The same. Because I wasn't racing anyone during the endurance race I backed off my pace after the first couple of laps so the bike wouldn't slide around as much (I would have a 2 wheel slide coming out of 9 every time I hit the apex hard).

Now I'm thinking if I make some adjustments to the shock that will help the rear wheel. I'll need to e-mail Zoran.

Congratulations Kurt.

I kept a pretty low profile this weekend. I was burnt from the corner work on saturday and after the riders meeting on sunday I actually left the track and went into town to eat and get out of the heat.

Came back at about 1 pm and even then hung out in my friends car with the air conditioning on, up at turn four, and fell asleep. I came down right before it was time to grid, wasn't to thrilled to be there and basically just wanted to get it over with.

2 starts. Someone crashed in turn 7 on the outside (how do you do that?) on the first lap.

Ken got a massive start the 1st start and and even better one on the 2nd. Ken, what are you doing? Is it gearing, did you mod the engine, or are you just revving it to high heaven and frying the clutch each weekend?

Did my personal best this weekend druing morning practice 1'36.38".

Finished 15th, Ken finished 7th and he was flying. My friend Mikey on his kwak 636 crashed out on 3 and broke his ankle.

race report coming soon

Best of all, I"M OUTTA NOVICE!!!!!!!!!

Sa-weet! More SV's to race with in 550SB! But more importantly, more people in 550SB (there were only 8 of us yesterday :( ). Either of you guys notice how that guy on the naked red SV (with black tail) did? He has a black helmet with an British flag sticker on the back of it (though I think he's French).

RacR4JC
Mon 8/16/04, 1:56PM
BTW, congrats kurt, 2nd in the Solo, that takes some stamina! No clue about the french dude, he was slow.

Stevan: Gearing is better, engine is same...if you came to a jetski race you would understand more about the start. I launched @ 7k and slipped the clutch keeping the tire about 2 inches from the ground and slammed through the gears. I have Barnett plates now, stock clutch was failing.

I witnessed turn 7 crash actually it was more like 6b if there was a 6b... He tapped Melissa's ass down 6 and she slapped him, almost highsided in the process.

huevos
Mon 8/16/04, 2:01PM
I saw him.

He must of been behind me throughout the whole race because he passed me after the checkered flag during the cool down lap going into turn one.

Saw it was a naked SV and thought, "Gee, sweet, another brick piloting fool...I am no longer the only one." I'm pretty sure it was maroon and it was definitely a pre-03.

Kurt'sSV
Mon 8/16/04, 2:03PM
Yeah, Melissa said she had no clue what the hell happened behind her in 6. All she knew was that she was going to high side. It wasn't until after the race was over that she looked at her exhaust and saw that someone nailed it. Be sooooooooo glad you are out of novice.

I launched @ 7k and slipped the clutch keeping the tire about 2 inches from the ground and slammed through the gears.

That's what I do, too. The SV launches fast. In 550 I went into turn 1 in 4th behind 2 other SVs and and Richie Thorup's FZR Frankenbike.

huevos
Mon 8/16/04, 2:30PM
I'm sorta slow on the pick up of the posts this afternoon.

Congrats on getting outta novice Ken. (I just saw your post)

So.... 7k huh? I rev it to around 3-4k, lean forward, just pop the clutch and gas it. The wheel just barely comes up in 1st and usually comes up when I slam it into 2nd and I'm pretty sure I don't get past 3rd before turn 1. Maybe I'll try the clutch frying technique. I haven't up until now because the less I have to do to the bike, the less money I have to spend on it, the better.

RacR4JC
Mon 8/16/04, 2:44PM
The pop might wreck more than the slip. I'm in 4th by turn 1 and then 5th into 2...I'm 14/44 at the moment, what is your gearing?

Slaughter
Mon 8/16/04, 7:45PM
BRAVO all o'yous!

You are ALL outta novice and I'm not outta the garage (but sure am outta MONEY!)

Gonna miss next month with Vegas.

Are any of you doing Sportbike Track Time on Labor DAy on the Big Track? I'll be testing.

huevos
Tue 8/17/04, 3:37AM
I'm running stock gearing: 45/15.

Final reduction ratio of 3.00 as opposed to 3.14 for you. Leaving the front alone, I'd have to go up two teeth in the rear to get around where you're at.

In the end, its prolly not that. More than likely, I think, its a simple matter of physics and Newton's 2nd law of motion:

F=ma

where F=force, m=mass, and a=acceleration.

solving for acceleration:

a=F/m

In other words, in order for acceleration to be silly fast, Force needs to be big...or mass needs to be small.

Well...hmmm...let's see...

My Force is around 3-4k of rev...not too good compared to 7k.

My mass...well...hmmmmmmmm...

OK!OK!...SO YES!...YOU GOT ME!...MY FAT ASS COULD STILL STAND TO LOSE A COUPLE OF POUNDS!...SO?...GEEEEZ!
...YOU GUYS HAPPY?

Physics lesson is over f-ckers, thank you very much.

Later.

P.S. As you can prolly tell, the E.R. is sorta slow tonight, hence the 3 a.m. post.

'night.:p

Oh, by the way.

I want to give a big public thank you to Steve Slaughter for coming up with the goods, without hesitation, and without even being asked, when it came to sourcing belly pans for the upcoming rule change requiring the SVs to have one.

He made them himself.

You rock Steve! Dinner's on me next month if were both out there. Sorry I didn't get a chance to thank you in person after my race on Sunday.

Later.

Here is a pic of your guys'es race that Kent took. Ken is the bike farthest to the left (680) and you can see Stevan coming up the hill (652). Then way in the back ground you can see that other naked SV and rider with a black helmet.

Great shots. Did you catch any grief for being out there being that Devin has pretty much had a monopoly on the whole photo thing?

The photos are a great learning tool. I have made adjustments on foot positioning, arm/leg placement, stance and even lines based on what I see in photos taken while out on the track. I pick up things that I wouldn't be aware of otherwise.

Thanks for being out there and adding a different perspective to things

Pics can tell you a lot about your body position, I have learned a lot from looking @ pics. Go to a track day & feel really good about body position and then look at the pics....and figure out I still have a long ways to go!

Kurt'sSV
Wed 8/18/04, 11:24AM
Kent took about 4 with me in them (I will get them from him when I can make a 20 dollar donation to the Palomar Pics fund), and yeah, it's interesting to see what your body position is really like. I lean my upper body over much more than most people do. I think I'll continue to ride like that, plus it makes me look like I'm going faster.

RacR4JC
Wed 8/18/04, 11:44AM
Lol. Upper body is a large mass and when you stick it out there, really helps with moving your CG. When I figured this out, I started going way faster.

I belive its $130 is that true?? and non WSMC racers like myself can come out for the day??

Kurt'sSV
Sat 9/11/04, 6:20PM
Yeah, you can do a Friday track day with WSMC for 130, BUT you have to buy a "street riders" membership for like 50 bucks as well (it's a one time thing, but if you are only planning on doing 1 Friday track day with them, 180 bucks is a lot for one day). But, if you've got the dough, go for it. I would recommend doing Trackdaz'es track day on the big track on October 25th (a Monday) instead (I'll be there :) ). It's 130 bucks, but no "membership" fee.

I like the Friday street group track days with WSMC just because they're so empty and you get a lot of quality track time.

The cost is maybe a bit more, but there is the advantage of just staying up there for the whole weekend and checking out races.

If I can get out of work, I will be doing the Friday street group this week.

I just stuck this vinyl "motocross" number backing over the front and across the tail and stuck numbers on top of it. My bike really isn't in "race trim" :D (I just like to pretend it is. )

Oh my god was it a windy weekend at the track. We were cold on Sunday. My times in 550SB were slow as hell because of the wind, but I still felt that I road well when I wasn't being a puss in turn 8. My starts in the endurance race and 550SB were weak. Not sure what my problem was. I think Ken should teach a clinic on how to launch a bike. I think he went into turn 1 in third place starting from the fifth row.

Glad you guys came out and watched. More of you should come out next month for the Toyota 200 on October 17th.

Was the wind blowing to the outside or the inside of Turn Eight?

Kurt'sSV
Mon 9/20/04, 12:53PM
Inside, from the southwest like usual. Caused some nasty crashes. In one of the 600cc races a guy on a borrowed bike cartwheeled it off the track entering 8. That destroyed machine (pic below) that was once an R6 was the B bike of the race winner. On the cool off lap the race winner got tangled up with someone congradulating him. He crashed (entering 2) and his bike caught ON FIRE! I think the wind gusts screwed them up and caused them to come together. Another guy crashed on the cool down lap as well and someone didn't even make the start because he crashed on the warm-up lap. That was not a good race.

F#&K!!!!!!

That is one TORE-UP bike!

The only time I ever put my knee down in Eight was when a gust of wind just literally picked up my old GPz and moved it all the way toward the outside of that turn. I figured a lowside would be better than riding into the dirt at full-chat in sixth; leaned over hard, made it through, rode like a wuss the rest of the day ...

Been a long time and now the SV starts getting rebuilt.

I'm pitting for Scott Jensen on Sunday in the T-200

Ken (Racer4JC) and I had an awesome race against each other in middle weight twins. I've never raced so hard.

In 550SB I ripped off a 1:33.4 on my fourth lap but I still only finished 9th out of 19. I had to come from dead, dead last at the start because I, um, was in 6th gear when the green flag dropped and it took me about 20 seconds to figure out what was wrong with my bike. Hehe, oops. :o It was fun passing a bunch of people, though.

Robert, that belly pan worked out great but I wore a hole in it coming out of 9. We'll have to work on it before next months races.

WEnt out for practice today - weather was perfect and the afternoon wind died down. Getting cold nights now!

Advanced Racer School is an awesome thing. 3 students per instructor and they'll WORK with you - especially if you ask them to spot you in difficult sections.

Curtis Adams and Jeff Stern were today's instructors and there were only 5 students. Kinda cool having the whole session to just 7 riders!

See you guys tomorrow and Sunday!

Generally around 10:00. Practices start at 8. Each group gets 2 sessions at ~10 min which puts that at 9:30. Then a 15-20 min riders meeting. Assuming no crazy accidents in the morning.

Cool, Zak. My first race is the 3rd race of the day, but my second race is like the 3rd to last of the day. GetinJiggyWitit's race is 2 races before my second race I think. We'll be pittging at the yellow wall again. It's supposed to be windy and cool tomorrow, so probably no canopy. See ya there. (I assume you'll be there too, Oren)

Sun 11/21/04, 3:01PM
That was a crappy race day. Between cold, wind, drizzle, and even a bit of snow falling down, the races were called after race 3 which was started at about 12:30. Oil cleanups had to occur during practice, first race and second race. I think only third race was clear of oil but there were crashes all day. I almost lost it in turn 1 on the first lap of practice. There was just absolutely no grip.

It goes to figure Friday is perfect, Saturday is good, and then Sunday is just absolute hell.

WSMC is also not giving carryovers for people's first race entered. There goes $70 for five laps in the morning.

Where's that puking smiley that I can paste in here???.

3 grenaded engines oiling the track - one running down the front straight into turn 1 was really spooky coming out to practice afterwards!

We had the last race of the day and how many people get the chance to race in rain and snow on the SAME LAP???

Amazing to see how fast Kurt and Kenny have gotten (even in the sh*tty conditions) Kenny handed me my butt coming into turn 3 and because I'm on the "other" bike, I could take him back in the fast sections. Doesn't seem right but I have to acknowledge that he can take me in the corners now.

Now I gotta get my SV back up to speed again!

Good to see Oren out having fun - good they called the race before the 600-classes started out. With all the crashes they normally have, it'd have been a bloody day today.

Kudos to the organizers for calling it off after about 3 crashes each race and for racing supposedly starting at 9 AM with a new race every 20 minutes - race 3 wasn't called off till after something like 1230... fun is fun but today was a beyotch!

During our final red flag, I was chatting with the turn 8 corner workers and told them I hoped they'd be calling it off. Those poor souls are out there ALL DAY with no protection from the elements except the clothes they bring with them. What they lack in teeth, they make up for with dedication!

Yeah, holy crap that was a cold, crappy day. Being that I'm one of the few people who got to do their first race, I'm not out any money, but for others, like Jiggy, I feel bad. But that's how it has to be I guess.

Once we got going in the race my tires felt fine. Of course I wasn't going very fast, but I'll have to say I'm a Dunlop fan now.

I'll probably go out and watch the racing in December, especially because I want to see Jiggy and Shaggy's first race, but no more racing for me until January.

Well I just got done unloading the truck and showering so now I can finally relax! :tired: Very interesting day compared to yesterday. Yesterday was beautiful I only wish I had more track time. I haven't been on my bike really since July 31st and I still managed to pull a 1:42 in my first session out. It's about 4 seconds off of what I was running last time out there, but I was feeling pretty rusty and with a new shock I was a little timid at first. Not to mention just nervous. Then...

Race Day! Yeah! Well not really. It was colder then cold! and I couldn't get ready in time for light weight practice and I ended up going out in the middle weight practice. SCARY! My tires were like bricks and it seemed like I was going to crash in every turn. I was putting it around the whole track. I only got one lap in and saw 2 people go down.

In the second practice again I had to makes some adjustments to the reservoir mount on the penske and I missed the light weight practice again. I had to go out with the middle weights. I was even thinking of sitting this one out because it was soooooooo damn cold I couldn't even feel my clutch or brake levers. I went out and tippy toed it around again and some guy passed me hard on the inside going into five and another guy tried to pass me on the outside. Just then as he was right next to me I glanced over at him just in time to see him do his best impersonation of superman . His front end went out and down he went.

As I was coming around towards turn 3 I saw a cloud of dust and as I went buy I saw it was this guy named John from my new racer's class. I went through 5 and the superman guy was picked up. Then when I went around again and some guy crashed hard in 2 and then as I was heading to 3 I figured that John had been picked up, but his bike was still there along with another guy's bike! The flags came out and I headed in.

Then the races more crashes and blown motors and then it was all called off.

It was neat seeing Kurt out there and watching Dustin (Trackpimp from Trackdaz) take an 11th place finish in 650sbk while it was snowing and he was on slicks! What sucks is after 2 restarts they cut the race down to 4 laps on on the last lap Dustin was within striking distance of 4 guys!

Kurt I can honestly say I was worried and I am kinda glad that my race was canceled. It was a bitter cold day.

Deno, Stoble, Pulse, and Sean Thank you for making that long drive up and supporting Shaggy and I, I am sorry that it didn't happen though.

Till Next Month!

jgy, it was good to meet you, glad to have another SV'er out there. sorry your first experience was such a sucky one, this weekend had probably the best (sat) and worst (sun) days i've ever had at the track. Kurt, your a crazy man. my bike was slippin and slidin all through 2 and 5 and I was sticking everything i could off the bike to decrease some lean angle. I had a slick on the back which wasn't cool and a rensport on the front. I'm glad they didn't have a front slick for me @ pirelli cuz i would have been in the dirt with the other guys. Slaughter, your a nut too, after sliding the front through 5 numerous times on that semi-wet track, i said screw that speed thing! lol, and thank God we all kept it on 2 wheels. you guys ride safe and i might.... not see you next month lol. be at fontana next weekend, hope to see some guys and nice weather there!

I was one of the lucky ones who got a race in. Unbelieveably, I wound up 2nd; nice big trophy. I was on my best friend's EX500; unfortunately, due to the conditions and his poor choice of tires, the thing slid damned near everywhere. I consistently lost the front in Five, frequently in Three, and occasionally elsewhere; I've been racing about a decade and have never been more consciously concerned about merely staying upright.

Was 4th and last going into Turn One at the start; bike went sideways in Two, to what felt like full lock in Three, then one of the guys in front of me crashed in Five and I backed off, thinking another of my friends might have been leaking something. His motor grenaded in between Turns 8 and 9. I don't mind saying it was terrifying crawling through there, KNOWING there was oil all over the place; I was just waiting to hit the pavement. The 25-minute cleanup was an exercise in Zen; I had no idea of who would be back out there when we restarted, and I really wanted a trophy badly. The guy who blew up the motor got on a backup bike; the guy who crashed didn't make it back, but another guy who had crashed earlier in the day made the restart. My bike still handled like it was on gravel, so I adopted the Mark Donohue rain race strategy; crawl through the corners, hammer it down the straights. I had more than enough horsepower to stay in second.

I would have raced in the rain for my second race, but it was easy enough for me to accept the cancellation. It was like the universe said, thanks for coming out, here's a trophy, now go home before you hurt yourself.

I'm VERY glad no one got really hurt yesterday.

Hey Kurt,

I meant to stop by on Sunday, but I got there late due to road closure on the 138. By the time I arrived and got situated there, they were calling it a day. :p

I did see the BOTT race, and it was good seeing you and a few other board members out there on the track. You must have left soon after they called it quits though - I was around your pit area and there was no truck in sight. Anyway, glad no one on here went down.

Yeah, the second I pulled in after the race Shandra was ready to go. She was a little hysterical about the fact that snow was falling from the sky (which is rather odd for a person who grew up in Michigan). So we were out of there pretty quick. I was disappointed that they canceled the day because I was having fun out there during the race. There probably would have been crashes in every other race and the day would have had to have been called early anyway.

Thank you Zoran for hooking me up with those rubber caps and hose clamps!! Too bad I didn't get to go out as they shut down the facility just before race #4 (600SS). NEXT TIME tho. ;)

For those of you who didn't get to race your novice races.. I talked with Danny Farnsworth and he said that he would credit you guys with a carry-over good for your "second race entry" when you become a probational expert next year. So all is not lost. That was UUUBER cool of him to hook that up. We all felt bad that the day had to be cancelled but they made the right decision. Too many injuries, crashes and oil everywhere.. not to mention the horrible weather! WSMC busted their asses off trying to keep the day going for us. So hope you guys are a little happier now! :)

Gotta find out the details but according to RRW, it sure smells like $$$ Huth was pissed that Danny cancelled the races meaning a hit in the wallet for the Huths.

Danny did the right thing in calling it off. Every freaking practice and race had too many people crashing and oiling the track.

SURE - at the end of the day you can look back and say we COULD HAVE raced but living here in the desert and flying here since 1968, I know Danny did what was right - trying to outguess the weather - especially considering all the damage happening - and they really hadn't gotten to the squid-snuffing classes yet.

He erred on the side of caution - those of you who have had new racer school KNOW how serious he is about safety in a dangerous game. Calling it off had to be a hard call to make but he had the cojones to make the call.

I keep thinking that Danny probably doesn't need the BS that it sounds like he is exposed to with the Huth Family (owners of both Willow Springs Raceway and WSMC) - he's probably home thinking "who needs this shit?" He's got a good day job and the WSMC gig is a thankless task.

I'm going to wait to see what info comes out but am composing a letter to Bill Huth on Danny's behalf and unless new information surfaces by noon tomorrow, I'll send it.

even if they had waited until 2 pm, according to that article, the remaining 15 races couldn't have been run by 4:30 pm. the 1st entries were forfeit, so the track still got the operating costs covered.

I'm sending a letter tomorrow.

Mr. Bill Huth
c/o Ronda
Willow Springs Motorcycle Club

Dear Mr. Huth,

This is regard to the termination of Danny Farnsworth. I am sorry to hear you have made this decision. I personally, along with many other members of WSMC feel that this was a terrible mistake. Mr. Farnsworth does nothing but stress safety for the racers.

WSMC safety is one of the main reasons why I chose to race with this club. Now with out Mr. Farnsworth I am not so sure what WSMC’s intentions are. Is money more important then the safety of the club members? Yes the weather did get better for a bit, but who can predict the weather? No one. If I remember right even the tower was looking at the weather report online and they said it wasn’t going to get any better.

I would like you reconsider your decision and understand why Mr. Farnsworth made his decision. Just think about what would have happened to the club if racing continued and someone was seriously hurt or killed. Mr. Farnsworth was walking a double edge sword and he chose the side in best interest of the racers’ safety. That is a great decision.

For these reasons, I urge to reinstate Danny Farnsworth straight away. Thank you for your consideration.

Thank you,
Michael Bisig

Any of us who have been around the sport for any length of time can name several riders who should be alive today, but - because of someone not having the balls to stand up and say, it's not safe, we're not racing here today - we've gone to their funerals, in spirit if not in fact.

Thanks, Danny, for putting us and our well-being first.

This is fucked.

however you can not say that because somebody does not have balls several riders would be alive today.if you look it that way there would be no racing.changes dont happen overnight.things do get better and will but we still have to race.we racers do know there is risk involved regardless how safe track is and it will never be safe enough.

I know we play a dangerous game, and that people die under the best of circumstances. And I know that risk is a personal yardstick; what scares the crap out of some is routine for others.

But think of Jarno Saarinen, Larry Schwartzbach, Jamie Bowman, etc., who were all killed on tracks that simply weren't safe or under conditions that weren't - and track officials knew it at the time. Those, to me, are the tragedies that hurt the most; the ones where someone didn't have to die that day, and did because someone else failed in their duties to protect the riders.

That's why Danny's getting canned sucks. I've seen that man do many things over the years to make sure he minimizes the risk I personally face when I hit the track. Eliminate it? Impossible. But dammit, I'm safer at Willow with him, Kenny and Larry around than maybe any other track in the U.S.

Wed 11/24/04, 12:21AM
In my short racing career (over 7 years now) I have become less likely to be surprised by bad decisions made by officials. I have raced (watercraft) in strong undertow, ridiculous surf, sewage spills, high winds, storms including lightning, horrific fog, uncertain big boat traffic, on a dangerous race course with way too many other people that are quite as mad as I am. Races are rarely called off, and when they are, it is never for a reason as good as when they should have been. Also, hindsight is 20/20 and even considering the weather after we left Willow, I feel that the decision made by Danny was probably the best I've seen by any race director I've met (and I've crossed paths with a couple). If they had kept going, they might have gotten 10 races off before it started to get dark, but there was no way they would finish 18 races even with combining classes like was discussed.

Willow is not a track to clown around with, its what? the second fastest track in the nation? The fastest speeds are reached while knee on the ground... is this a track anybody wants to be riding without maximum grip? I was ready to pack it up after my race and then I came back to the trailer to find my crew had read my mind and the bike was the only thing they were waiting for to hit the road. Danny did the right thing and he threw his ass on the line for us. I think something needs to be done about this, Danny was doing his job so that we can make it back to ours.

Danny has always done an outstanding job with WSMC. On Sunday, despite chilling winds and gusts with rain/snow, blown motors down the front straight, turn 1 and turn 8 areas.. he had the crews working VERY hard to get everything back to a safe operational state to continue the races that day. He always kept an eye on the track, the sky, the riders and for his crew. He showed a professional character of calm and leadership in doing his very best to keep operations on track as safe as possible for the *CLUB* racers despite all the adverse conditions. I would hope that Mr. Huth would recognize Mr. Farnsworth's valiant efforts to keep the races going both for WSMC and for the racers. Heck, he even had cones placed out on the inside of turn 8 where they could not get all the oil cleaned up! So.. what the heck was Mr. Huth waiting to see before agreeing with Danny's decision to call the day? Was he waiting for cones set up inside turn 1 so you could only run a line on the outside 2 meters of turn 1 in the marbles? Was he waiting for another rider to go down and not have any more ambulances available to take him to the hospital? Was he waiting for one of his "customers" to die out there first before calling the day (sure it's a risk we all take as racers but there are better ways to die than to die cuz the track was already covered in gallons of oil in icy cold conditions with storms moving in)? Was he waiting for the snow to hit even harder? We could have sat there and waited til 4pm, have 2 races complete out of nearly 20.. put the day on hold the entire time! But considering the fact that Danny has already deployed nearly every means possible to keep the day going as safely as can be... I strongly believe that Danny Farnsworth made the right call for the racers AND for the organization. It would not look good for the organization if Danny were to force the issue and tell everyone that it was still *safe* to race over gallons of oil slicks, hundreds of pounds of grease sweep on the track, 40mph gusts, big storm fronts looming, freezing temps, snow, oil at the apex of some of the fastest turns on any racetrack in the country, etc. It freakin snowed in Temecula!! This was no ordinary day of bad weather..... even the roadracingworld.com offices recognized that while they were reporting conditions at WSMC and their own offices. With all the injuries, the number of ambulances that had to cart off all the fallen racers and the poor track and weather conditions... Danny.. you are my hero for doing the RIGHT THING!

On that note, I do agree that if it was part of Danny's job to notify the owner before cancelling the rest of the event due to safety concerns, Bill Huth has justification for being upset. But firing him over this seems rather absurd. Of course, no one really knows the whole story just yet.... RacR4JC
Thu 11/25/04, 1:03PM
Personally I think its a mistake of a track to be honest. The AMA course is awesome, second on my list (to Vegas Classic). The Infield configuration is really slown and technical. You need good forks and good traction. The cool thing is there is absolutely no rhythm unlike Willow. Making fast laps on the Infield is more work, but makes it easier for a guy like me that can ride fast but hasn't been around for a long time. It totally reduces the experience factor. I think it would be a cool motard track...a little on the fast side, but the turns are tight enough it would be fun on a motard. Avatar was taken @ Infield.

i'm thinking of switching tires. i'm running pirelli slicks right now. was thinking of the super corsas as an alternative, would save some money, around $350 a season. do they feel the same?

was thinking of going with a pair of dunlop slicks, rear 155/60/17 as it seems that the 160/55/17 is meant for a 5 inch rim. anyone run dunlop slicks? are there any race worthy DOTs from dunlop that fit the sv rear, didn't think there was? going with dunlop slicks would reduce my yearly tire budget by around $600. would it be worth it?

What about michelin, I know zoran runs those, what size? pilot h2, m2, s2...dot or slicks? stock rims?

anyone know where i can source some bridgestone slicks? I know that they make sizes for 250 gp which should work on the SV.

It isn't cheap. I eat through the rear faster then the front. I buy from Sport Tire Services because they are the only people that carry the 207gp. The rear is a 160, but it fits the rim really well. I can get edge to edge with this rubber. The rear goes for $196 I think after everything. I normally buy a front 208gp take off from them as well because they look new most of the time. I heard in May they will be coming out with a 209gp that will fit our bike! :groove:

 It isn't as narrow or have the triangular look that the 208gp has, but it sticks and it still turns in better then a pirelli. You will notice some headshake at first with the 208gp but then you get used to it. I like the tire you can feel everything. It isn't numb like a pirelli.

I put on Dunlop slicks last month and like them (155/60 rear). The front steers better than the Pirelli's. Bradley Adams has run Dunlop slicks the past couple of months. He uses 165/60's on his 5 inch rear rim. The next rear I buy is going to be the 165 Dunlop just to see what it's like. I heard after the Daytona 200 is run, Dunlop is going to come out with a 208GP in the 160/60 size.

Brienne Tomson runs Supercorsas. She has tried the Pirelli slicks, crashed on them and subsequently doesn't like them.

All DOT's have more give than slicks. Adjust suspension acordingly.

208, 209, whatever. I won't be using them. Why run DOT's in a superbike class?

RacR4JC
Wed 12/8/04, 9:33AM
thing I don't like about DOTs is that they roll the tread backwards, I'm guessing from hard downshifting and engine braking. this tears up the middle of the tire and I would think hurt turn-in, as well as wear out faster. haven't noticed a huge difference in grip between DOTs and slicks, but I would pick a slick over DOT any day just because of its strict racing design where the DOT has to loosely conform to street standards and for them to update the design of a DOT, it requires more money, which means the slicks get all the new development, quicker. the 160 pirell slick was updated recently and I got a revised rear which was noticeably different and didn't cup as much toward the edges as the old tire, but getting your hands on one is a task. I say if running superbike, get an F3 rear wheel and run the supermoto/250gp 165s

what carb set-up are you pre-03 sver's using at willow?

I'm still running 138's, 2 1/2 turns, dynojet needle on #3 groove with a full yosh and desnorkeled stocker.

worked well enough during the summer with the heat.

what's willow's altitude anyway? Like 2500'?

was thinking of changing to 140 now that it's cold. I don't know seems like going from 110 to 40-50 degrees might make an impact on the A/F mixture

Zoran, you out there, wanna chime in?

How much does a run on Lou's dino cost? It would probably be appropriate for me to do a run on the dino before I take my bike apart on Saturday, then do another run on it after I get it back together.

Well, last race weekend, I was unloading the bike and it started to tip over. The tie-down was still attached to the fork leg on my side and I grabbed the bar with my right hand and just instinctively grabbed the steering damper with my left hand.

The tie-down tightened up when the bike tipped, steering went full right, steering damper smashed 2 fingers. Stripped the skin off the inside of one finger about 1 square inch, stripped the skin and tore the nail out on the other. Too much skin was gone for stitches so I had to go for skin grafts.

Now I have a plastic thingy stitched into where the nail was and shoved back up underneath the cuticle and stitched in place. This is so it won't heal shut before the nail grows back out. The stitches have to stay in until the nail comes out - maybe another month.

Crashing sucks but crashing ON THE TRAILER??? Geeeez!

Maybe I'll take a picture of the nail. See if any of the ladies want to use my manicurist. :D

The place where the skin was grafted - didn't know that he'd peel it off after just 2 weeks

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/403336/Finger2.jpg

The doc stitched the tip of the other finger closed then shoved this plastic piece up under the cuticle and then tacked it back under it with a couple stitches and one stitch at the tip to hold the thing down. The stitches have to stay in for maybe another month

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-9/403336/Finger1.jpg

Doesn't really hurt but if I catch an edge of the plastic in the glove, it will tear. The doc thinks I might be able to use a cut-off rubber glove fingertip over the top of the plastic piece and then slide it into the race glove - that's what we're going to look at next Wednesday

It was funny in a weird way. I washed off the bleeding fingers, fixed a cracked fairing with white ductape, washed the blood off the bike - wrapped the fingers up with sticky gauze and rode the bike up to tech inspection. The inspector is walking around looking at the bike while my 2 fingers are just bleeding through the gauze and dripping onto the pavement. He told me "I'll pass your bike but I'm not letting YOU on the track unless the paramedics tell me you're good to go" I go over to the paramedics, they re- wash and re-bandage the fingers and say they're going to tell Tech that I'm not to be allowed onto the track UNLESS I come back with a doctor's approval... so away I go.

One BIG thing I learned - NEVER use peroxide in an open wound!!! It destroys ALL cells - healthy and otherwise. Use water - or sterile saline if you have it. Saline is prescription (go figure - there's gotta be a big black market in saline... "pssst buddy, wanna buy a kilo of salt water?"):D But you can get your doctor to get you a prescription the next time you go in - just so you can have some in your first aid kit.

ALSO- Xeroform (tm) gauze pads!!! If any of you are as wimpy as I am about tearing open fresh wounds when you peel gauze off when changing bandages, get Xeroform gauze and put it in your first aid kit. Perfect for dressing wounds such as abrasions/raspberres, open wounds, burns - any wound you will have to be changing dressings more than once. This is a petroleum jelly and antibacterial loose gauze that DOESN'T STICK to the wound if you put on 2-3 layers!!! Good stuff. It made changing the dressings twice a day a tolerable thing.

Yeah - I'll most likely come out to be pit beyotch for a couple buddies doing New Racer School.

The doc is going to give me some taping-up instructions on the plastic finger IF he thinks it has healed well enough to put in a glove. He'll trim the plastic insert smaller to fit the glove better (he said I should have told him ahead of time that I was going to want to slide it into a glove - he'd have trimmed it smaller to start with)

The graft on the other finger is already healed and flexible enough to get full motion - it's that fingernail that is kinda fragile.

Might just be on my butt for another month but I'll come out to play one way or another. Living close has advantages.

Put it in a rubber glove to keep from snagging the stitches and it goes into the motorcycle glove really nicely.

There was a lady on a 125 in lightweight novice that was kicking ass - she'd have cleaned the leader's clock - but he was on a 250. She'd get him in the turns, he'd out pull her on power on the straight.

Watta great weekend!

Kurt and Kenny are getting seriously quick out there!

I can't really do justice to a race report (especially since the SV is still on the disabled list) - missing most of the last 6 months has seriously taken a toll on my lap times!

No shat! That's cool that Harley of Glendale picked up MWT 'cause that has seemed to give an influx of bikes to that class. Too bad those 883's and XB12's are faster in the straights than the SV (fortunately most of those guys didn't seemed to know how to take turn 9 very well, though).

None of the fast people were out there for 550SB this month so Kenny and I tore it up (he tore it up just a bit more than I did and got the win).

Having the transponders is cool 'cause when they post your fastest lap time of the race, there can't be any more BS about how fast you are. My fastest time in 550 was a 1.33.16 and in MWT I did a 1.32.96.

And thanks for taking those picks, Zack. It's weird to see green stuff on the ground out there. Makes it looks like the track isn't out in the middle of a barren desert.

HOW ABOUT THAT BRADLEY ADAMS!!

I loaned him my SV one weekend last year when I couldn't race and I stopped by to ask how he's adapting to the TZ 250 - he said that it's taking some getting used to.

THEN he goes out and comes in SECOND in his first-ever race on it! He was turning low 1:26 laps!

What's gonna happen when he "gets used to" the bike?

Funny - the other race organizations won't let him ride a bike bigger than 500cc because of his age - so he can only run the SV at willow... so they go out and get a bike with 15 more HP and 100 pounds lighter!!!

GO BRADLEY ADAMS!=D> :worthy:

You can hang in the pits, really check out what's being done.

For the price of a Friday night movie ($10) - you get "Access All Areas" for a weekend.

And Shandra, you're right - I gotta get the SV out and scooting again! I just picked up a set of Gixxer race bodywork and when I get some time, I gotta pull the forks to check for straightness - then it's "some assembly required!"

Have you met Jane Schwartzkopf yet? She's another Nervice L/W Fizzer racer. We were up in the stands and she's asking: "who's the new chick on the Fizzer?" (she's missed the last 5-6 races because of mechanical or schedule problems)

Hey, did any of you notice the lack of grip out there? The track was a bit dirty in places, but I guess the lack of laid down rubber was the culprit. Coming out of 9 I felt like I was on ice, especially by the end of the MWT race because I had totally used up the right side of my rear tire. I had the thing wanting to swap ends on me in 4b on the 6th lap. Never had that happen before. It was like hitting a patch of mud on a dirt bike. Turn 8 really F'ed up my tires. Both the front and rear had ripples on them like the tire was burned. I slid all the way around 2 as well. Sure made it exciting.

I'm expecting it NOT to rain on Sunday. Shandra will be out there for Friday practice if the rain continues to hold off.

I'm heading out tomorrow.

If it does turn to shit, Shandra can get her cornerworker duty out of the way and not waste a good day later.

If I punt the day tomorrow, I'll just roll the carryover into another race on Sunday - take 3 Twins races and F-50

I've been sideways on Diablo Corsa in the rain on the street so know they're traction-limited in WET but do pretty well in spotty track conditions.

That being said, I'm loading slicks onto the wheels tomorrow... maybe Diablo Corsa on the second set of wheels.

I couldn't make it this weekend :(

from the wsmc board about steve-he apparently highsided in 1 & got hit by his bike:

First off I'm not Slaughter but the lady with the newest facts.

Steve does have a broken collar bone and two back ribs. The "CAT" scan showed bleeding in the brain. Steve is being held over night for observation and another "CAT" scan in the morning. If things look stable Steve will be released tomorrow.

Thanks to all that came to the hospital to show their support. It is deeply appreicated. Thanks to for all the prayers.

I will post again when I get more information.

Sunny

Crap, didn't know Steve got hurt that bad. Hope he recovers okay.

No race report from me this month. Before I could complete 3 turns in the first warm-up session, I fell down - hurt myself. I even had rain tires on, but I guess they gave me too much confidence. Good thing I know how to relocate my shoulder by myself, 'cause the ambulance people weren't going to touch me.

Shaggy kicked ass in MWN. Jiggy had some nice passes in 8. He passed two people at once on the second lap.

Thanks for helping me with putting my shoulder back in socket the second time I dislocated it yesterday, Jiggy.

Please let us know how Steve is progressing; and ya know, I think the FIRST shoulder separation of the day is a warning sign from the universe ...:D

Hope you're feeling better, Kurt.

How's the bike?

The bike is actually okay because I was going so slow when I fell over. The only thing I would have needed to put back on the bike to race was a left rearset bracket. The peg and the shift lever survived the crash, and I got those pieces back a few hours later (thanks, crashtruck guys). The wind screen broke, but I'll just put the stock one back on there because that double-bubble wasn't worth $50. I will have to dump a couple hundred bucks into buying new tail plastics. The stock stuff shattered pretty good. Though I will be putting up my Targa seat cowl and Burst undertail in the for sale section next week. :)

any word on steve?

Here's the deal:

I finished Formula Twins in the ambulance at AVHMC

Subdural hematoma - kept me in ICU for 2 days being woken up every hour to check brain function. Followed by one day in Critical Care unit - released on day 4. If it had gotten worse, they'd have had to open my skull. They can't do any other surgery until most of the subdural hematoma gets reabsorbed.

In addition to the alien life form implanted and living in my head:

Broken left ankle - Talus - not displaced, splinted.
Broken left Collarbone
2 cracked ribs where they join my spine between the shoulder bades
2 chipped vertebra

I can't remember anything from the time I put on my gloves until I was loaded into the ambulance - so the following is from talking to folks in the stands and Johnny (749 Duc) - who was behind me when it happened. I was 3rd going into T1 and was sliding to the outside exiting 1. johnny said it looked like a controlled slide until I ran out of track, rolled off to avoid sliding off - the bike hooked up and I executed a perfect "Flying Gumby" hi-side. Johnny was pretty cool - called me in the hospital - he thought he may have hit me after I came off (I don't think so - I think the rubber on my helmet is from my own bike)

The bike pounded me into the mud. Side case broke my Arai helmet and I think either the footpeg or swing-arm slider took out the collarbone. Brain and back injury were likely from the bike landing on top of me.

I'll be out of racing at least 2 months - probably more due to medical $$$.

I've got good insurance that allows me to see any specialist without BS - BUT I may have to pick-up the differences in what they charge and what Aetna pays. Oh well... might mean more debt but the main thing is that I'll be getting good care. That was a decision I consciously made when getting the insurance so while I can get good care, it might mean missing a whole lot more racing than I'd like

All for now - 1-hand typing is a pain but I'm stuck at home, BORED

Steve,

Sorry to hear about the crash and the aftermath. Take care of those injuries, particularly the bump on the head. Concussions (and subdural bleeds  ) are serious things. You might want to avoid activities that have a high risk of head impact, since the effects of successive head injuries are multiplied (ask Muhammad Ali about that...).

Heal up fast!

Yeah - that was something I kidded the neurologist about - my day job has me beating my head against a wall so many times that maybe they'll cut me some slack.

Yes - the subdural bleed is a truly bad thing.

Hey - who said anything about old??

Do I detect an age-ist remark???

I'm turning you over to the board op!

(and yeah, I wonder how many licensed racers are also card-carrying AARP members?)

I once got a chance to observe the surgery they do for increased intracerebral pressure. There's a special drill that stops once you get through the skull. Then they put a shunt in to drain off the extra fluid that's causing the pressure increase. I started wearing my bicycle helmet all the time after seeing that (this was pre-motorcycling for me).

For hematomas, a more invasive approach is sometimes needed if the bleeding doesn't stop or the hematoma is large (they have to make a big hole in the skull and dura, remove the clot, find the bleeder and clamp/cauterize/suture it). Not good.

From the sound of it, you're en route to recovery, which is great news.
