Please see this (http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist11/images/SR78ad.pdf) release from CalTrans for details.

Please read for yourselves and check out the map, but as I interpret it, there will be lots of RVs and trucks towing toyhaulers on Montzuma during the weekends for at least eight weeks beginning Jan. 3, 2007. And on weekdays, hay trucks, delivery trucks, etc., will be traversing the detour. It may be best to steer clear of the area during the term of the construction project.

That sucks, Wintertime is a great time for a desert floor run.

I was just up there to and noticed all the changes they are doing to the 76, like adding the median, on a freeway, good idea.

Update on SR78 Closure

San Diego Off-Road Coalition Update

· HIGHWAY 78 CLOSURE RESCINDED! State Route 78 through Scissors Crossing to Imperial County, which was to be completely closed, both directions, full time 24/7, commencing January 3 for about two months, will remain open to motorists without restrictions on weekends (Fridays at 4 p.m. through Mondays at 6 a.m.) as work continues on safety upgrades to the San Felipe Creek Bridge. On weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. one-way traffic control will allow motorists to pass through the construction zone, although delays of up to a half hour should be expected.

Much of the credit for this compromise goes to Sherri Kukla, editor of the San Diego Off Road Magazine, for spreading the word of the closure through her extensive e-mail list. And, of course, to the many off-roaders who wrote or called CalTrans.
