This is our How To forum, where you will find what we hope to be clear cut, step-by-step instructions to SV bike maintenance and modifications. The purpose of this forum is not for discussion of maintenance or modification, but simply to present easily read and found instructions in an organized manor.

These How To’s are written by site members, almost none of which are not certified mechanics, so take that into account. ;) We’re not responsible if you F up your bike while you’re trying to install new blinkers or whatever. But if you see a How To that interests you, read it over. It should be able to help you out with the work you want to do with your bike. Also, if it looks like a step has been missed, or something could be worded better, post it in that How To’s thread. A moderator will come along and add your comment/step to the original How To instructions and credit you with it (and then delete your post).

Example- Shock Install:
Step 25. Don’t fack with the settings. Just put on bike and ride. - TWF

If you would like to write a How To of your own, feel free. You start a How To as you would a thread in any other forum on the site. Just do your best to make it as clear, simple, and organized as possible.

Enjoy, and happy wrenching.

..and if you want to thank somebody for their writeup..just send them a PM.

It would be nice if we can keep these threads as clean as possible... get right to the useful info.

Thanks for getting on this Kurt!

It's okay to post in this thread. :p

Thanks guys. I've figured out what I needed to turn on to allow pictures to show up and have added a few more How To's.

If anyone wants to post something, feel free. Jiggy is working on a How To Remove a GSX-R Front Wheel (something I don't know how to do).

Excellent idea....I'm learning basically everything about motorcycles and my SV from people on this site and this will make it that much easier. Thanks in advance for all the How Tos that I'm sure I'll utilize regularly! :groove:

i thought this was going to be:

"How to forum:

1. Search before posting
2. There's no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people
3. Kurt'sSv is god and he will explain this to you on an hourly basis, thank you."

This will be much more helpful though! haha

Seriously, I think you've hit on something here (and what I thought it might include also ...). E.g.

How To: Use this Forum

or (put another way)

How To: Avoid Kurt Explaining To You Hourly That He's God.

I've seen more than one forum with a "newbie" button ...

I have to disagree with the first part of point 2. however :D

Anything for you joose ! ;) I did recognize that he's volunteered to help with "Gathering VI".

I still think that a "How To: Use This Forum" thread and/or a "Newbie" button would be constructive.

In other words, something other than just the processes to service/mod one's SV.

bah.. ppl just come here for three things
#1 download the service manual for free
#2 try to figure out how to do something without going through the bother of using the handy dandy search feature
#3 look at the biker babes section

If they make that a "How to". Then it should start with a "How to NOT get crabs"

On the shifting side, there is a lock nut at each end of the shift rod. You loosen both lock nuts (the front one is normal, and the rear one has reverse threads), then you turn the rod in either direction until you get the pedal height that you want.

For the rear brake, there's a threaded push rod that goes into the master cylinder. You loosen the locknut on the bottom of that rod (the one sitting on the clevis), then you turn the nut on the top in either direction to get the pedal height that you want.

Kurt, Maybe on the various How To threads that will result in left over DIY wrenching items/waste you could tag a link at the end of them to the Hazardous Waste Disposal Thread I started.

Like the one in my signature area below... ;)

Outwest - angle on the levers ??? - I assume you're speaking of the span of reach to the lever?
here's a couple of clutch lever suggestions
one is an oldie but goodie from SVrider- use Kawasaki P/N 46076-1165 - about $50 on Ron Ayers - it has a switch for the interlock - you have to figure out how to connect it - but it can be done and very "stock appearing" - the lever adjusts just like the brake lever.

Can't pull in the clutch lever? - you can try a dirt bike lever made by Malcom Smith Racing - it has 3 adjustable connection points - with the third being the easiest ( they claim 325% less effort!)
P/N 34-1963 - they come in different styles ( regular and shorty and with different color silicon grip inserts ( malcomsmith.com)...NOTE if you go the Dirt bike route - you have to disable the clutch interlock switch ( short it closed- ( connect the wires)...I think) but be careful the bike will start in gear with the clutch engaged!

if the angle of the perches are too high you can just loosen them and rotate them down to make it more comfortable - it's the first thing many of us old timers do when we get a new bike- hope this helps - good luck!

thanks for the insight curley, ... Tom nailed it...
i was trying to change the stock angle of the rear brake and shifter so that my ankles werent at an uncomfortable angle.
i found that the natural position of my ankles ( cause im tall) were makin me lock up the rear when i needed to use the rear " in an emergency"....
i knew foot levers could be adjusted, but wasnt too sure how to go about it. that, and the bikes still new, so i wasnt gonna go and hack it up w/o some support from those that have waaay more experience with wrenchin than i do:D

Mother - this is pretty clearly described in the factory service manual - which you can download from this very site.
