Meet Time: 9.00 Am
Meet Place: Barnes Noble at Mira Mesa

Thinking Scripps poway parkway to 67 into Ramona, then old julian highway to dudleys bakery, hang a left onto 79 and up the east grade of Palomar past Lake henshaw OR take the Mesa Grande Rd detour then back or try S22 Montezuma Valley Rd into Borrego Springs.

Just did a similar ride the other day - through Ramona and Julian down into Borrego (NICE twisties down the mountain). Then after lunch in Borrego, up the S22 (more NICE twisties) to the 79 then back down to Ramona (though you could make the turnoff to Palomar if you wanted).

Sounds like a good ride though - I'll have to see if I can get my permission slip signed by my SO :geek:

Ok, I think I should be able to make this ride...

About what time are you expecting us to wind it down?

SV650Rider
Fri 6/16/06, 9:27AM
I think it will probably be around 1pm or so, depends on if we decide to go down to the borrego springs or not.

If you all would not mind me taggin along, I would love to go. Its been 2 years since I have been on any twisties and turnies and that was on a borrowed Harley. I might be a little slow for a bit, but I will eventually get there.

Bronco,
No problem, this is going to be a medium pace ride for the most part, those who want to take risks and ride on the edge can be in front. The plan is to stop every so often and regroup.

See you guys tomorrow.

I'll be waiting for youse guys at the turnoff from Hwy 78 to go to Old J. I'll shoot for 9:15 or so...

Iceburg98
Fri 6/16/06, 9:54PM
Ok, count me in.

I'll try to be there as close to 9am as I can - I'm usually a little slow that early in the morning...:p

And don't worry Bronco, I'll probably be back there with ya ;)

Are we just meeting in the parking lot? any particular area?

Bronco
Fri 6/16/06, 10:00PM
Cool, see ya all there then.

Sat 6/17/06, 2:48PM
Well, sorry I missed you guys. I won't get into my Tale of Woe, instead I'll just say I was really really late. Still had a good ride though - Palomar was nice and clear so I did a few laps of the fast side. Hopefully you all had as nice a ride as I did!

It was going good till we were headed to Borrego Springs. Up in Yaqui Pass, one of our riders lowsided his bike about a mile to half a mile from the top.

We are not sure 100% of what happened, but we kinda deduced that his peg spike caught the pavement causing his bike to move and he lost it from there. He was semi-out of it for about 3-4 mins and then came around, hit pretty hard on the left side of his helmet and shoulder area. While we were trying to loosen his gear up, he came around and sat up, was trying to keep him immobile. We luckily had some nice peeps stop and gave him a ride into Julian and loaded the bike into the back of a pickup and took into Julian as well. The rider, Lee(I know he does post on here, but not very often and I do not know his screen name), was ambulanced to Escondido to the hospital to get checked up and get a cast on one of his hands, while we dropped the bike off at the yard.

The only real damage to the bike was the forks, one was bent and the other was completely snapped in two, the guy immediately behind him saw most of it(except what caused it) and said the bike nailed the gaurd rail, which would explain the forks.

Still waitin to hear how Lee is and hope you are doin good bud, you did not look good there for a few seconds.

Yeah, it was really unfortunate we had a crash but fortunately Lee seemed to be in better condition than what most motorcycle crashes end up to be...

I was behind Lee and it definitely sucks to see someone go down. Hope you're doing better man, maybe you or Sal can give us an update on how you are.

None the less, it was a good run with everyone and nice to meet you all. Bronco, maybe we could do a run together when the wife is out getting her nails done again ;-)

Here are some pics of the ride. Take care everyone.

Yeah - the ride was real fun up until Yaqui Pass - then it just got interesting

I was right behind Bronco coming up the hill, so unfortunately I didn't get there in time to see what happened, but it was kind of scary coming around a corner to see everyone stopped on the side of the road, and one of your riders down not moving...

Fortunately he did come to, and was able to get up under his own power. He seemed to be pretty shaken up, bit of a cuncussion, hurt his wrist and was a bit beaten, but overall he was in good shape considering.

A couple of our group followed him to the hospital, so hopefuly we're hear some updates soon.

Good thing there are still some nice people out there - the guy in the truck and nice couple in the car definately get my (and I think all of our) thanks for helping us get the bike and Lee back to town.

I think all parties involved were very cool, but speaking of the couple; Did anyone find that woman with the accent to be very attractive? I was thinking of figuring how to ditch her husband out in Yaqui, but they were too nice in helping.

The one in the shorts?

Bronco
Sat 6/17/06, 10:49PM
Yeah, the one in the shorts, but, I am still salivating over the blonde in Dudley's(doin a quick check to ensure the wife is not lookin over my shoulder).

I agree Ice, the first thing I said when I got to the turn was f*ck and was hopin someone else on a yellow SV was comin down the hill instead of it bein Lee, though, I do not wish that on anyone.

BTW, went to the bike meet on Friday nite in the Santee Target parking lot and am going to become a regular there, got alot of great info and alot of good hookups(that is where I learned about the hookup for racing tires for $80 a set). I am going next Friday, Ice and Del, if you wanna hook up there and speaking of hooking up, I really enjoyed riding with the both of ya and I am free in 2 weeks(got the kids next weekend), so, lets start planning the ride right now. Either Saturday or Sunday would be great. I would love doin the Telegraph Canyon out to Lake Cuyamaca, up the front way to Julian for pie(gotta love pie) and down Old Julian highway to the road out to Barona or even a ride out to Palomar( still have not got out there yet and am very itchin to go).

One last thing, sorry I was up in your arse so much coming back Ice, I just miss riding so much and was having a hard time not trying to pick it up at that point. :D My God its so great bein back on a bike, I still can't believe I let the wife not let me get a bike 4 years ago.

Hey guys,
Just an update on Lee, hes still in the hospital. They xrayed and cat scanned and MRI the heck out of him. He has broken two of the bones that connect the index and middle finger to the arm (top side of the wrist). The bones broke and punched through the skin. Hes supposed to have an operation tomorrow to have them joined via pins.

His back was pretty beatup as well, he has compression fratures of c7 and t4 section and it looks like he will have to wear an external brace for a few months to help take the weight off the discs.

I want to thank all of you for helping him out today, I would have freaked out if I was on my own. I was really glad that he had full gear on, otherwise his injurys could have been a lot lot worse. So please make sure that you wear full gear when you go out. The accident today shows that it doesnt take much speed to really get the crao beaten out of your body, use as much protection as you can afford.

Hope to see you guys again soon.
-Sal

Holy crap - I didn't think it would have been that bad. I don't think he ever took his gloves off after the crash, but since he could move his fingers, I think we all assumed nothing was broken - and the lack of blood wouldn't make you think anything punched through the skin...

He was complaining that his back hurt a bit too, so the compression fractures make sense.

+1 on wearing full gear for every ride. Another forum I belong to has the favorite saying of "All the gear, all the time" - cuz you never know when's it's gonna be your lucky day...

Speaking of which - coming back through Poway this :squid: passed me on what looked like a Yamaha R-something - full "squid gear" of b-ball jersey, shorts, flip-flops and helmet. He nodded at me as he rode past, and all I could do was shake my head at him after seeing a rider go down in full gear and have a hard time getting himself back up...

As for another ride in a couple of weeks, let me check my schedule - I should have some time coming up, just have to check dates...

edit:

Just wikipedia'd the position of those vertebrae - C-7 is base of the neck  and T-4 seems to be between the shoulders... He'll definately be stiff for a few days...

Bronco
Sun 6/18/06, 8:54AM
Ouch and at the same time good, it could have been alot worse. Tell him good luck today with the surgery Sal.

My favorite :squid: moment yesterday was when we were going through Julian the first time, looked over and a Harley guy was rollin down the street and wearin a half helm, shorts, flip flops, tshirt, and talkin on his cell phone.

Would have to agree on the full gear, am gonna have to look into gettin some pants.

WTF??? on his cell phone??? I think I missed that one.

Yeah - pants are good - if you want to save a bit of money, mesh overpants are nice - also check the close-outs on newenough.com - they usually have good deals on some pretty nice stuff there.

The pants I was wearing yesterday were Fieldsheer Titanium Air Pants- they're mesh with textile in the impact zones with some pretty heavy duty knee and hip armor. I got them on closeout for like $50 - nice and cool once you get moving, but still very protective...

Sal,
Sorry to hear about that man...was hoping he would get through with just the injury to his fingers.

Those are some pretty good pics - do you mind if I steal a few of them to post a ride report on another site?

Any news on how the operation on Lee's hand went?

SV650Rider
Sun 6/18/06, 9:28PM
iceburg,
The operation seemed to have gone through ok, it took them a little over 2 hours as the bone had shattered into many smaller pieces. He's doped up on morphine now but seems to be doing well. We will find out about his back tomorrow.

Venk,
Thanks for the pictures dude, they look great!

the bone had shattered into many smaller pieces.

Which bones were they exactly? I think I would have been in a lot more pain if i had shattered pieces of bone punching through my skin

At least they got him on the morphine:->

Ice, I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw it, I did not think anyone was that frickin stupid. I mean come on, ridin with no protection, but doin it while talkin on a cell phone? As Forest said, Stupid is as stupid does.

Sal, give us an update on Lee and let him know, our prayers are with him. BTW, I did not just mean the ride was great with just Del and Ice, enjoyed everyones company that day. Gordo was an absolute hoot, I think if he would have apologized to me one more time bout bein slow, I would have fell on the floor lmao. He definately kept me from bein in Lee's situation, which is good.

Last, I am not kiddin about the ride weekend after next, if I have to go alone, I will, but would really appreciate some company. Like I said, really enjoyed ridin with you all and would do it again anytime.

Hey - I'm free this Sunday, and next Sunday as well...

Like Bronco said, it was really great riding with all of you. Great group of guys - definately fun on and off the bikes :groove:

And yes, please keep us updated... also, I was thinking - does anyone know an address where we can send lee a card or something? I'd just like to let him know that we're all here for him and hoping for the best

Mon 6/19/06, 9:40PM
BTW Ice, picked up a set of leather pants today off of EBay for $109. Will never do a ride like that again without full protection.

Look at that... hardcore rider right there everyone. Good to know you're as spirited as me (and I'm sure all on this board as well).

Ice, good idea on the card. Might schedule a ride for this weekend, keep ya posted.

I usually do all my rides alone, since I can never find anyone else who can go out on a Tuesday :p

But yeah, I just feel like we kind of put him in the ambulance, and said "there ya go, buddy..."

And especially since we're all so concerned about him since we were the ones do deal with it first hand, I think it would be nice to let him know that we're still thinking about him and concerned, and not just forgetting about it and going on to the "next ride".

I think that little gesture would go a long way to boosting his spirts - which must have taken just as big a blow has he did...

SV650Rider
Mon 6/19/06, 10:28PM
you guys rock..I would go on a ride with you anytime cause I know if something happened to me you're not just gonna leave me by the side of the road to fend for myself :)

Lee is getting better every day, he will prob be out by Wednesday with a clamshell brace for his front and back (to reduce pressure on the spine) and a neck brace. I told him about this thread and he is going to look it up as soon as he gets home and has access to the net. I told him you all are thinking of him, so he knows that.

Bronco,
Smart move with the pants dude, everytime you see a biker without gear, if you get a chance let them know what fools they are. I'll quote Lee here, talking about gear, "I'd rather sweat than bleed".

Iceburg98
Mon 6/19/06, 10:50PM
"I'd rather sweat than bleed"

+100 to that!

but that's why all my summer gear is perforated or mesh :D

Sometimes I wish those squids out there in their shorts and t-shirts would have a little scrape-up while riding... nothing major or life-threatening... just enough of a skinning to make them wake up and think to themselves "hmmm... maybe those people in jackets actually know something I don't..." :-?

Bronco - nice buy on leather pants for $100! I want to get a nice pair of perf leather pants sometime but am having a hard time finding ones I like... oh well...
