2006 turned out to be the year I spent the most time watching tv and movies. Just thought I'd share a few of the good ones with you. Not all are from 2006, some, I just happened to see last year. You can look em all up on imdb.com.In no particular order;

1. City of God- Import from South America about the a young boy growing up in the gang infested streets of Rio.

2. The Prestige- Amazing movie about two rival magicians. Great cast. Director Christopher Nolan delivers another flawless movie. My fave movie of the year.

3. Pan's Labyrinth- Not the "alice in wonderland" flick I was expecting. Much better. Dark, adult themed fairy tale (in a non porn kind of way).

4. Ong Bak- Thai movie with a lot of amazing action and bone crunching fights. The whole time my friends and I were yelling out " OHHHH!!".

5.Thank You for Smoking- Hilarious look at the world of cigarette marketing.

6.Running Scared- No, not the Billy Crystal\Gregory Hines flick from the 80s. This one is a gangster search for a missing pistol. It's a good flick, despite the fact that Paul Walker is in the lead role.

7.Pirates of the Caribbean: dead man's chest- No brainer. Another fun and nicely paced movie from this series.

8.V for Vendetta- Not really an action flick. If you're expecting the Matrix, this has more of it's social commentary and less of it's action, but still a good flick.

9. A Scanner Darkly- Very weird, visually and storywise. Another personality twist ( aka, mind F!ck) based on yet another Philip Dick story.

10. Invincible- I'm not a Philly Eagles fan, and the feel good Disney movie I prefer is actually Miracle, but Mark Walhberg turns in another entertaining perfomance.

11. Ravenous- Bizzare but entertaining story of a man rescued by soldiers from a remote US Cavalry outpost, who has a strange secret as to how he survived in the wilderness.

12. 300- yes, I know it's not coming out until March, but I was working on the game, so we got to see an advance screening. It didn't have all the effects finished up, but it was still entertaining. Think Dawn of the Dead remake meets Troy, meets Sin City, take out all the substance, and replace it with blood and action. There you have it :)

Well, there are a lot more that I'm sure to remember later. You guys probably have some suggestions as well.

4. Ong Bak- Thai movie with a lot of amazing action and bone crunching fights. The whole time my friends and I were yelling out " OHHHH!!".

The only way I could figure they did the stunts the way they did was to lie to the stuntman about what was going to happen.

"This is the part where the thug gets on a motorcycle and... um... get's away! Yeah, that's right... you get away... safely."

Every hit in that movie is like a Sam Kineson punch-line. "AAAAAUUUUUUUHHHH!!!!! IT'S A FUCKING KNEE TO THE FACE!!!! AAAAAUUUUUUUHHHH!!!!!"

6.Running Scared- No, not the Billy Crystal\Gregory Hines flick from the 80s. This one is a gangster search for a missing pistol. It's a good flick, despite the fact that Paul Walker is in the lead role.

I highly recommend this movie. As the credits would have you believe, its a retelling of Alice in Wonderland... if Alice were a gunrunner for the mob... and the caterpillar were a pimp... and the Queen of Hearts was a Russian mob king. Well paced, some cool time based cinema effects to help illustrate people's realizations of whats happened/going to happen.

7.Pirates of the Caribbean: dead man's chest- No brainer. Another fun and nicely paced movie from this series.

I laugh at the watermill scene. Laugh and laugh. Ahhh... good times.

8.V for Vendetta- Not really an action flick. If you're expecting the Matrix, this has more of it's social commentary and less of it's action, but still a good flick.

Even though the Wachowskis turned this book about anarchy into a movie about radical freedom fighters, the mood and prose of the movie is reminiscent of the writing and directing of the first Matrix... the one that didn't suck.

11. Ravenous- Bizzare but entertaining story of a man rescued by soldiers from a remote US Cavalry outpost, who has a strange secret as to how he survived in the wilderness.

I remember this film. It just made "The Bottom Shelf" on Joblo.com.

12. 300- yes, I know it's not coming out until March, but I was working on the game, so we got to see an advance screening. It didn't have all the effects finished up, but it was still entertaining. Think Dawn of the Dead remake meets Troy, meets Sin City, take out all the substance, and replace it with blood and action. There you have it :)

Lucky bastich. The comment about taking out the substance makes me wince. I usually find substance to be a good thing in a film.

I think the title says it all, Though I missed 1 and 2 I felt a little out of the know in some scenes.......

I know what you mean. I had that same problem with Weapons of Ass Destruction #3. Fortunately, there were some great performances, which made it easier to follow along....

Just happened to watch this one the night before last. Some of the cinematography in it was pretty neat. Definitely worth watching.

If anyone else out there is a Paul Walker fan (I admit it), watch "Into the Blue" also. The underwater scenes were amazing. Made me want to go scuba diving again.

For any of you who like surfing, I highly recommend "Billabong Odyssey". The movie was made a few years ago, but I watched this documentary last year. Cool footage.

"Crank" is another one to watch. Fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Well, I don't want you guys to get too pumped on 300. What you see in the trailers is pretty much the whole movie (which is why there are 5 trailers but they all show the same thing). That being said, it's still entertaining, in a Starship Troopers or Independence Day kind of way, but darker and bloodier.
Oh, btw, forgot that I saw Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle last year. That was pretty funny :)

Not really my type of humor, and the previews didn't appeal to me in any way. Besides, I got over the whole Mahir thing back in college

i agree on the following points:

the prestige - great movie. even though i guess several of the plot points (like how christian bale did his trick and how hugh jackman was doing his at the end). that wasnt the movies fault, i just have an unnatural talent for guessing how movies end, part way through. it sometimes ruins movies for me. and my wife for that matter. elbows to the ribs are not unheard of in my house. :D

anyways, moving on...

ong bak - this movie was awesome. so much so, that is became a noun and a verb around my shop. catching an elbow to the face became known as an "ong bak". im sure you can guess what "ong bak-ing" was. much fun was had with this, until one day an elbow contacted a nose within sight of a captain. game over :(

v for vendetta - good movie, but i kept getting the felling that they were trying too hard. like a food court gangster "free-stylin" to an eminem beat.

city of god - good movie, i felt for the characters. see it if you have a chance.

my additions:

batman begins - best batman movie ever (minus the bullshit batmobile. but that can be forgive due to the aforementioned kick-ass-idness). my favorite line in the whole movie: "SWEAR TO ME....!!"

full metal alchemist: the conqueror of shambala - its an anime. a movie made after the series ended. i liked it because it took a story line that i enjoyed and made it cross over into the real world. it almost had a "what if" feel with the alchemy versus science part of the story. (if you saw it, you would know what i mean). it also sort of "re-ended" the series in a way that wasnt so open ended and depressing, but didnt make it all "happy-feely the world is a wonderful place". overall i would call it a good movie from a great series.

you can watch the movie by itself (it give a bit of backstory), but i recommend watching he series, it is one of the greats.

I don't often get to the theater, because they keep letting the general public in, and I hate the public - why go to the movies if you need to make such a critical phone call during the film? But anyway ...

1) Grudge 2 - I loved the sequel to the Japanese horror flick, and it got us renting films of this genre from our local video store. Twisted tales of morality, nothing in the way of happy endings, very un-Hollywood ... I also think I saw Ringu, the subtitled version, and the second one as well. Excellent.

2) Talledega Nights - I achieved a lower form of consciousness while watching this flick - and laughed my ass off. Probably all the Mountain Dew ...

3) Sin City - finally got around to renting it. Loved it.

ROFL, that's the funniest thing I've heard since someone on WoW said " It hurts........like a fat kid in an ice cream store".

Anyway, sounds like someone needs to ease off the adult material.

That stupid fuckin movie was so god damn dumb I left half way through and got my money back.

WTF is so funny about an idiot with a fake accent pretending to be somebody that he isn't??

His comedy is funny for maybe 30 seconds at a time, but an hour and a half movie?? Gimme a break, geez I was ready to shoot myself.

I agree with Jeff... Nathalie and I watched it for about 15 mins and deleted the image from my hard drive what a freakin waste of space!!!! I'm glad I didn't have to go through wasting time and effort to see Borat on the big screen !!!

I love movies, rarely see one I truly don't like. In fact, my girlfriend likes to give me shit about this, telling me that I've never seen a movie I didn't like (my retort was, Grease...I've always hated that movie....she wasn't appreciative of that though). Anyway, I definitely wouldn't consider myself to be a film expert, merely a fan. That said, there were a LOT of movies that I really enjoyed this last year (in no particular order, some seen in a theater, others in the comfort of my own home):

Borat (actualy, I do find it funny watching a guy using a fake accent, playing an idiot...every see Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies??)

United 93
What the #$*! Do We Know
Hustle and Flow
World's Fastest Indian
V For Vendetta
Syrianna
Casino Royale
Pans Labyrinth
Talledega Nights
Good Night and Good Luck.
X Men III

I'm sure there are PLENTY of others I'm overlooking...these were the ones off the top of my mind that were memorable.

I got World's Fastest Indian in my Netflix queue right now :)

Just saw "Snakes on a Plane" last night. Perhaps the best motherfucking movie of all motherfucking time.

And yeah, watch Bubba Ho-Tep. Excellent. Casting Ossie Davis as President Kennedy was a strike of genius ...

Oh yeah, forgot about Snakes on a Plane. I liked it, and it was a lot better than I expected, but not sure it's one that I would recommened. However, for DVD, it's worth a look.
One of the movies I forgot about was Lords of Dogtown. I really enjoyed seeing some old school skate action. Kind of before my time in the surfing\skate world, but I do remember having posters of some of those guys. It took me back to a time when I would spend 8 hours a day at the beach, Chris Carter was the editor of surfing magazine and hadn't yet created the X-Files, and when the hottest California girl on the beach and in the magazines wasn't blonde and blue eyed, but rather, a smoking brunnette named Erin Rose. Ah, those were the days......

Ok, just remembered two other movies that I really enjoyed, but I have to admit they were a bit "quirky", for lack of a better term;
Garden State, which was a total surprise, but really enjoyable. It made me really hate the Star Wars prequels even more, however, because once again we see that Natalie Portman can act.
The other movie is The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I don't know why, but those movies appeal to me. I get that they aren't for everyone, but I guess it's my type of humor. Moreso than Borat and Will Ferrell. Bill Murray rules!!

RoninApache

alright, the oscars got me thinking to two other good movies I saw in 06;

Once Were Warriors, a flick from New Zealand about a group of Maori living in a government housing project, starring Temeura Morrison of Jango Fett\Star Wars fame. Sad movie, but a good one, and Temeura Morrison is rocked up!!

Other flick I just remembered was called Buffalo Soldiers. Nope, it's not about black cavalry and Indians, but rather about US Army troops involved in the black market in West Germany at the fall of The Wall.
Check em out if you get the chance
