View Full Version : Headlight Modulator Installation

Hey everyone,
I just received my Diamond Star headlight and taillight modulators yesterday and would like to install them tomorrow. I just have a few questions:
1) The taillight modulator looks simple enough to install, just need to splice it into the positive wire for the brake light circuit. Since there are two brake lights, should I just splice them together to run through the modulator?
2) I think I may need to remove the front fairings and instrument cluster surround to mount the modulator and do all the wiring. Do I just remove all the allen bolts around the fairing? what about the mirrors, do they need to come off?
3) Where to mount the light sensor? It says it should point down towards the ground. Does this mean it should be mounted in the center fairing?
Once I'm under the fairings I should be fine. The wiring schematics are pretty straightforward. I'd appreciate any advice since all I've done so far is change the exhaust and air filter, so I'm still getting used to the bike.
Thanks,
Aaron

1) Yes there are two brake lights, but if you look closely the "bike-side" of the plug only has one set of wires. The light-side has a pair of each coming out. So, simple solution, splice on the "bike-side" of the plug.
2) Mirrors do need to come off. Remove the right and left sides of the fairing, that will expose the rest of the bolts that hold the center piece on.
3) Mount the sensor anywhere where it will have a unobstructed "view" of the road surface. Just be sure that it will not be damaged by anything as a result of the mounting location. Keep in mind, sensors and such do not like heat very much, nor do they like being hit by rocks and road debris....
good luck and let us know how you like your new goodies!

And which one would that be? I'm pretty sure its either orange or white with the black trail (black with white trail looks like its probably ground)...
And what wires am I going to splice my dual headlight modulator into? Anyone got a wiring diagram? The one in chap 7 of the service manual doesn't seem to cut it.

How about the wiring diagram in Chap 8?

Not sure exactly which one it is, I'd have to look at the bike which is at home right now. I just looked at the wiring diagram in the SV manual for the colors. Same goes for the front. The SVS wires are the same colors as the SV wires, they just split off to power each headlight. I spliced in before the split, so I didn't need the dual wiring kit (bought it before I found this out).
If you still need help, let me know and I can look up the wiring colors, but I just stared at the diagrams for a few minutes.

Yeah, that did it... I expected to find that in "electrical"...
Now to figure out how to remove the fairings so I can get the headlight modulators working.

h4. We have some great threads on headlights... just search the forum.

I installed my modulators today... They don't trigger when I hit the horn, and the light sensor doesn't work if it sees a shadow or asphault (works fine in a well lit driveway, though)...
I think I'm less than impressed so far.
Golden,
I love my modulator, and have had no problems with it...
So, about your horn trigger: which wire did you use to wire up the horn? Our horn requires the purple lead, and I ran that lead back under the tank and down to the horn where I t-spliced it right at the horn.
The light sensor is indeed sensitive to road color. When I first installed my modulator, my SV was naked and I just drilled a hole in the bottom of the HL bucket. That caused the sensor to trigger off of my fender and be much more consistent to ambient light. When I installed my Targe 1/4 fairing, I moved the sensor out and zip-tied it to my brake line, pointed at the road; now it is more sensitive to road color and shadows. I just ignore it. In fact, since my high-beam indicator failed, I can hardly tell. ;) If it bothers you, move it so it's pointed at your fender. or just aim it at the sky. Oh, the glue on mine failed and the sensor slid back into the housing a bit. This reduced it's light gathering. I just made sure it was pushed in all the way and dropped a dot of hot glue on it.
That's about all I can offer. My modulator has worked great rain or shine. I have the brake light modulator too.
Later,
Tim.

Ya, used the purple. When it didn't work (and we tried recrimping it a couple times) we hooked up the green to test it. Flashed like crazy. Plug in the purple and give it a honk or three, no flash.

I'll have to see about repositioning it, maybe aiming it at the front tire hugger will work... The street in front of my house is about as pale as asphault comes, so if it doesn't work there, I don't think I'd be seeing much use out of the modulators.
The glue on mine failed completely and the housing is now gone. I wrapped it in electrical tape (well, the sides) to protect it.
I was out riding with a friend and asked him what he thought of my brakelight modulators... He asked me "what modulators?" Guess he thought I was just pumping the brake a lot. ;)

I just finished installing my Signal Dynamics headlight and taillight modulators. They work great!
I've also attached a picture of my photo cell install location ( in the headlight aiming hole ) It works well and fits in very easy with no drilling or "mashing" of plastic parts.

My first mod! I just finished putting in a Signal Dymanics headlight modulator and a Back Off taillight modulator.

Here is the rear modulator.
Also, check them out in action

i have that rear modulator and found out that if you double tap your brake lights correctly you can cause an alsmot full second delay between you hitting the brakes and your brake light coming on. considering how much faster i can stop on my bike than most cars i deemed this an unacceptable risk. my solution was to add an led light bar and connect the modulator to it instead (this required wiring in a relay as well).

Hello all & greetings again from New Zealand.
Does anybody know where I can get a K3 wiring/electrical diagram from? I've added some extra headlights and am wanting to sort out the electrical side of things.
Thanks in advance for any help :)
