View Full Version : Plugged tire make it through tech?

Will a tire with a plug in it make it through tech at buttonwillow? I am doing my first track day and need to know. I plugged my rear tire from the outside. I don't really want to buy a new tire for a track day.

I understand "know the danger of a plug" but i have had a plug in my front and rear tires and have not had any problems at speed.

:squid:

Track is very different from the street. Chances of the plug coming out are much better.

You like crashing @ 100+ mph?

And no, IF they see it, it won't pass tech. Only if they actually notice it though.

although i understand what gregg is trying to tell you, i've ridden many a trackday with a plugged tire. that being said, i don't ride NEARLY as aggressively as gregg ;)

Please do not ride or race on the track with a plugged tire. all we need is a thread on someone who crashed and was criticdally inujured due to a tire failure.

Forces go up an order of magnitude at speed on the track compared to the street and the likelihood of a failure goes up exponentially.

I like your attitude.

Iwould say a mushroom plug from the inside in the center of the tire might make it...but I would suggest replacing with an unplugged tire...safety first ...how much is your life worth? $120 worth of tire?

i'll probably get a tire, i don't wanna drive all the way up there and not be able to ride.

my point was that I wouldn't be all that angry if i crashed, assuming i was fine. It's just a bike.

First time on the track and already cutting corners???

I can only imagine what will you become with a few track days under your belt...

I am with Robert on this one... But look at it this way... Say you do not get hurt too bad.... (Bones heal anyway)... Imaging hunting for parts on ebay to get your bike to at least be rideable again.

I drop my SV when goofing around at Tortilla Flats AZ... Coming out of a turn... There was a nice and long strait away... Well instead of Running it hot like a devil.... I decided to make a wheelie.... Up she goes on second Gear.... Soon after I shifted to third gear the bike went over the balance point and I panic and did not hit the rear brake like you are supposed to do in these situation.... Anyways, here is the damage....

I am all for riding on a plugged tire. I put 10k miles on a plugged tire on the street. Just wont ride a plugged tire on the track.

My own safety aside, the safety of those around you on the track greatly depends on everyone maintaining a safe machine that will not fail them at an inopportune time.

I sure would hate to be the asshole that put someone else into the dirt because my cheap tire plug came loose.

But that's just me. I don't really know anything at all. Smokescreen can attest to that.

Ah, not sure what wheelies have to do with this thread, but yeah, probably should take it safe and spring for that new tire. Kind of a bummer if the tire isn't very old, but at least you won't have to worry about having chicken strips at the trackday!! :D

Too bad you weren't around here, I would give you one of my take offs. I get holes often in my tires and a plug is used just to get them home. I then change out the tire with a new one. I have had a tire go flat at 85mph and it is a sobering experience. I had one go out right before a decreasing radius turn as well. Both were scary moments that could not be avoided. This can be avoided by just getting a non damaged tire. Track pulls hard on the surface of your tire, might just rip that plug right on out. The tire vendor might be able to hook you up at the track as well. Good luck and have fun.

That was a fun day Luis until you went sky wards one too many time :-) Glad you got your bike running again.

I would not even ride on the streets with a plugged tire but then again i ride like a :squid:

I had a tire go flat on me doing about 100 on a freeway exchange, I had to get new boxers when I got home

Buy a new tire for the track day. Keep the plugged tire and put it back on your bike in a few months when this new tire wears out, since you don't mind ridding on the street with a plugged tire.

Burst- I'd say this is what, the second and third time I've ever agreed with you!! You might.... be getting smarter!!

Jrod- my dad always said, oils cheaper than parts.... There are parts on the bike that should be replaced from time to time, so that other, much more expensive parts, don't get broken. I've ridden on a plugged tyre, and I've ridden on a plugged tyre gone flat at 80MPH....... You planning on going fast while you are a the track?

The point is not just the possible injury but the cost of repairs when you wreck.

I think that riding a track day on a new tire does not mean that you will not wreck.

But I think that riding a track day with a plug tire would increase the posibility of it going flat when least expected and likely wrecking the bike.

I do not think anyone would go to a track day and cruise around on the track... We all know that at a track day we are going push the bike ( .... and those tires too) ...to our limits (Not the bike limits).

Ususally the tyre goes flat (doesn't blow out) slow enough that you don't notice. Just feels a little loose. Then you get hot in that corner you are growing to love and the tyre doesn't track... Best case scenario, you wash out, go in the dirt, and ruin only one side of your bike.

But it gets worse.... You are playin with your buddy, whos passing you on the outside. You wash out, he runs into you, you really get close with he and his (or her!!) bike........ You both come out alive(???) But broken.... Ruined bikes, broken bodies...

But think, before the trackday, you saved yourself $130 (installed) on a new tyre!!!

Now that's not saying you couldn't save you beater tyre for after the trackday...
