Man, you picked a shitty weekend to start racing weather wise. I'll be up Sunday morning. You won't want/need an awning this weekend as it'll be cold and overcast the whole time.

Monsterdood
Thu 12/14/06, 7:26PM
You'll want an awning up if it is raining or snowing. Try the WSMC board too for pit help if you don't get any bites around here... no matter what, there will be someone to help you out for sure, always is....

What's going on this weekend at Willow?

Uh . . . the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club races, just like every month. That's where we all race. We don't just put numbers on our bikes to look cool at track days.

Weather report is looking better for this weekend. Less chance of rain now.

We are having a Saturday Night Christmas party in our pits. If you come out to the track, come on down to the Turn 1 area... yeah, some of us are now on Buells but it's free food. Tri Tip, beans, cole slaw - usual BBQ stuff.

Come on down - we have more stuff than we'll have people to eat it.

OH!!!! So you guys do some racing do ya? And I thought you guys were tryin' to trick your bikes up a little by sticking some shitty numbers on them!

What do the #'s give you...like an extra 10 horses?:D

It's all in the wrist, baby. The short, quick, repetitive stroke of the hand ... I mean, uh ...

I swear to God, I hate weather forecasters. To quote one of my best friends, these fuckers can't predict dark. It'll probably be 85 degrees on Sunday, with the occasional tornado ...

My first-ever arrest came after lighting up a number at high school in 1970. Didn't make me any faster but it sure could smooth out the rough edges of a day.

Cold day out at the track. Didn't wish I was racing as I stood in the stands.

Codzilla made a good return to racing. Didn't crash and took home some wood.

The lap records in both "SV" classes were obliterated by this guy named Stuart Smith. He's a California Superbike School instructor and sometimes club racer. He went out on a Kawi 650R, superbike spec (mid 80's horse power), and ran fuckin' '27s! His fastest lap of the day was a 1:27.3. Holy Fuck!!!

J.Moto
Sun 12/17/06, 5:59PM
You should have told him you're the champion and that he needs to slow the fuck down!

:D

Monsterdood
Sun 12/17/06, 7:02PM
Yeah, Stuart finished pretty well in the Toyota 200 and he can be seen on Superbikers teaching the host Rossi how to wheelie in the Keith Code On One Wheel school....

In 550 SBK, I could not believe how fast he came around everyone on the outside of turn 1. I was in 3rd or so and it was like we are all used to going a certain speed through 1 off the start and he wasn't used to this class so he simply went faster.

That pretty much settles the question of how competitive the ninja 650 can be.... Others have ridden it fast, but a 1:27.3!!!! Insane....

steveb
Sun 12/17/06, 7:16PM
I asked Stuman if he would be riding the Kwacker 650 in next years T-200 - I cannot describe the expression on his face, but he said something about wanting to go out and get into the 26's next race.

morbidelli17
Sun 12/17/06, 8:09PM
Someone should have told him the track was slow today. Bastard ...

:D

Slaughter
Mon 12/18/06, 4:35AM
Stuman is gonna be scarey when he's on that bike on a "GOOD" track! Setting lap records on a windy, cold track? Look out Solo Series, look out 550 Superbike, look out Formula Twins Light.

Wonder if he'll be racing them next season? He said nothing other than he's just working with the bike for Kevin Jump (Advanced Kawasaki)

All you no-shows on Saturday night missed some eats! We had about 5-6 pounds of tri-tip and about a million calories of cookies and cake leftover for Sunday lunch!

Actually, as freaking c-c-c-cold as it was on Saturday and since it was raining Saturday night, staying home on Saturday made good sense.

Kurt'sSV
Mon 12/18/06, 8:54AM
Yeah, I don't believe Smith is going to run that bike full time next year. I don't think he cares about winning 550sbk or F-twins LW. He may come out on it again to better his own lap records.

I see that Shandra didn't finish the Formula Twins Lightweight. You still around Shandra? What happened? I see some dude named Stuart Smith was kicking ass out there. Ran a 1:27:3 in the 550 Superbike and broke the lap records in that class as well as the FLWT class.

Shandra's bike had electrical problems.

Cool pics Kurt. Who is the 883 rider? He has the same white boots and red leathers as you but different number. He has a mean lean on T5 there. I would like to get out there someday and do some racing. Have to get my liscense one of these weekends.

Wed 12/20/06, 9:57AM
883 is a guy named Jeff Dixon. He's pretty fast on that Buell. Though the guy who won the 550sbk race on the 650R turned lap times over a second quicker.

Absolutely correct... I was right behind this poor fellow when he decided to do his best superman impression, then his bike proceeded to ghost ride almost all the way to the budwieser balcony.

Seconds later in turn five someone lowsided, looked like he was ok too. All of this took place on the first lap of the novice race, but things settled down quickly once we spread out a little.

With the chaos and mayhem at a dull roar I ended up spending the rest of my time dicing it up with a kawasaki 636, usually getting him in 2 and 9, then he would pass me back on the front and back straits. It was kinda fun messing with a 600 on a stock SV:D

I have a 2nd gen 04. I bought from Steve Barbuska, (Animal) We installed 04-05 GSXR 750 forks and a penske shock, then I had Dave Moss from Catalys Reaction respring the forks and set up the bike. Zoran gave me some numbers for setting up the penske. Other than that it is completely stock... just suspension and safety wire.

Ah, novice races. I saw pile-ups in T1, people get run over, multiple bikes laying on track, multiple bikes cartwheeling in turn 8 and one guy get drug along by his bike all the way to the wall outside turn 4.

That's not to say the experts don't crash. I seem to recall this one guy needing a helmet after a nasty little spill in T2. I also recall popping this guys shoulder back into place. :D I don't think those days have passed you by yet, Kurt. ;)

Damn I love race trash talking! And YES, we do need a track in LA or San Diego. Lots of room by the border with Mexico here. Theres talk of moving the airport there, but a there would be lots of room for the track still. And with an International airport there, no one could complain about track noise, unlike Seca.

SilverRider
Thu 12/21/06, 10:53AM
Sounds like Lloyd might be deployed somewhere in the tropics. Am I right? And if they move the airport out east here in SD why not replace the airport with a track? Right in the middle of SD. A track doesn't make much more noise than those damn jets landing and taking off every couple of minutes. Wishful thinking. I was all stoked when I heard about that Riverside race track park. Too bad it isn't in Riverside but rather far away from here.

We'll be (FINALLY) out.

Warm up the motors BEFORE cranking!

We're bringing an electric heater to warm the motor and oil lines.

Remember what happened when people didn't warm up the bikes before - blown oil filter bodies and oil filter gaskets and multiple bike crashes in the oil:

My thoughts from the award banquet:

- Damn, the Top Rookie Expert trophies are a LOT nicer than when I won one.

- Zoran's name came up at the award banquet a lot last night.

- For a guy who wasn't planning to say anything, we couldn't get Kurt to shut up.

- No matter how old you are, huffing helium from balloons is always a good idea.

- Andy had GREAT hair.

- Here's who I had dinner with, Shandra, Amy Hronek, and ZenSandy; the announcer, over the P.A., from the stage, thanked ZenSandy for wearing the PVC ball gown.

Life is good. Good to see everyone again.

And I'll be up loading pics from the races to my photo album. (not as exciting as Sandy's)

Very cool Shandra, Amy, and Zen-Sandy.

Well....

taking the day off work today to get the little beastie all readied up.

Last month was a bust with the dyno committing suicide when we got on to re-map and when I went out on Friday, it was un-workable.

This month I'm finally coming back out to play. Been 2 long years.

I'll be the loud, slow dude in the back of all the packs.

what a great day!
to recap-a little bit of carnage in the 1st 2 laps of 550 sbk-4 lap sprint restart race-sv's taking all the good spots :D

formula twins ltwt-why did they grid the F-2 race in front of us? in an 8 lap race, it will be no fun with 600's swiss cheesing our wave...next month i'm gonna put a banana in kevin jump's pipe on the grid :D otherwise it was on like donkey kong baby & a whole lotta fun.

codzilla-holy crap have you gotten fast! you go w'it your bad self.

dominus-nice come back & fun to dice it up w/you & subdiver (next month, the red helmet of doom, part deux)

subdiver-i need bigger nutz to tag on to you & bryan in t2, therefore, next month i am taking the almonds off my tank & taping on walnuts :D

slaughter-very good to see you back out there-you were looking good. hopefully the mule behaved itself for you.

morbidelli-#29 is behind you & he's waving...

kurtsSV-you & cody look like twins on the track.

now there are 5 red bikes on the grid- maybe we can confuse team yellow the next time they come down :D

Heck - I might even write a race report!

It truly was good being back out racing again after 2 years that started with morphine, neurologists, orthopedic specialists, a wheel chair, a hospital bed at home... and missing 4 months of work got pretty boring (never thought I'd say that)

This racing thing IS a kick-ass form of fun - even from the DFL position.

Yeah, I'll prolly do a race report. Been a long two years -

I'm already looking forward to next month. Last year I was always a bit wound up because I was afraid of performing poorly, finishing off the podium, and putting my lead in jeapardy. Now, however, I can't go backwards anymore than I have so it's fun to know that the next month all you can do is improve. I'm glad I had that epiphony about turn 6 and don't have to be afraid of it anymore.

Here's a pic of our pitts. Cody and Simi are behind Cody's white bike and the blurry guy in the back ground next to the 955 SV is a new guy named Matt. He did really well in his second novice race. And my bike has freshly repainted (pink?) fairings.

This is what an 06 R6 looks like after meeting the ground at turn 4. Spencer's not only a skilled rider, but crasher as well. Notice that the only damage to the bike is a scuffed lower fairing and smushed exhaust can. Spencer raced it on Sunday and did well considering it's his first time racing a 600. He got into the 27's. Jay raced it in F2 as well just for fun and he did 28's on it. Stock motor, too.

I too had a great weekend.

Best parts were watching Slaughter getting his groove on, and James, the guy I sold my last years MZ660 to dropped his best ever time by a ton and beat me in the F-Singles race.

Don't know if James ever gets on here, but rode a fixed up Blast last year but seemed uninspired on the bike. I talked him into buying my bike and the transformation is incredible. That makes me really happy. He turned a 1:43 with about 42 rwhp.

In the 660 singles race where there usually isn't much competition- by that I mean the five of us are usually spaced out along each of the five corners of the track with the KTM so far out ahead I never see him after T-3, and LC on his built Ascot way ahead too.

Well, this month, James passed me off the start in T-2, then Larry Cochran the race director on his 500 vintage Ascot (his big Ascot broke earlier) passed me shortly thereafter, and these guys lead me for the first two laps. I know, I'm old, I'm slow, and I suck, but they just disappear ahead of me and I'm about to just quit racing altogether what with other factors in my life right now.

And my lap timer has all zeros and I can't tell much on how I'm doing what with no tack or speedo so I'm just - shit!

But wait, I can see someone ahead of me at the end of the straightaway, I'm getting closer, closer, closer, gotya LC. That was kinda fun although LC is on a 500 and I have a way faster bike, but look ahead it's my old bike and it's getting closer, closer, closer, eeek, you're going way to slow into T-3, gaaatcha too on the outside, and I'm feeling good, comfortable and looking at my lap timer to see all the zeros, but things are well under control and I'm riding with a good safety margin, and wait, there's another bike ahead from the first wave and I pass him on the last lap. I turned my best ever lap on a 660 single with my last three laps of 1:42, 1:41.9, 1:42.

I just might be able to make it out to race next month. :D

And if things keep improving, I'll give a big fast bike like the SV650 another try. That's if I can find the "walnuts" to ride it fast enough.

Thanks Mike. After my T-2 get off in October, I never got back to speed until my third race yesterday. I have so much fun just riding around I forget it's really a race to be the fastest.

Chris,

Well now, "A day with TRE Dude" sounds cool.

How much is your going rate for a 1/2 day now that you're famous?

Kenny was excellent to ride with, but that was at the streets. A ride with the TRE would be an excellent addition to my education.

Okay, how about this?

The upcoming "Ride with the TRE" program is going to be awesome.... It fills the gap between New racers school and the Advanced Racers Clinic (or Ride with a Champ) for those running in the 1:38 - 1:45 range and looking to ride faster with more comfort and more margin.

People with big bikes and fast times don't always remember the hurdles "normal" riders are having to overcome. On a 60 HP bike, the lines and issues are a little different than on a 120 HP bike....

Introductory pricing:

- 1/2 day (3-4 sessions) is $50

- Add video of you to review at the track $30

- Time Bonus fee is $20 if in the sessions or in your next race weekend you drop 1 second off your recent times and $40 if you drop 2 seconds off your recent lap times.

If you don't get faster, I don't get paid... :)

First you must demonstrate you have a working bike and then we can talk schedule! Maybe you can be one of the guest instructors :)

Seriously though, whenever I go to the fast guys for advice, I get advice that applies to guys that are really fast already. I suspect paying Kenny the $350 to ride for a day with him would be the best training around, but for a lower price there really isn't a mid-pack racers clinic for those of us in the 1:35 - 1:45 range....

The only problem I see with you taking this class is that the instructor wouldn't be able to keep up with the student. :)

How a person racing an SV gets from doing 1:40 lap times to '32s or so is simply getting more comfortable with riding the bike. (Assuming set-up isn't an issue, which it almost never is for us - we have Zoran. Except Cody, he always seems to have set-up issues because he only uses Zoran for motor, not suspension.) Everyone else I see on SV's during practice has good form and rides good lines. They know how to ride a motorcycle, they just aren't as comfortable with going as fast, yet, but the more they ride, the more comfortable they will get.

Seriously, just keep your eyes up. Look FAR! Especially in 8 and 9. Find reference points. If you don't have some, find some. To find some you'll need to ride around a little slower, so play putt-putt in the first practice session of the morning and look for stuff. That's really the most important part to getting around a race track: 1) Look where you're going, not where you're at and 2) know where you are on the track.

Then really to go from 32's to 29's there isn't too much more involved. You just have to get more and more comfortable with the bike and be relaxed when riding it. When you're comfortable you're okay with the bike moving around, etc.

Oh, and having a lot of horse power helps.

Good advice MonsterDude and Kurt. Really, seriously very good advice.

KK was great to ride with and I recommend him to anyone! I had food poisoning from the night b4 and got there sick, went home, then came back in the afternoon not feeling too crisp, but KK stuck with me and coached to my level and answered every question I had. Very cool guy with tons of knowledge and really helpful. But it was at the streets, sigh. KK uses full legal release of responsibility, etc.

Adv Racers Clinic was way over my head

And I would do the "ride with the TRE" in an unofficial capacity with vidige (I like that word) in exchange for something which wouldn't get you in trouble with the track. Absolutely. PM me if you are serious because I am sure you could help me a lot.

Tom, did you ever get knobbies on your SV? I really like seeing you race, and you certainly have the balls to go fast.

I think Slaughter is a good example of coming back after a crash. He's smooth and comfortable running about 4 seconds slower than when he last raced. His smile? Priceless!

I've been asked by Jane Schwartzkopf and Ken Ryder to perform their marriage ceremony for them next race weekend Saturday April 14th after the Solo races!

Since none of us is religious, they're writing up their own vows and asked me to go get sworn in to perform the ceremony - and we're kind of winging the ceremony - trying for a parade lap if we can get permission.

Reception is going to be a BBQ on the front straight with a live DJ - Jeff Dixon, one of the points leaders in Middleweight Twins also has a DJ gig with a whole mobile setup.

Gonna be FUN - Saturday after the racing,

BE THERE

Watch Father Slaughter in action!

I'm only authorized to perform one marriage however if any ladies have any particularly NASTY things to confess, I'm willing to listen.

The OFFICIAL wedding invitation:

Jane Schwartzkopf (# 678) and Ken Ryder (#750) cordially invite all WSMC racers, crew members, staff and friends to their wedding taking place following Saturday night’s SOLO races in the HOT PIT Lane.

The civil ceremony will be conducted by Steve Slaughter (WSMC 604) with running commentary provided by, who else? David Koenig!

Immediately following the ceremony, riders are invited to join the newlywed couple in a cerimonial parade lap around the Historic Willow Springs Track.

Following the ceremony will be a reception with burgers provided by the bride and groom. Music will be provided by WSMC 883 - Disk Jockey Jeff “Slipp” Dixon.

Jane and Ken requested that ALL riders come to the ceremony in their leathers.

Note: the parade lap does NOT require race gear or tech inspection BUT you must have a helmet and common sense riding protective gear. RACERS are requested to ride in their leathers.

NOTE: this is a Civil Ceremony. I'm deputized to perform a CIVIL ceremony - I AM NOT ORDAINED!!! (there's been some confusion about a religious conversion but the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't ordain anybody)

it's always fun to see brant on the grid on an sv-and to be really honest, he, stuman, kevin, the yellow bikes (when they come down for a visit) truly are on different experience level than the rest of us. they're the ones that can ride the wheels off the sv with not much effort.

however, that in no way dimishes what the rest of the grid is doing. cody & sp8s ran REALLY good this weekend, and everybody else really stepped up the pace too. for our combined levels of exeprience, that ain't shabby...
