far off the road you are covered. If it covers us, it would save us enough money to purchase an "all you can eat one langosta"

Okay, so unless we have any objections, lets do this. Same itinerary as last year. Meet at Whole Foods around 10am. Address is:

711 University Avenue
San Diego, CA 92103

If anyone would like a different meeting spot then suggest, but the nice thing about that one last time was that it was central. From there we'll head south to one of the insurance places near the border and then down to the border crossing. Unless the Lobster House is super busy, lets try for that, rather than Ortega's.

Mon 7/3/06, 8:25AM
It certainly still is. I was actually going to post something mid-week asking for a roll-call to know who should be waited for.. but.. umm, I guess I'll post it now. Can we get some show of hands on who is still going to be able to make this.

I am in, though the 10am meet point might be a stretch. I am going to be leaving Torrance at 8am, so I should make it. If not I will catch up at the insurance place at the border. I am just going to get the AAA stuff on line. I will call if I am running late for some reason.

I was just in Rosarito last week and saw a lot of bikes that way. Looked like a fun ride.

Not gonna do this if i can't get full coverage.

Most will only give liability. That's all pretty much everyone last year had.

Fri 7/7/06, 10:47AM
AAA just told me that they only offer liability and they gave me this whole speach about letting my lender know that I was taking the bike to mexico. At first the guy was "well we have to have something like a notarized permission from your lender" then before I left he handed me a map of Baja and he told me that I can purchase this online and I "dont really have to have the permission slip" from my lender.

I was like ok I'll take care of that on line then. :-?

I set off at 6am from home. Last time I rode my sv to San Diego and back, I had to take a lot of breaks because the naked bike is pretty rough in the wind at freeway speeds.

It was 80 degrees at 7am, and then it looked like rain in Oceanside and only 72! I can't believe after all the planning for this trip and the mexican insurance purchased online that I forgot to check the weather. But it turns out it was just low-hanging fog and it warmed back up to 80 in San Diego proper.

I stopped at my alma mater, San Diego State University. I wanted to pick up a couple tee shirts and snap some photos. I can't believe our beloved bar on campus, Montys has been renamed 'Louies Suds and Sun'. Also the Pfiefer Lounge, which was a huge roomful of chaise lounges and sofas to sleep on, has become a Starbucks. So much changes in the decade since I graduated.

I left for the Whole Foods in Hillcrest to meet the other sv riders by 10am. While I parked and went in to get a coffee, Brian "Ham" arrived and was checking out my parked bike. Within a few minutes, Justice "Druid" drove up to the roof, followed by Rocky and his g/f Diana 2-up. We waited a generous amount of time for stragglers, and after a series of cell phone calls, it was determined that us 5 was it! Not a large group when you are used to the Malibu and Canyon Country rides where Smokescreen/Dragonhawk/Bueller Fett/Bristolbird and other North LA'ers attract 20+ riders to those group rides. But we are hungry for Lobster, so let's go!

We were all well prepared with online insurance and after a few sips of gas at a former Texaco on Texas & University, we were on our way! Except for a crazy squid in khaki shorts grey socks and sandals on a blue Vespa decided to join us down University. We lost the Vespa tail at the freeway entrance and it was smooth sailing down the 805 into Mexico.

I must admit I thought I knew the way, but following those "Ensenada/Rosarito Scenic Road" signs led us away from the toll road that runs along the border and into the heart of Tijuana

http://www.tijuana.com/

I was expecting the absolute WORST in driving conditions, huge potholes and maniac taxi drivers, but it really wasn't that bad. I've experienced ruder and more dangerous drivers on the 405 in California.

While observing the 40 km/h speed limit in TJ, we attracted a 2up GSXR at a traffic light. Some quick conversation and our Puerto Nuevo party had grown by 2! Pete and Angelica from San Bernardino (and recently relocated to Tijuana) were out for a cruise. We asked them where were the good rides in TJ, they mentioned a place I now forget.

Since we missed the first toll road booth, we only had to pay once and Puerto Nuevo comes up fast, just 16 km past the second toll booth at 110 km/h speed limit. The weather was a wonderfully cool 70s, just right for motorcycling.

Ignoring the outmost dirt parking lot and their flag-waving attendants, we drove down the cement cobblestone street. We selected a place called "Ortegas" but the joke was at least 4 places were called some variation of "Ortegas". Food was fine and beers were great, I heard no complants although next time I would argue for the newest largest fanciest place called you guessed it, "Ortegas" at the extreme southwestern tip of Puerto Nuevo. It looks really upscale.

We opted for little shopping at the craft booths - a little wooden turtle here, some mexican candy there, amazed at the machete-wielding lady chopping up fresh coconuts for drinks with a straw, that looked like something Fred Flintstone would sip on. Me + a machete + coconuts would probably mean a severed thumb.

Our luncheon and stroll lasted till just past 2 or 3 so we said our official goodbyes and shook hands since Justice figured we would get way separated in the border crossing traffic mayhem.

We took the toll road back and made great time, I could only steal micro-glances at the scenic view of the Pacific Ocean. Still I wish I could have taken some in-flight pictures.

Along the border fence, averages speeds were about twice as fast as the free road through TJ, so on the way in it was pretty easy to avoid the potholes and swerving taxi cabs. However along this border fence there were huge "speed bumps" that we all hit at 40-50 mph, I had to stand up on the pegs to avoid being bucked off.

Justice's last words were "split all the way up the line" to the border crossing, and what a trip that was. I was wishing I had a helmet cam to show you guys what it was like. The cars didn't have that much mobility, but there are street vendors with carts selling eveything from chicklets to churios, pinatas and picture frames in the space between the cars. So they were times when I had to fold my mirrors in, and duck-walk between 7 year old boys juggling baseballs for tips and surly SUV drivers. I was wishing my sv was as skinny as klr250 or some other tiny thumper but it wasn't bad.

visual:
http://www.emagazine.com/images/1101feat1g.jpg

What was trippy is that you would frequently CHANGE the lane you were splitting in, chasing that ephemeral "better moving slot" between cages. I completely lost sight of Brian and Justice, and with my mirrors folded in I wasn't entirely sure if Rocky and Diana were back there either until I looked back.

Just 4 cars from the US Border Patrol agent and the video cameras aimed at your face, I took a chance and cut in front of a bronze pickup that I thought would honk at me for sure, but they didn't so all's well that ends well. I was expecting a 2 to 3 hour wait, and I had split in what seemed like 20 dicey minutes. Motorcycle is the way to go! Even beats the FastPass/Smartcard that some people have.

I got a few questions from the border patrol and I was worried that my over-stuffed tank bag would be searched, but they waved me through, right as my bike stalled. I tried the starter, and it was DEAD. I guess as that lane splitting was basically like feathering my clutch in first gear and never engaged the engine/alternator. So I duckwalked onto the US side and coasted right towards 3 Border Patrol agents and some spots that said 'US GOVT PARKING ONLY'.

They were a little freaked, before they could reach for their guns I yelled "My bike's died! My bike wont start!" They told me to park it, and first agent said there is an Autozone in San Ysidro, but a second agent said walk to the secondary inspection area, and for an deposit of my ID I could borrow jumper cables. I tried a quick push start but resigned to get the jumper cables as Rocky and Diana would try to save my bacon by removing their seat to get at the battery.

In the time it took to get the jumper cables, Justice appeared. Never underestimate the power of a desperate push-start! Justice pushed me to a full run, I popped it into second and she started right up. One crisis narrowly avoided.

But when Justice's bike didn't start on the second try, Rocky and I looked at each other like "Oh shit..." as it did start on the third try. Rocky started his just to make sure he wasn't in the same boat. We said our goodbyes and good lucks again.

I wanted to take a different route home so I tried the 15 north through Escondido, Fallbrook, Temecula, Lake Elsinore. Oh my god, it was 103 degrees. I was stopping every 60 miles for a cold drink and exercises to keep the blood flowing in my fingers and my arse, and to call my sweetie and let her know I was OK and still coming home.

Pulled into my garage 13 hours and 414 miles later. It was a good day, but I think next time I want Lobster, it'll be RED LOBSTER 5 miles down the street!

Dude, that's like your longest post ever!

Glad you guys had fun, though! So just idling for too long in traffic will make your bike die???

My girl and I had a great time there. She was especially happy to get her hands on some lead to consume a.k.a. Mexican candy. I would have taken more pictures of this scene but since I was carrying a tank bag, my jacket, and 2 helmets, I was a bit preoccupied.

It was a good run but damn 414 was about the max I can handle for now. Going to was easy but heading home was punishment.

I followed the same route John took through the 15. Man that heat by Elsinore was as close to hell as we can get on earth. I was cookin' alive. I mean there's vegas heat in the summer, even the heat I handled in the P.I. before I got to the U.S., and then there was that ride home. It felt like a blow dryer was hitting us at 85 mph#-o . Dyana and I took breaks about every 30 min. My girl was a trooper and didn't complain once. We handled it but its something I wont forget. I remember us both clapping in joy at the stop light close to her apartment. :groove:

I'm down for that kind of trip again, but my girl made a good point, if we go again, we'll reserve a hotel room in SD so we can rest once we crossed the border. :D Whoever needs a rest can chill out with us of course!

Justice thanks for leading the group. You're a good leader and I'd roll with you anytime. This goes for the rest of the group as well. You guys kept an eye out for me and my girl when we fell a little behind. Good lookin out. :vic:

That's one hell of a narration John, you obviously took detailed mental notes of all the events. Hope you figure out what happened to that battery. I'm kinda glad it happened though because I learned how to get under my seat. I never had to before so that was a good time to learn! ;)

Brian was comedy, we gotta teach you more spanglish in case that hottie mexican lady pops up one day! You'll need more than "No quiero" to close the deal

The lobster was ok, the scenery was cool, the atmosphere was chill, but the entire experience was great!

We gotta try that new lobster house next time!

anyone interested doing this the last weekend of august..
I was thinking it'd be a good way to say good bye to the summer.

Dyana and I are down for that.

That should give us plenty of time to plan things out for the next run.

Dyana also suggested that we exit out of the Tecate border instead of the SD border due to the heavy traffic. I dont know how feasable that is coming from Puerto Nuevo but I know from experience that leaving through the Tecate Border was a ton easier. Just a thought....

Well my girl said that if anyone would like to take the 15 fwy route to SD can use her apartment as a meeting/rest spot before heading into SD.

This might be usefull for those traveling a long ways from SD. Her place in Corona is about 85 miles from the meet spot in SD. Its right off the fwy so its quick and easy. Assuming we are meeting in the same spot.

I might.. against better judgement.. be getting another streetbike in the next couple weeks. If I do, I might be able to do another lobster run. Would there be interest in doing so (enough to justify it)?
