View Full Version : What Do You Want in Our New How To Forum?

We (meaning all of us, as a community) are going to create a "How To" forum after Ika (http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23152) proposed this idea earlier this week. It'll be a forum of 1 post threads giving step-by-step instructions for basic maintenance and mods done to our bikes. We'll also include as many pictures as we can.

The exact logistics of how anyone will be able to contribute is still in the works, but we'll explain it once it's figured out.

So, what do we want to see in this How To forum? There is no limit as to how many threads we can put in there, but I'm sure there are somethings we'd all benefit from having in there.

Vote on what you see in the poll (you can choose more than 1 item at a time). If there's something else not on the poll, post up here.

I can't.:(

How 'bout brake bleeding, radiator fluid changes, spark plugs and chain/sprocket changes.

What other simple periodic changes are normally done?

Hell... I don't even know how to change my own oil.

Damn it. I must have goofed that up.

Well anyway, I plan to take some pictures of stuff tomorrow and can start building this new forum next week.

Thanks for the added suggestions.

how to

swap front end
change shock
cam swap
shift star install
f3 (+other) wheel swap

stuff that gets asked all the time.

i'm planning on writing up something somewhat extensive for all the stuff i listed (along w/ pics) but it'd mostly be on the G1's w/ footnotes for pertinent G2 info.

I'd like to know how to check valve clearance. Also, my friend did some maintenance once, where he used a device with 2 tubes filled with mercury to check something - what the hell was that about?

checking clearances can be covered in the cam swap. it's pretty straight forward. adjusting is another step entirely (can also be covered in cam swap how-to)

throttle body/carb sync

Brake pads.

How to flag down help on the road. (Don't laugh - today, I passed a rider and passenger stopped on the side of the road - they looked like they were just hanging out, enjoying the scenery. As I passed, I noticed that the rear tire looked flat or squared. I turned around and asked if they needed help - the rider said yes, they had a flat, needed air, but no one stopped. I told him to wave his arms to signal passers by that he needed help. Let him use my mini bike pump to get some pressure in the tire and they and their VFR went on their merry way.)

Fork oil change on stock and gsxr forks.

One of the few things I've never done myself.

Why would you want to change the fork oil on your gsxr forks?

Unless you're racing, leave your gixxer forks alone. USD forks are a lot tougher to deal with.

My vote is for springs and emulator swap. I mean you have to change the fork oil when you do it so it kinda kills 2 birds with one stone :D

Ha, when I had my chain incident on PCH, I had lost my damn cell phone the night before. Meaning, I was broken down with no cell. I stood in the damn turn lane in the middle of the road with my hand to my head in the phone shape. Not one person stopped. Everyone just looked at me as they drove by. Someone must have called 911 though 'cause about 15 minutes later, a life gaurd came and pulled over for me. I still can't believe that not one person stopped though. Traffic was light and it was a nice big straightway. Oh well.

I voted for fork oil change. I've already changed my tires, don't know what a TRE mod is, could careless about my fender, installing a pipe can't be that hard, but my bike already came with one, so I don't care, and installing a new shock would be my 2nd vote.

it should be done at least on an annual basis IMO. i could write a little something about it. a "quick n' dirty" and a "proper" way to do it.

easier w/ RSU 600 forks too ;) no need for a spring compressor.

Oh right. Good point. I was thinking Ika was asking about changing GSXR fork oil for the same reason we change SV fork oil - because it's too light.

I'd be most interested a GSXR fork conversion and the full exhaust system/pcIII mod. Ooh, also checking the valve clearance, spark plugs and brake pad changes. Ok thats all :)

I would like a detailed step by step (with pictures) of how to make my bike into one of those Twin Factory Race Bikes. They look cool and I think it might cover most the swapping of parts aforementioned. Yeah that's what I want.:D

Step-by-step chain and sprocket replacement would be cool too. There's a thread on it, but it could use some condensing.

Well I voted for the fork oil change originally. I finally found out what a TRE mod is though, so I wouldn't mind changing my vote. And I could volunteer my bike for demonstration purposes.

How about how to swap out a tire yourself, so the dealership doesn't mess it up (http://www.socalsvriders.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24409)
