View Full Version : I'm a GSXR rider from England...

and I'm gonna be renting a GSXR whilst in San Diego.
I'm gonna be getting married there, but first, my fiance has a week's worth of work, so I'll be amusing myself on the gixxer for 4 days whilst she's not around.
What I need to know is, given 4 days, of all day riding, where would you head out to in SoCal?
Thanks.
EDIT: By the way I'd like to give a big thumbs up to South Bay Sport Bike Rental (http://southbaysportbikerentals.com/) who accommodated me last minute (9pm Sunday) with the black CBR600RR after I got severely let down the by SportBikeRental.com (http://www.sportbikerental.com) who the day before delivery of the gixxer was supposed to take place told me they couldn't deliver til the following day. and then decide not to reply to my mail asking if I'd get a cut rate for the chronically shitty service.

Have the bike from the AM on the Monday 30th to AM on Friday the 4th.
I'll go as far as say a 10am start and enough time to get back by 6 for my fiance will take me.
I'm bringing my HGR leather jacket and my Shoei lid... wrapped in 10 square metres of bubble wrap.
I like good twisties; massive speed isn't so much my thing as kneedown oppurtunities are. That said, some wide open roads would be welcome.

I know, I did test an SV recently with every intention of buying it, but it's winter here now, and English winters are mean, nasty, grimey things you don't want to ride in.
Decided to post here because everyone seemed to actually 'ride' instead of stunting along to gangsta rap all day.
Thanks.

I would love to take you around our awesome twisties but I work during the week. That map has some good roads on it. http://www.ducatigirl.com/california/sdmap.html Montezuma is a really fun road. Hit up Banner Grade as well. Taking a few laps on Montezuma is always a good idea. Mesa Grande is fun as well. Start buy going up Highland Valley road. These are some of the best roads with low traffic during the weekday espiecally. You can link them all up however you please. The south grade of Palomar is one of the tightest roads in San Diego County. It is low speed tight turns. The east grade of Palomar is fast with some nice turns. Palomar is good during the midweek. There is a Track Day on the 30th so a lot of us will be doing that. Hope you have fun and someone shows you around. Hit me up if you have any questions.

That's Nov 30th to Dec 4th? Well, if you have an interest in making it up to the Santa Barbara area, I could take you on a twisty ride up Highway 33 (in Ojai). ;)

No 30th October to 4th November.
Even if the dates were right, bit far to go.
Thanks anyway, mate!

if you care to make the treck, December 2nd or third, I could take you round our LA twisties. Azusa, Glendora Mountain, or the Mulholland to the rock store if you are easily star stuck. Plus, I'm sure a couple of the local brit riders could afford to hear a proper accent to remind them how much they are screwing up theirs.... But seriously, either of those days, I'd be down to show you some very twisty tarmac. To give you an idea, Glendora Mountain to Glendora ridge would be twisty enough to make a rally driver cringe. Very fun stuff that!

Man... really wish I could, but I only have the bike Oct 30th - Nov 4th, and I'm only here until the 8th.
Appreciate the offer though.
Thanks.

Hey triaxiom,
There are some fun rides as well up north but the drive to get to them makes for an unpleasant venture. LA traffic is a nightmare and I would avoid it at all costs. That map of San Diego has almost no traffic on it during the week days and you will be leaning your bike back and forth vs. spliting lanes for 130 miles before you even get to a turn up north. If I have to drive any longer than 1 hour in a straight line I tend to not ride as my bike likes to dance rather than cruise. Just my thoughts.

Should you decide to come up to LA I know a nice 90 mile ride in the Crest. If you get here about 9ish you can easily be out of here before peak traffic. I have stuff organised for Monday and Thursday but Tuesday and Wednesday will work for me.

I could do it saturday morning. Ignore the sandegans, none of them like riding anyhow. They're upset that all the really good twisties are here in LA.....

130 miles for some good twisties is no problem for someone from Blighty. I've ridden to the French and Dutch GP's. We had to ride 2-3hrs just to get the ferry much less another few hours after getting off the ferry. Great way to spend a weekend. :D

I would suggest at least one day up in the LA area - Angeles Crest or at least a tourist photo at the Rock Store in Malibu.
Too bad you won't have the bike on Saturday or Sunday - Rock Store can get packed and celebs may show up on Sundays.
You can't go wrong whatever you do - just remember that it takes absolutely no skill to get a driver's license here, so be careful!

Gonna meet up with malkey anyway, I'll have 3 days of SD on my own, so riding with someone else is kool.

I'd like to, but I only have the bike til friday AM... plus I think my fiance would be alittle pissed if I spent the weekend riding round instead of seeing her.
Thanks though!

Yeh, no worries, well aware of the quality of american driving; my fiance's driving is an excellent example.

The limey had 18 hours worth of flying to do, plus I haven't seen my fiance in... a long time, so I've been kinda 'busy'.
;)
Out of curiosity, does anyone know where's a good place to buy bike gear in San Diego?
Need gloves.
Thanks.
