Although this construction project (http://www.rmwd.org/project_update.htm) isn't on the truly fun part of Old Julian Highway, it does affect the west end connector of the road from Ramona.

BOO!
At least it doesn't affect the twisties at all, but it will suck to try to get to them now...

Yep, the part of the road undergoing construction is already sketchy at best. Adding steel plates and gravel and bad asphalt patches, etc., will make it an attention-getter.

Just wondering if anyone's been down here since they started the construction?
I decided to pass it up on my ride today since I didn't know how chewed up the apprach roads were...
Thanks :)

Big, nasty steel plates in the lane heading into Ramona, and the usual crappy asphalt in the other lane. During the week days, the road is one lane only, and the delays can be a bit long. There is no construction work on the weekends so it's back to two lanes, yet one still has to deal with the steel plates and even rougher surfaces chewed up by heavy equipment. On the plus side, though, it's only about 1/2 - one mile of ickiness to navigate.

Super... we'll be going right through here for the gathering ride.

Why do people boo whenever there's construction improvement on one of the many unsafe twisty mountain roads out here?

Jeff, it this was a road improvement, I'd be dancing a jig on my desk. But it's merely a project to sink a big ole water pipe in the road without addressing the existing shortcomings of the path. The RMWD has no plans to resurface and widen the road as a result of their pipeline work.
On a positive note, so far the construction hasn't added too much drama to the road for weekend riders. Steel plates here and there, some gravel, some uneven surfaces, but that's about it. During the weekdays, though, it is limited to a single lane with traffic control which is more of an inconvenience than a safety issue.

And when they're just digging up part of the roadway they leave a nasty, bumpy, uneven surface. If they were resurfacing the whole road, then great.
There's a spot I used to have to go over on Scripts Poway on the way to work where they laid some pipe straight across the road. The pavement patch they left was a big bump in the road. First time I hit it I was almost bounced off my seat.

I went through this part on sunday and one lane is fine except for the usual cracks and dips. The other side is lined with huge steel plates with gaps inbetween and the ocasional drop of the 3 inches or so in two or three spaces. Sucks buts it's only for a short time for now

As long as you do it from west to east, you don't ride on the plates at all. Rode over them last Friday though and its no big deal. Just wouldn't run over them at high speed leaned over during a rain storm.
