If you stay stock you have a 15t 44t gearing. The naked models have 15t 45t gearing. The S models use the 108 link chain while the nakeds use the 110 link because of the bigger rear sprocket. You can up one on your s model 45t and use the 110 link chain. You can also convert to 520 chain and sprockets which helps loose a bit of weight compared to the huge 525 stock chain.

 huh??
So instead of trying to understand all that (thanks for the thorough btw), what do you suggest?

you have an s version which means you need a 108 chain..
now unless your gearing has been changed( check your sprockets for numbers) then you may need a longer one. As for the 520 conversion...unless your really racing or worring about weight..not really needed and if your bike is transportation, stay with steel sprockets..
Benefits to the 520 chain lower cost, easier to find..

You have an S model so the stock set up is 15 tooth front and 44 tooth rear sprocket. The chain you have is a 108 link chain. The size of the stock chain and sprockets are 525, this is the thickness of the drive train (chain and sprockets). The higher the number the more heavy duty the drive train is. The SV does not put out enough power to break a 520 chain and sprockets so it is prefered by a lot of people since the chain is lighter and thinner. It takes a bit more power to move a heavier chain and sprockets. If you change to the 520 chain you will need to change your sprockets as well, they are not compatible.
If you get a rear sprocket bigger than stock, which would be anything bigger than 44 tooth which is stock than you will have to start looking at getting a longer chain as well. That is why Mike has chains listed at 108 links and 110 links. The 108 link chain is good for your bike if you use the same tooth count on your sprockets as the stock ones when buying new sprockets (15 tooth and 44 tooth). If you go bigger than 44 tooth for your rear sprocket get a 110 link chain. The 108 and 110 link chains is how long the chain is in case that was not understood. Yhe bigger rear gear gets you more power at lower RPM's. With the bigger rear sprocket and lighter chain (520) you will feel a quicker response when you twist the throttle.
Hope this made a little more sense.

If you do not know what you have on it, count the teeth on the sprockets. That's what I did. My local Cycle Gear did not have the 525 chain in stock, but they had it the next day. They had lots of 520s though. So, I stayed with stock since I'm not exactly a racer and really don't care. It was better than my broken chain. :p

Mike,
I never came back and told you, but thanks for the deal! The new chain is great.
FYI to all, I have a 650S and Mike was nice enough to cut a 110 to 108 links for me, since he was temporarily out of the 108L 525.

so, if i wanted to change to a 520 chain, all i would need is the appropriate front/rear sprockets (of the correct teeth) and the 520 chain? nothing else special about the swap?
Since the 520 is a smaller chain, does it effect the gear ratio at all? like, is a 14/45 525 the same gearing as 14/45 520?
thanks in advance.

The chain is just thinner thus lighter. The gearing will stay the same. You will just have a bit more power as the motor doesn't work as hard to get the lighter chain moving.

If you go to a 520, make sure you are religious with your chain maintenance. Smaller and lighter comes with a price, especially on a liter bike.

I don't think it is a great idea to go 520 on a liter bike. One should always clean chain and relube about every 400 miles at least. More if you just ride once in a while and your bike sits a lot. Condensation and such can cause moisture to start rusting your chain. Chains are easy to clean and maintain if you know what to use and do it often enough. Takes me like 30 minutes from start to finish. This is with a 10 minute freeway ride in between to get all of the water out of the chain before relube.

I just sold my bike and I would like to get the new owner a new chain and sprocket. The stock ones would do...not looking to spend a lot of money. What do you recommend?
Thanks.

I think hes just talking about the condensation build up. Although, personally I use water with tide, followed by downey fabric softener because I prefer chains with more a floral scent.
By the way, can I buy just the rivet link? I have a chain with a clip link and it's gone to shit.
