First of all, I have a bone to pick with everyone who races in 550 superbike. I take a couple months off to fix my bike and you guys slow down to the mid 32's, then I come back and suddenly everyones running their best times ever (kurt!) and there was even a 29 thrown in to rub it in!
OK, now that I got that off my chest, I had a great weekend in the 111 degree heat (that's my lucky number). I was hoping to help Morbidelli17 get his EX together but we would have need a young priest an old priest... you get the picture. He had a ball on the new bike and has an awesome attitude about the whole thing. I got to help a few racers in need, and tuned Brandt Wiwi's new ZX6RR suspension all day Saturday after some good practice laps in the cool morning sessions. I was running low 32's just behind Kurt, so I thought I was at least in the game.
So Sunday morning rolls around and 550 sbk was race one and I was gridded 5th behind and between Kurt and Martinez. I got the jump, and rolled into T1 in the lead. After a decent first lap I got a bad drive out of T9 and Kurt and Tim caught me before T1. This is where it all gets fuzzy for me, because I slipped into a zone and I just knew in my heart that I was going to win, I don't remember where I got around Kurt, but I remember looking down at my lap timer at crossed flags (half way) and we were running 30 flat. I said to myself "jeez! I'm going to have to run a 29 to get Tim!" but I got a good draft on the front straight and passed him on the right at the white flag. The problem was, when I pulled out of the draft behind him he was sucked over into me and I went off in the dirt at almost 150 mph! The 1 thought that went across my mind was "I wonder how my new Kushitani suit is going to do" luckily I leaned myself back on the track and finished the pass and led Tim into T1.
I ran probably my best time ever on an SV to finish the last lap and even with a backmarker that held us up at the top of the hill I ran a 30.5 to take my first ever expert win. Thanks to all my friends and family who have dragged their butts up to watch me rain or shine for 3 years, I hope you enjoyed the show, I sure did!:D
