Saw Setter32 better known as Rod at Calif Speedway this morning, the weather was awesome and Level 2 wasnt a crash fest. Took both the SV1000S and the new Daytona 675 and was consistently faster on my trusty 1000 by quite a margin in the morning but the gap was closing in the afternoon......I see Sportrider doing a comparison shootout of these 2 bikes very soon.
I found the Sv very well planted but I did feel the wallowing in the corners a little bit which some of the mags complained about.A gent on Ninja said the 1000 just launched out of corners and had to get me on the brakes:confused:
The Triumph is a work in progress and I felt better later in the day I saw 152mph at the end of the front straight and it doesnt pull like the 1000. I really liked having both bikes back to back as you can feel the extra weight of the 1000 but its tried and true handling mustered thru.
It was a great day:D
Thats interesting. I havent been able to ride mine back to back because the SV is still in the shop.
Just curious what suspension mods have you made on the SV? Even though it's a heavier bike did it's seem just as quick in the tight stuff?

It felt planted the 675 is just different and the front end felt light and twitchy in some of the turns and especially the back straight, but the low end torque of the 1000 I think made the real difference. Really havent done any suspension mods to the SV its just been set up right as has the 675. I like them both

I was there on Jan. 6, but I was in the race group, getting roasted on the banking. Were you there?
I like a few of the corners there, but it's a LOT tighter than I'm used to. There's all this "braking" and "downshifting" and other non-Big Willow things you have to do.
But diving off the banking through that chicane - that's a big, butt-puckering rush. Very cool. The double-horseshoe left is pretty cool, and those last two corners coming out onto the banking are fun ...
Peace

I can see your point about race group on a 650, I was watching WERA West running race in all one session and it was crazy watching some of those closing speeds down the front straight had me turning away! Its a fun track but I get the same feeling when you do when I went to Big Willow this summer because of the speeds you carry into those corners.

.....nice meeting you..Steve..............I'm trying real hard to remember real names......instead of board names.........so I'm hoping I rememberred right....
....nice seeing Roger again.....
.....the pit area at Fontana is tres groovy............what can't the other tracks get their shit together and have a reasonably nice pit area.....
....yeah.......I'm talking to you........Willow......:raise:
....
....great intermediate group...........couldn't ask for better...... ....
...
.....as to what Steve said..........I think...
1)....he's more comfy with the SV1000....than the 675....
2)....Fontana.........is way...and I emphasize "way".... bias towards bigger displacement bikes.....
.....it's practically a drag strip.....;)
....I noticed that the bigger bikes...........keep getting away from me on the straights..............but on the curves.....they're at my pace...and sometimes even held me up a little....
...the only way I can make up grounds..........was deep and late braking.......
....and this track forced me to practice that..........all day long.....
....it was really fun.....
....until my brakes faded...........at the 2:20 session and called it a day........
....I got stock rubber brake lines..... ..........I need to remedy that....
.....it was funny............cuz it happened at the sharp right hander at the exit.....
.....on the 4th or 5th lap of the session.........I was right behind Steve..........I was playing following the leader with him............I pulled the brake lever.............she wasn't slowing down as fast as she's suppose to..........and I'm squeezing so hard that I'm pinching my other fingers......
....I was still too fast to toss her over for that sharp right hander........she even squirmed a little bit....
....so I just went straigth........through the cones.......and followed the exit.....
......so that's her way of telling me......."we're done".....
....
....fun track...........for practicing your braking.....
....145...150mph........was a bit blahzey..:squid: ......
....the fun part...........was braking at 145 or 150.......~:}
...
...umm............and hats off to those guys with the smaller bikes.........that passed me like I'm walking.........with a limp....
....bitches.....
:D
I like Fontana and I agree that it is set up for the larger displacement bikes. I t WAS designed for Super Bikes so I see why. It's a world class, professional facility that is funded by 2 of the biggest racing events of the year in SoCal so the pits and garage area HAVE to be accommodating to that and we are the lucky benefactors of that on track days... They are also WAY more expensive than others so it balances itself out.

Boo Hoo, pony up the cash were going back to Cali on either Fri. 4/20 or SAt. 4/21
Had a great time yesterday at Fontana. Since this was my first time at this track, the cones kind of confused me a little, but after a couple of sessions they didn't bother me at all. Nice seeing Rod (setter32)and pitting with Steve (Sunil). Richard (svseki) even came by and hung out with us for a while. Can't wait to do this track again.

You SV people need to get over this "other bikes are faster than mine down the straights" thing. Jesus christ, that's all I ever hear you people bitch about when you go to track days. If a race track has a real straight, you're afraid of it. All of the top race tracks in the world have a long straight, it's part of the equation for a race track.
Just because your bike isn't as fast as someone else's in a straight line doesn't mean that track isn't suited for your bike. That's retarded. Unless you have the fastest bike at the track day, someone is going to be going faster down the straight than you. 1000's are a lot faster than 600's, so is Fontana, WSIR, Road America, Miller Motorsports Park, Daytona, etc. not a track suited for 600's, too?
I'm going to continue this rant in the SV Trackday, 4/21 thread . . .

No kidding... it's a trackday... not a race... You're not racing against 1000s so why the constant comparison? STFU and ride!
Did I miss a post or was one deleted? Because I didn't notice a post with someone bitching about other bikes being faster... I noticed Steve's comparo of what he thought about his 2 bikes and I saw Michael's post about getting railed in the straights but I wouldn't take it as a "Bitch session" or was it Setter's post...? Either way I didn't think anyone was complaining. Hmmm... My point about Fontana being better suited for larger displacement bikes was just that it has 2 VERY long straights that the larger bikes have a tendency to pull away on. That's all. I've only been on a few tracks but that's what i noticed about Fontana. It's fun to have those long straights and I aint gonna lie, I don't have the balls to go hard into the chicane at the end of the front straight. I don't race, no aspirations to do so. I'm too old. I just don't get the rant...
BTW, I do appreciate the tips on the other thread even if they were given during a rant... ;)

That's exactly what we're talking about.
How is having a straight mean that the track is better suited for bigger bikes? Like Kurt said, all tracks have straights... and bigger bore bikes will always whoop the smaller bikes on them. That has nothing to do with the track being "suited" for larger bikes.

Funny thing; having ridden slow bikes for so long, I just think that getting passed on straights is part of the experience. No big deal. Passing those same dudes on the outside of corners, however, friggin' rocks ... :D
Just talked to a dude who last year won a regional endurance championship on a Honda F2. Yeah, the decade-old critter. How cool is that? Underdogs rock ...

....what is this all about?.....
....yeah......what Burke said....
....just pointed out some physics..............that I've observed....
....say what you want..............but you can't change the law of physics....
....wasn't bitchin....
....anyway............on with your bad selves...

Yes, and what revolutionary observations of physics those were! Thank you for that. I've been doing track days since 2002 and now it's finally all so clear. :p

I knew my 650 was the reason why I am so slow. Now I gotta go collect some cans so I can buy a 1000. :o

....hey bitch.....
....obviously they are.........cuz you're arguing against them......:raise: ......
....and you and others.......were obviously annoyed by them.....:* .......which pleasures me immensely....
....
.....that observation.....wasn't for fast bitches like yourself.....who got a big "S" on their chest.....
....it was for the mortal fools that haven't been to Fontana yet..........and wanted a hint of what to expect.....from the perspective of an average peasant....
....
.....bitch.....
:D
People pass me on the straight part of the track all the time. Wait a minute, I know a guy who passed me on the back straight just to blow the turn. Well, then again I blew the same turn trying follow that litre bike.
Anyway, I am signing up for April 21st for sure. Come on Rodger sign up and get Greg to do the same.
BTW, It was nice meeting people, Al (ofcounsel) & Steve, as well as Richard.
We will meet again on April 21st.
