Rode up to Julian today taking my usual route through Ramona. After stopping for pie, I decided to ride down the 79 to Sunrise Hwy.

Well, they are repaving the 79 from julian (starting at the turnoff by the gas station), and working their way south. I turned off at Sunrise Hwy, but they had crews farther on down the road from the looks of it.

They're doing the good ol' fashion gravel over tar method, so the whole road is a bit slick with loose gravel all over the place. They had traffic stopped at one point - immediately after a blind corner  - and as I got on the brakes I could feel the tires sliding a bit on the slick surface.

Looks like this might be going on at least through the weekend if not longer, so if anyone's planning on heading out to the 79 between the 8 and Julian, be careful and take it easy on the new surface...

I recommend Sunrise Hwy as an excellent detour :D

It stinks...literally. The smell of road tar or whatever the substance is rather nauseates me. That was reason enough to take Sunrise Highway on Sunday versus continuing through Cuyamaca. Although everyone going through that section was keeping a moderate pace, lots of little rocks were picked up and hurled by tires so you may want to use an older shield on your helmet if you're going out that way.

I'm generally not opposed to the smell of gasoline, but that tar did STINK!
