This is a foreign film, Mexican to be specific. It's subtitled, but it looks like many of you won't need to read the subtitles.
It's set in Spain in 1944 while the fascist are trying to take control of the country as WWII nears it's end.
This is a very intense movie.
It's about doing what you think is right, not doing simply what you are told.
I really liked this film.

I agree. Great movie, very well thought out, good film overall. It's not the best movie I've seen this year ( I reserve that honor for The Prestige), but I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Just don't sit behind someone with a fat head if you don't speak Spanish. You won't be able to see the subtitles :)
I saw this movie last weekend. Best implementation of a satyr ever, better than 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'. The satyr/faun was played by the same guy who played the aquarium-dwelling merman in Hellboy, and he doesn't even speak Spanish, he learned it for this role. He will also play the Silver Surfer in the new 2007 Fantastic Four movie.
One correction for Kurt, the movie is Spanish, not Mexican. It was filmed in Madrid and Argentina. It's billed as a "fairy tale" but it's not for young kids, there is a lot of sci-fi horrific imagery and Fascist soldiers always do evil things, too.
With the Oscar attention it garnered, it has re-released in wider... release. I saw it at my local AMC, so you have more choices than the one-off Laemmle or Arclight theatres.

I saw this a few weeks ago and am with all of you, a very good film. Lots of interesting things going on in the movie, not just the fantasy stuff. Very well made indeed.

One correction for you, the movie is considered a Mexican made film, too, because Guillermo del Toro was the one who made it. Location of filming doesn't determine the "nationality" of a film. If so, Star Wars would be considered an English film.
imdb lists it as a "Mexico/Spain/USA" film. Actually, I think "international" would be a better designation for it.
Okay, enough splitting hairs for one morning . . .
I stand corrected, Guillermo del Toro was born in 64 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Man you guys are making me want tacos.

...it's interesting........to see this influx of fairytales in movie form.......to teach adults basic morality that kids have learned back in the first grade or pre-school.....
....interesting and a sad statement at the same time.......
.....I'll def check it out.........when it comes out on DVD.....

I like this movie as much as I like tacos!
Hmmm... maybe I like the movie slightly more.
There were definitely some violent scenes (ie. the soldiers shooting at the dying guerillas) that had my stomach turning.
The visual effects were stunning and the story was really good. Hell, I do like this movie better than tacos. :D

I just remembered something - at the very end of the movie in that final climatic confrontation, DIDNT THE DIALOGUE SWITCH TO ENGLISH?!?

Not alot to say about this movie other than it is a monumental movie, wish Hollywood could still create movies this powerful and ambitious.
10/10.

Saw it when it came out. Thought it was the best movie I had seen in a really long time. Don't think I've seen a movie I like better since.

yes that is a pretty cool movie, his hellboy 2 has a lot of similar looking creatures.
I actually disagree with you guys... The movie while good left me wanting more. I spent the whole time waiting to see this magical place but felt dissapointed when I never got to see it. ;
