We got to the track Saturday and did some practice as usual but this time I wanted to work on T2 because I suck through there. I was on an old Pirelli rear I had from last year and the same front I crashed on last May and raced on last month so I wasn’t going to push it real hard, plus I don’t practice very hard to begin with. The wind kicked up good and I don’t mind it too much because at Willow you’ve got to be comfortable in the wind. (Right Kurt) I wanted to mess with the front spench but Dave Moss wasn’t around so that didn’t happen and I just finished the day cruising around seeing if I could get the rear to slide.
Sunday we got to the track around 7am and it was freaking freezing! I skipped the first practice in exchange for the track to warm a little and so my tire warmers could do their thing. I was going to be racing on some old tires and didn’t want to add anymore risk to my day. The wind had totally change direction and was now coming from the North East. I threw on last months rear and flipped the front and just cruised through practice to save what my tires had left.
The first race was 550SBK and I was gridded right behind Kurt so I figured I’d just follow him through T1 and then see what I could do. Well that all went to crap cause I SUCK at starts and Kurt left me in the dust. JC was just to my left on his fizzer and he got out in front of me too and I think Monsterdood was on his left.
Once we got going I started pulling on JC and the only way through was around the outside with the Buffalo Girls. There was about 3feet of track on his right so I just squeezed through and came across their fronts and leaned into T1. I started tightening up my line and I could see Kurt and Andy touch then JC comes around on my right. On the exit I got a good headshake that has never happened before (Wind?). We drag raced in to T2 and JC takes the line on the inside. I follow JC through T2 with a Sh!t load of sparks coming from something on his bike, it spooked the crap outta me! Then the wind in T2 was wreaking havoc on everyone’s lines so I was able to stick with them.
As we go through 3, 4 and 5 I have no idea what happened next I think I was the last one in the group of 4. In the next couple of laps Kurt, JC, Cory and I swapped positions a few times and some how I came out in front. Then Cory passes me on the front straight, I followed him around until T8 when I see a wheel come up on the inside of me and that lit a fire under my a$$. With the wind direction I was able to keep the throttle pinned all the way through T8 and this time I went deep into T9 and got Cory on the exit. From then on I took some defensive lines and finished the race like that. I ended up 3rd because Andy had an issue and DNF’ed.
Next was Formula Twins Lightweight.
I got a decent start for me and was following Chris Rogers and Andy around T2, they pulled away pretty quick but after a couple laps I started gaining on Chris. I passed him on the back straight and I guess he dropped out because I never saw him again. I ended up 2nd in that one and rode mostly by myself.
Not to bad I got a 3rd and a 2nd on old tires and made some progress leaning the bike to the right. I really liked the wind direction through T8 this month and if it keeps it up maybe Kurt will learn to like it too and it saved my slow ass in T2.
